| IMHO the difference between a breeding yorkie fancier and a typical back yard breeder are distinctively different. A breeding yorkie fancier tend to select their breeding bitch and sire with care and take the proper steps, tests and vet visits prior to breeding and after to insure they have healthy happy babies and doesnt release their babies before 12 weeks, where as, the typical back yard breeder buys whats in their market place, concentrates on the market demand, doesnt consider the quality of their breeding but the quantity, only sees a vet when necessary and advertises there babies at 6 weeks.

| But surely many people who "have just one litter" do not have the health checks etc that would set them apart from BYBs I accept readily they don't make a profit as breeding usually costs more than a litter can make. red98vett: Quote:

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Jules - I agree with what you said too - but we'll never change the fact that people are going to breed their dogs....it's just a matter of HOW they breed...is it for love of the dog or money ? I just don't see private breeding ever stopping - We can only hope those that do it are careful... but we know that just isn't usually the case.... This is an excellent Word Document that shows the differences in breeding practices... Let me see if it uploads... I've had this for about a year ...I found it and really thought it was a great description of a BYB

| When I was looking for Carter, I saw that same list posted online. It really helped to define how to determine the type of breeder you run across. It is a great source of information. Thanks for posting it for others that might not have found it by doing an online search. Lisa

| Well we may not be able to stop them all but unless we question why people are doing it we don't stand a chance of stopping any of them |

Yorkies are lucky - they often are rescued before others animals but it's still adding to the population when any one who has one wants babies goes and has them......I think most hobby breeders really do love their pets...it's the BYB that are in it for profit... This is such a big subject - but I'd hate for someone here, that just had babies... or is going to have babies... to think I don't agree with what they're doing - if you are RESPONSIBLE and do it out of love - then I can understand it....I just don't agree with over breeding and selling for profit without really doing your homework and striving to improve your line.

| I guess I'm coming at it from the sharp end we are continually trying to find homes for all breeds of dogs and just recently toy dogs have become fashionable so we are seeing so many more of them in rescues I knew little about yorkies before we got one and in the past 2 years we have been shocked at how many are coming into rescue that hardly resemble yorkshire terriers any more - a beautiful vigorous hardy breed being ruined |

A status symbol USED to be T-Shoes or Cells or Pagers - now girls are going to want to run around like Miss Hilton and what happens to ALL THOSE puppies when the girls want to go shopping or out to eat....and the BIG ONE -- to go out with boys ? Yorkies are NOT Date Friendly...matter of fact ...they can be tough on a marriage if you know what I mean lol...(just thought I'd throw that in there) I really try NOT to be serious that often...but this is a serious subject.

| The yorkie and small dog craze reminds me of when the movie 101 Dalmations was first introduced about 13 or 14 years ago. Everyone and their brother had to have a dalmation. Few people were ready to be responsible for those pups. Shelters, rescues, vets all had their hands full when owners figured out they reallly didn't want to deal with those cute spotted pups any longer. No one should ever purchase a pup because it is the "in" thing to do. Lisa

The only difference in my teen is that I'm requiring her to be responsible for Cooper -- even though its summer! No sleeping late -- get up when Cooper needs to go potty. Cleaning up behind him . . . bathing him, etc. I've even denied requests to sleep out so that she can be home for her dog to sleep with her instead of me. I'm sure that isn't the norm though . . . most parents allow the teens to do whatever they want and not be responsible. I can't imagine teens/young adults at a rave with their "accessory." The pup probably wouldn't survive the night because of exposure to alcohol or being stepped on. UGHHHHHH . . . .

Alright Red, I agree with you almost completely BUT when my bitch produces puppies you bet you're butt I'm seeing $$$$. I HAVE done testing and fully vetted and had my female before an AKC judge at the show last month in GA and confirmed that she was indeed standard and "gasp" show quality. Didi I expect that? NO. Am I flabergasted? OH YES. As long as my male conforms to the standard. Someone will get some AWESOME puppies. But ALL breeders are in it for the money unless they give the pups away free. I care about my babies and have done the appropriate research and also have a wonderful mentor-BUT-all for the money (and for another female of course) Let's just be realistic here. Some of us do it responsible, in home, and take ALL the steps and back our tiny program. BUT the difference is some use their dogs like crikets, and sell their babies, then dump them when their breeding days are through. The difference is the personable love and human contact and attention we show. There are NO reputable breeders within 1 hour of me and even though I haven't produced a litter yet, my name and number has flown all over my little town. I have people from Colubia, SC calling me willing to meet my $1200 prices becasue of the hearsay about my 2 little standard yorkies. My vet recommends me, my groomer recommends me, my dentist recommends me to anyone asking about a yorkie. They know what I am doing and the standards I am following, the hours of research, and the health of my dogs. I would have never imagined word of mouth being so powerful. When you put in the work, good things will come. To the OP: Make it worth your while and do the right thing. Test, vet, research, find a mentor, when these seasoned breeders speak-be quite and take notes-they know from which they speak.
