No, deserve has nothing to do with it ....but to have a pet you do need to be able to take proper care of it in all ways ,including financially. JMO

![]() I have to stick up for vets on this one. Whether or not they do payment plans has nothing to do with how much they care for animals. If they don't offer payment plans it certainly doesn't mean that they are just in it for the money as you say. Vets have a terrible problem with people not paying bills. Vets have overhead and salaries to pay just like any other business. They can't afford to run a free clinic. A common scenario is a very sick cat or dog that the owner insists have very expensive tests and treatment they can't afford. When the crisis is over or the pet doesn't make it, they can't pay the bill. Many vets will offer a payment plan to a good client, but some require you to use Care Credit or other private financial assistance. It is very important to be aware that emergency vet clinics do not offer payment plans. You have to pay upfront or they will turn you away. Since emergencies often happen after hours or on weekends or holidays, it's important to have some back up plan to pay the bill - a credit card, savings account, etc. It's part of responsible pet ownership.

I'm sorry about your Jezebel. ![]() I was speaking more in terms of knowing people ( personally) that think they deserve to have a dog , even though they know they can't take real care of it , not unforeseen future things , but right now basic things...yet they still think they deserve it just because they want it. Unfortunately I have seen them put their desire to "have it now" above what is best for the future pet. P.S Hope you don't get the flu ![]()

| ![]() We are by no means rich and I knew going in that we could not afford more than $800 so we budgeted for Chip. I had a certain amount set and I said that we cannot spend more than that and didn't look at any dogs above my budget. If they were too much, I just said thank you and moved on. I wanted to make sure I had enough money for vet bills and such. Now with Smokey, I expected to pay an adoption fee, but we got him for free. I don't think people should try and talk down the price of a dog, because if I was a breeder I would be thinking, "do they not think they are good enough to pay x amount?" To me that would make me think that the dogs were almost disposable. Putting a limit on the price though is different though.

Unfortunately I think society as a whole is like this with a lot of things. That is why we in the economic crunch we are in. This 'gotta have it now' attitude. What happened to the days of when you want something you SAVE for it? Not just throw everything on credit card. On the flip side of that sometimes it seems basic needs and amenities (food, gas, school, taxes, etc...) are getting sooo expensive that people who were living comfortably are now forced to live on credit cards to get by. Its really sad. I do see a generation of instant gratification emerging though. I hope those attitudes change, else this country will never really get out of the recession we are in.
