We got lucky with our first dog.. other his neuter and yearly shots, he cost us very little until he got older. When he turned 9, he cost us well over $3000 in a year for a major surgery, and then medications to keep him alive so we could enjoy his company just a little longer. Many people told me I was insane to be paying $1500 (my parents and I split the cost), but all I could say to them is how could you not? Would you deny your CHILD a surgery they needed, their only chance at survival, because you couldn't afford to?! My dog was my child... My yorkie will be my child. I may not be rich (far from it) but I'll always be prepared.

OMg I am so sorry. I didnt mean for it to come off that way I just mean that there are breeds that take less care (guess i should have worded it like that before) and then people expect to have the harder breeds be easier. Instead they neglect the care of the yorkies, maltese ect... after they have come up with the amount of money to purchase them to begin with.

Too many people don't think about how expensive dogs can be when they are seniors. As I posted before, thirteen year old Lady's medications and diabetic supplies cost me about $5,000 a year. People also think I'm crazy. I can't tell you how many people tell me just to put her to sleep and get a puppy.

I wish more people were as responsible as you are and considered how expensive that puppy could be in ten years. I get especially nervous when young people like you get two, three and more Yorkies without realizing the huge financial commitment they are making in the future when they may also have a mortgage and children.

Yes but emergency vet procedures dont happen that often. Also a lot of vets will do a payment plan if the situation is explained and it is a vet that really cares for animals and dosent just do it for the money. We dont have a lot of money but if anything ever happen to Callie it would be taken care of no matter what!

People need to be honest with themselves about the price they are willing to spend( or can honestly afford) and if a breeders pup's are not in their price range , thank them for their time and move on to a breeder you can afford . If the breeder is willing to negotiate on a pup that is their decision , but acting like you are entitled to it is a sure fire way to turn anybody off !

Whether or not you can afford or are willing to pay the asked price for a dog has nothing to do with whether or not you deserve one. That's not what anyone is trying to say at all. Deserving a pet and paying for one are not even remotely comparable.

My grandmother's car is close to being on it's last wheel. She can't afford a new one at this point, but that doesn't mean that she doesn't deserve one. It simply means that she either can't afford one, or isn't willing to pay the money being asked for them (yet).

You lost me on that one. I was quoting the price part on how much it costs per year. I wasn't talking about deserving or not deserving.

I think that if you cannot afford to provide for your dog...be it food, vet care, etc, then owning one is not the best option for you. But I don't think that means you don't deserve one. I think that everyone deserves the unconditional love that a pet provides, but if you dont' have the means to take care of one to the point that it's not in the best interest of the animal....

I think Im coming down with the flu, and probably shouldn't be voicing about anything. Everyone kept telling me to get that darn flu shot, but Im so terrified of needles, so I pay the price

(For what it's worth, the only time I ever actually got a flu shot, that was the only time I ever actually got the flu...go figure! )
