| Good Luck with your appointment on Friday. Several people in my family has diabetes. I can't remember which type, but its the less serious type. My brother was diagnosed when he was 40 and he had to completely change the way he was eating an he ended up losing like 50 lbs. He doesn't really have to monitor his blood sugar daily like soem people, just watch what he eats.

| Both my father and grandfather have daibetes. My grandfather is type 2, takes pills during the day to regulate his insulin. My father is type 1, where is body doesn't produce insulin and has to give him insulin injections throughout the day to regulate his sugar. I guess growing up with it, it's not too scary. I'm sure, it being new to you, it's scary. But, if you work hard and change your lifestyle, it is manageable. If you have extra weight that you could lose, it would help you. You have to start eating more consciously. My father was brought up in a traditional Portuguese family, where they eat big, full meals and dessert is always served. He likes sweets! He was originally a type 2 diabetic but, didn't take it serious enough in the beginning and his diabetes got worst. Now he eats completely different and has it under control. It was scary in the beginning though, and when he first started using insulin. He usually writes down what he eats, so it's easier to keep track, and uses a machine, in the morning and at night, to take his blood sugar readings. He started walking after work and on the weekends and lost some weight, and it helped a lot. My hs friend is also a diabetic, too. He was your typical crazy jock, baseball player. He was outgoing and funny, the life of the parties. It was at a friend's hs graduation party, where he got really dizzy and passed out. When he got to the hospital, they took a reading and his blood sugar was in the 600s Normal is in between 80-120!! He went into a diabetic coma and was in the hospital for a few days. He's fine now. He's on a stricter diet and is just careful. My cousin was very very heavy. He was, idk, in the upper 200lb range close to 300lbs, and was giving himself a few insulin injections a day by the age of 16. He's now 25 and recently lost a ton of weight. He's a lean 160lbs now. Since he's lost the weight and on a new diet, he's off his insulin injections and only takes 2 pills a day now. I hope my stories haven't scared you more. I just wanted to give you my family's experience. It's very scary in the beginning but it's controllable. A strict diet is key. You have to get it under control in the beginning, unlike my dad did. Good luck at the doctors! I'll be thinking about you and praying for a good reading!! Let me know how you make out at the doctors! Think positive until Friday!

| My daughter was diagnosed with Diabetes at age 6, she'll be 22 this year. She's been on an insulin pump for the last 12 years and the pump really helped keep her blood sugars in good to great control. Hopefully your doctor will give you a clean bill of health but if you do have Diabetes, it can be managed, you just have to know how to count carbs and you'll have do glucose monitoring 4-6 times a day. With needle therapy (giving yourself shots) you'll have to watch your diet but with the insulin pump, you'll be able to eat whatever you want, as long as you know how many carbohydrates you ingested and you bolus per the docs instructions. With the pump you can sleep late, you can be late eating meals (or skip a meal if you're not hungry) ... the pump was a God send! Needle Therapy she would have to give 3-4 shots per day but with the pump, she has a little infusion set that she changes every 3 days - so instead of 12 shots in 3 days, it's just one. To learn more about pump therapy check out Medtronic Diabetes: Diabetes management products, education & support. Good luck with your appointment, hopefully you are just fine!

| You could have diabetes or it could be something else, I know some people who are just hypoglycemic, if they don't eat they get the same symptoms that look like diabetes....dizzy, weakness, shakes, etc. all they have to do is eat..... When both my husband and son where diagnosed with diabetes they had a lot of weight loss, blurred vision, drinking and peeing a lot..... Get to the doctor and get your tests done for your health, because if it is diabetes it needs to be treated as soon as possible....Good luck and I hope it's not as bad as your anticipating......

The pump easily detaches from the infusion set so she can take the pump off for showers or swimming. You just toss the pump into bed and than jump under the covers, the infusion set (tubing) is 24 inches long, so there's room to roll and toss and not feel like you're laying on a hard lump when you're sleeping. The benefits of the pump and the tight blood glucose control she has gotten from being on the pump, outweighed any clothing issues she may have :-)

| Good Luck at your Dr's appointment. That's a shame they changed your appointment to almost a week later. I hope it's not Diabetes that you have but if it is, the Dr's will give you all the tools/information you will need. My daughter 2 years ago at age 20 was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. The Dr. put her in the hospital to get her blood sugar under control. She is on needle therapy. Right now she says she doesn't want to get the Insulin Pump because she doesn't want something permantely attached to her body. It's a personal choice. I pray that a cure for Diabetes is in the near future.

| hubby was diagnosed with diabetes at 21... sounds like you have low blood sugar. when his sugar was high he was sooo thirsty/tired/irritable. when you feel dizzy and sweaty the best thing to do is drink OJ!! i'm also going to nursing school and a little fact about diabetes.. in most cases when you are diagnosed as a child with juvenile diabetes you have type one(insulin dependent) when you get is when you are older its usually type two (where you take the pill) ... unfortunately they told him being in his twenties he prolly had type one, and they were right. diabetes is a very serious thing you can go into diabetic comas if you're sugar is too high or low (my hubbys sugar was 800 something when he got tested!) they told him he should have been dead!!!! please either get your doctor to bump up your appointment or go somewhere else its not something to play around with

I pray that there will be a cure too, there have been a lot of advances in this area, so hopefully one day soon ... I just wanted to comment that the pumps infusion set is not "permanently" attached. The tiny flexible plastic catheter is thinner than the post on an earring and is 1/8" long, you inject it normally into your abdomen and change the site every 3 days. You put it in and you take it out, it's easy and doesn't hurt any more than any other needle injection.

| Both types of diabetes is serious, dont take it lightly, but you shouldnt panic it is managable if you desire to manage it. I am a nurse and deal with patients with the disease on a daily basis. IF you are diagnosed with diabetes take advantage of diabetic education and your Dr can set you up for a class. It will be very helpful to you. Low Carb diet with exercise will usually control type 2 diabetes. I am controlled with diet. |
