| I live in the Hollywood Hills, and right outside my backyard, hawks are at eye level with us daily.... and there is NO WAY IN HELL I would ever let my baby out without me by his side with a leash in my hand. (Which is still dangerous!!!) A hawk actually flew in the bathroom of my neighbor who happened to have an all glass bathroom (he left the door open for his big dogs).... I threw a towel over the Hawk and set him free.... picking him up and getting really close to him I can assure you that those CLAWS are all MUSCLE!!!! This is No Urban Legend, Hawks can pick up Yorkies and eat them for luch!! I recenty hired a trainer to come to the home and we were in the back yard and he saw a Hawk and freaked and shared a horrible story with me that recently occured in a neighborhood across the way with a new yorkie owner. It sounds silly to think a bird can pick up 3 or 4lbs, but think of it this way... When you were in an airplane last, did you stop to think... how the hell does this thing stay up??? My point exactly!!!! |

| Laurner - my heart bleeds I see those hawks every day outside my window and after reading your story, all I want to do (and excuse me for being so frank) is vomit. I am at a loss of words for your pain. All I feel is nausea and that is really all I can say. What a horrible experience, your story will stay in my mind forever. may your baby rest in peace. |

| When I read your posts about hawks all I could think of was thank God we don't have hawks here. But recently all of my neighbors have been talking about all the hawks in the neighborhood. OMG I don't know what a hawk looks like. I am so worried now. Do you think they would go after 12 lbs yorkies? Teddy wants to be outside all day and I can't watch him all that time. Do I need to keep them on a leash too? laurner, I am so sorry about your baby. It makes me so sick to even think that happened to a little yorkie.

| Thank you ALL so very much for your kind words and hugs. Your understanding and words mean so much to me.... it's taken me a very long time to heal. Just protect your baby furballs and keep them close. Doodlebug, if you think there is even the smallest chance of hawks in the vicinity of your yard, do not leave your Yorkie unattended outside. A leash will do nothing to protect him. It only helps when you are present and you can quickly pull your little dog towards you if a hawk is spotted. But if he is leashed and on his own, there is simply no deterrent..... |

| http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...AAoJcLH&show=7 Years ago two of my sons had our Boston a couple blocks away on the school grounds playing ball with the dog when a large owl came swooping down to get the dog. My boys rain toward the owl waving their arms a yelling, but it didn't seem to care. It almost had the dog, and this was in the day time. You just never know. |

| A very good family friend of ours had 2 yorkies. We live out in the desert and there are a bunch of owls and hawks surrounding our houses. One afternoon, the boys were in the back yard going potty and an owl swooped down and attacked one of the boys. They now only have one yorkie. It was horrific to say the least. The owl did not carry him away (he was 4lbs), but it did attack him and killed him. Very very sad - I would NOT leave the pup unattended.

| Will a Hawk go after bigger Yorkies? Quote:
Yes, they will definitely go after a bigger Yorkie. My Tucker is 9-10 lbs and a hawk came very close to getting him. Swooped down out of NOWHERE with me standing just a few feet away! It happened very fast. It came so close that it pulled out part of his hair and cut his back. Not sure what made it change its mind but I got very very lucky.

| I have had some visuals of me vs. a hawk over one of my Yorkies. It is not a pretty sight. We have tons of turkey buzzards around here and when they are flying in circles over us, I snatch up my dog and say "I DON'T THINK SO!!! " and head into the house! |

| I came home one day, in town, in Atlanta, and there was a hawk on my tiny 6x8 lawn destroying a huge robin. He didn't even move when i drove up. I have told my husband time and again that Rocket could be taken but this thread will help. He just doesn't believe me. Lauren, I am so sorry. ann |

| First of all, let me say to Laurenr....I am soooo sorry that happened to your sweet little baby!!! I have been so worried about hawks around my house ... I have seen two and they are HUGE...the size of a rooster or a large hen. But now I have another problem to worry about....this morning I was cooking breakfast and looked in my backyard and there was a coyote!!! I could not believe my eyes. (I live in Charlotte, NC.) I immediately got on YT to see if others have had problems with coyotes and their Yorkies. I was surprised to see how many post there were about how dangerous coyotes can be to our babies!!! Even more to my surprise was a post with a photo attached of a hawk taking a baby coyote. So if a baby coyote can be picked up by a hawk so can our Yorkie babies. I did not want to seem unscentsitive to Laurenr....this photo that I found on YT may be too painful to see even though it is not a Yorkie. It just proves our point that we do need to be concerned about hawks. But from all the other post I have read...coyotes can be a serious threat too. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/att...8&d=1166553178

| These aren't urban legends. Birds of prey do take all kinds of small animals. I think that photo is of an eagle taking a fox though. Speaking of foxes, a girl from another group told the story of how a fox attacked her yorkie while walking on a leash with her family. Luckily her father was able to save her yorkie and the fact she was wearing a sweater kept her from serious harm. |
