				   | This disease seems so have so much unknown and conflicting info surrounding it. It seems a having a fever (or lack of) is not really an absolute in determining if a person is infected. About 13% of infected people will not present with a fever. And yet this is one of the most used tests for declaring a person clear or infected. The finding that 87.1% of those infected exhibited fever — but 12.9% did not — illustrates the challenges confronting health authorities as they struggle to contain the epidemic. This is the article: Ebola research: Fever not a surefire sign of infection - LA Times

Just like any other health issue, there are so many variables and uncertainties. Scientifically, we cannot say that any health issue behaves so specifically as if we were doing math. To question the certainty of transmission and progression of ebola is not naivete, fear, or hysterics. It is the core of science. Not all experts are in agreement about all aspects of ebola. Here is an interesting article: 21 Days - The Atlantic

				   | This defiant, arrogant, woman threw a fit when she was in NJ, and for whatever reason, Cuomo and Christy caved and let her have her hissy-fit way. They put her trouble causing butt on a plane and passed her off to her home state to deal with.....like wise, the powers that be in Maine, mandated that she WILL be required to complete her 21 days of quarantine......and since her first fit was so productive, she essentially, did the same thing in Maine, and then went for her bike ride today, essentially throwing her middle finger to the State of Maine and the people in her area. This woman has no concern for anyone but herself. So now, every "hero", except for our military men and women, will throw a fit, lawyer up, and remind the rest of the citizens in this country that THE HEROS know it all, and they have no intention of following any silly rules or mandates any Health Dpartment conjures up to protect the citizens of that city/state. The people in that town she is from are terrified, whether valid or not, their fear is reality to them. She could have easily just "decompressed" herself, lounging around the house, reading, watching tv, for a lousy 21 days...but that wouldnt have given her that 15 minutes of fame she so craves now. Such unprofessional behavior....especially when these are the "heros" that we expect to go the extra mile to care for the ill, ease the fears of the populace.....not to mention the lies told when they were trusted to self monitor and then turned up infected.....not such a hero for any of the people the doctor exposed to the possibility of getting the disease. Clearly, their major concern is cpnfronting ebola in Africa. THAT is where they should be quarantined for the 21 days before they are allowed to return to the states, in light of the fact that we in this country are of no concern to these people. |

				   | I was going to post about the Maine nurse and was kind of hesitant. I understand the conditions of being in a tent, etc. was not a good idea. She then gets to go home and to self quarantine, yet that isn't enough for her. The whole thing is puzzling of what her real intentions are. Many others I am sure have had to be self quarantined and not caused the ruckus she has.

				   | I think Kaci Hickox's 15 minutes of fame defiant attitude is likely to cause her more harm than good. Her instance that she is not risking others, that they can touch her, hug her, etc. (saw that on Today Show), and that she will go out of her home as she pleases..... Well her publicity has made her highly recognizable, and with all the fear of Ebola out there, I think she is at risk of someone hurting her. Until science provides absolute proof of how and when Ebola is transmitted, I support the position of being over cautious, and I do not look at those who refuse caution as heroes.

I have never heard of a hero who complains as much as she does about everything. If I had just come from a very poor country after helping care for sick and dying patients, I am pretty sure that I would not complain about the rigors of travel. Her diplomatic and public relations skills are terrible. Sandy, like you, I worry that she is endangering herself with unlikeability and courting the media circus. I also wonder if she has read the CDC's own website about federal and state government legal authorities and police power for quarantine and isolation. I linked the pages above.

I think she's setting such a horrible example. Others are going to follow her "heroic" efforts. I'd be much more impressed, if she even though she didn't think it was necessary, quarantined herself. It just seems like we have so much to learn about this disease, why take the risk? Is that bike ride really worth it?

				   | Health Officials Take Tuberculosis Patient To Court Over Alleged Failed Self-Quarantine The Huffington Post | By Ryan Grenoble Posted: 04/10/2014 5:34 pm EDT Updated: 04/10/2014 5:59 pm EDT A health official in central Illinois has taken the unusual step of seeking a court order against a patient with tuberculosis, citing concerns the man, who has been warned against going out in public, has allegedly failed to seclude himself throughout the course of his treatment. If successful, reports the News Gazette, the patient, Christian Mbemba Ibanda, could be ordered to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet. The bracelet would alert authorities if he attempts to leave his home in Champaign, Ill. Tuberculosis is spread through the air, and while most forms are curable, it can be fatal if left untreated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms include chest pains and coughing fits which may result in coughing up blood or sputum. During the hearing on Friday, all visitors to the courthouse will be required to wear masks, reports note. "We had been telling this gentleman, 'Listen. We're not messing around,'" Champaign-Urbana Public Health District administrator Julie Pryde told the Associated Press. "This is a serious illness. You cannot be exposing other people." Pryde said she hopes a court order will keep Ibanda in quarantine until multiple sputum samples test negative. Per the Guardian, the home quarantine could last up to six weeks. In 2012, authorities in California were forced to jail Armando Rodriguez, a TB patient, after he reportedly refused to take medication to keep the illness from becoming contagious. Rodriguez told a nurse he'd been drinking alcohol and using methamphetamine and was afraid the anti-tuberculosis drugs would hurt his liver, reports noted at the time. I re-read the story of Typhoid Mary this week. I had forgotten how many years she was held in isolation. During the release from her first isolation, she went against orders and returned to work as a cook, infecting more people.
