I think that if you cannot afford to provide for your dog...be it food, vet care, etc, then owning one is not the best option for you. But I don't think that means you don't deserve one. I think that everyone deserves the unconditional love that a pet provides, but if you dont' have the means to take care of one, then that's not exactly in the best interest of the animal.
