Thank you all for the information on this thread...I live in an area that is frequently visited by owls, possums, racoons, coyotes, and probably hawks....I will be extra careful while taking my Izzie outdoors and thinking of making her a dog run that is completely enclosed (top/bottom) so that she can enjoy her time outdoors with having to worry....

Its hard to believe that hawks could carry them, but the other day on my route there was a dead rabbit bigger than my yorkies on the road, there was a hawk sitting on it, I about ran over it cause he didn't move to last minute, about 5 min. later I have to go back up the road and there he was again, it amazed me cause I never seen one do this before, not that close I was about 2 ft away from it and the rabbit looked bigger than him, but he just picked it up and flew away....

o.k. I have read all this & now I am terrified.....We have always had coyotes & at night Jax is only out with me to pee & back in, but this last sunday at early dusk 3 big red tailed hawks settled in our woods off my deck. On Monday at about 6:30p.m. I took Jax out & he went over to our Labs kennel - guess what!!! 2 of the hawks flew over to a tree closer to our gravel driveway......then there were a total of 6 that landed in our trees for the evening...We can;t shoot them can we??? My hubby says they are endangered, but if they are coming after Jax (who runs just like a rabbit) wouldn't that be considered self defense -and besides who would know??? Kay

I agree with everything that has been said. Also, many times, birds of prey will fly down very fast and bang into their prey and break their backs so they can't get away. So even if you think he won't fly off with a 5 or 6 lb Yorkie, he can kill them without carrying them off.

In college we saw a hawk on campus pinning a bird beneath him. He couldn't fly away with it (so I'm assuming a pup of anything over 2 lbs would be hard to fly away with) but he injured the bird and had it pinned and was just waiting for it to die so he could eat. Not a pleasant picture, but they are definitely dangerous creatures and we need to be aware.
