| Why try to change what you have????? I don't want to sound rude - or for this to come across the wrong way by any means, and maybe because I am a first time Yorkie owner - these things do not matter to me - I am curious and do have questions, but as I read the posts I find a lot of Yorkie owners worried about the hair color - or the size of the dog - and not just out of curiosity - some are looking for a fix - Baxter's hair is changing colors too - the top of his head makes him look like an old man because it's silver/gray - His ears are flopped and he weighs 7 lbs. at 4 months - Reading some of the threads - I think I should be worried - But I'm not - He's Baxter - He's my puppy - at this point if he grew to be 100 lbs I would love him just the same.(Although I might be afraid of him) It might be that I've mis-read the posts, but it sort of feels like if you had a "skin" baby and it was born with brown eyes and was on the bigger size you would want some answers and a way to change it - Just love them for who/what they are - |

i was one of those people who you are talking about. when i saw a yorkie or two and was playing around with them, i knew in my heart this is what i wanted. i wanted a standard size yorkie. i searched akc and this is what i knew what a yorkie was. i got my yorkie but when she grew, she has short hair, long snout, floppy ears, 10 lbs, and she is not the yorkie that i had grown to love. (granted i did not research breeders very well and didn't know to do this until i came here) don't get me wrong. i love her to death and she will be with me always but this is not what i wanted or paid lots of $$$$$$ for. i wanted a standard yorkie. this is how i found yt (like many others) wondering why my dog doesn't look like a yorkie????? and thru yt i have learned about the poor breeding of yorkies. now i have three more yorkies that are within the standard and i love them just as much. when we see that face and love it.....and we get one that does not have all the yorkie traits, we begin to question????is this a yorkie????was there a mix????? not that we don't love our dogs but we want to know WHY??? i hope this answers your question

| I'm not offended my the ?....I see what your talking about though, I think there more of curiosity questions than complaints...since there is a lot of variances in yorkies from color, size, temperament etc. etc. it's more of a comparision to others....When I received my first yorkie I had no idea there was such a size difference in them ( 2lbs. & up) or color variations, I just wanted a yorkie, plain & simple...I got lucky & have been completely satisfied w/ him.

| You have a great attitude! I think a lot of people worry because these dogs should fit a certain standard set by the AKC and also cost a lot of money. I suppose a few worry because they want their dog to "look right," but a lot of us feel the same way you do if our dogs are a little too large, or the wrong colors. However i have learned on YT that breeding and selling all breeds is a huge responsibility. There are many great breeders, but Yorkies have become the second most popular breed in this country and, therefore, are huge money makers. There are puppy mills and breeders who breed tiny dogs with little or no regard for their health issues just to make a lot of money. They advertise "teacups," which cost more. There is no such thing as a "teacup, and some of these are not as healthy as a good breeder would be sure they were. Most people here are not being snobbish about how their dog looks, they are simply concerned with maintaining the integrity and health of the breed, and with doing away with puppy mills and greedy breeders.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | And for those of us who have teahouse Yorkies (in excess of 12 pounds) it's reassuring to hear from others with similar features and characteristics. Especially since we are regularly questioned about whether our dogs really are FULL or REAL Yorkies! My guy weighs about 14 pounds and I couldn't love him more. He's put on a few pounds since we brought him home in 1997 -- and so have I for that matter. I'd hate to think he would love me less because of it. |

| I understand what you're saying but then again....you should get what you pay for. An example would be if you bought a red car and it arrived green, would you just say "oh well?". I know a pet is not the same as a car but it is purchased and some of these yorkies cost more than my first couple of cars I believe I've even read about "lemon puppy laws" somewhere. A person who buys a yorkie to breed or show wants certain qualities in their animals and if they don't get it then they have a right to be disappointed. I know a lady who bought a male for breeding. He was such a mess(half hairless) when he got older. The lady tried to tell her that it was a rare hairless yorkie. Of course she couldn't use him as a stud. Doesn't she have every right to be sad or mad? She had three females and while she uses studs she had wanted one of her own. She was not at fault at all. If you bought a yorkie and got a Great Dane you wouldn't just say "hey, that's ok". It's very similar to why people are upset when they were promised a 4 pound dog and got 15 pound one. Yorkies cost premium for certain things as color, pedigree or size....when you pay for those premiums you have every right to be disappointed because the breeder lied to you. If you pay the big bucks for a biewer yorkie and then get a regular yorkie would you just let that pass? It's the same thing. It's all about appearance(size, coats, color). I won't even go into the dishonest breeders who sell sick pets and expect the new owner to just fall in love with a poor puppy who will have lifelong ailments, that truly breaks my heart. As shocked as people are to always hear this, it's true: dogs are not humans. No matter how much you love your pet, if you have a child and there's a fire there is NO QUESTION to which one you would save if you could only save one. So comparing skin babies to fur babies isn't the same.

To be honest, most people can love ANY dog. We all love our dogs and feel they are special but in reality, if we neve got them in the first place and got another dog, we would never know the difference. Every dog has lots of love to give and most people get dogs because they want that affection and love. That being said, I just hope everyone who gets a dog (regardless of the size and color) loves them and gives them a wonderful home!! Puppy kisses are the best!

Secondly, continuing with the human baby analogy, almost all parents DO question the appearance of their child at some point, or wonder why they developed the way they did, and there is nothing wrong with this, just as there is nothing wrong with yorkie owners concerned with their baby's development to look for answers. As long as the baby in question is loved, as it almost undoubtably is, there is no reason to question the unconditional love most yorkie owners have for their furbabies.

| my opinion is that i dont think people are asking these questions to see if there is anything to change it, its probably out of curiosity. I can only speak for myself and I will say when I was looking for my puppy I did not want a big yorkie, nor did i want one with the longer snout...why? because to me i dont find it attractive. I wanted a yorkie no more than 5 pounds, would i love him if he got bigger yes, but is that what i wanted no. I feel you should get what you pay for. I have read alot of the threads and *most* not all, of the people who have bigger yorkies (10 pounds and up) thought their puppy would remain smaller, so even they wanted a small yorkie. ofcourse they love their pet but thats not what they wanted. also when people come on here and ask questions about weight and coat (like I did) its because they are curious. I see nothing wrong with that. as far as the whole child analogy...it needs to stop because the reality of it is that we do not pick and pay for our children but we do pick and pay for our pets. To me, the love i have for my my children is very different than my dog .JMO thats what this site is for, to ask questions and meet fellow yorkie lovers :-) |

| someone above me said, "you want what you want". when i bought Ceeby, i was looking for three pounds or less. Didn't know any better. now I do. BUT, I have learned that five pounds is not much larger and they are , to me, just the right size. It's what I want. I have two of the prettiest little, short, boxy girls you ever say andd I wish i could duplicate them over and over. one weighs 4 1/2 and the other weighs 5lbs. i have had a couple of seven pounders here that i loved dearly but they just didn't have "the look' I really like. i have two six months old pups now that I think are going to be larger and stay very dark. I sure hope they lighten up with age and they can stop growing anytime now. LOL it's just that you know what you know that you like and want but after you get them, no matter what, you love them just the same. |
