Well, I live in America and I don't agree with docking. I think it is completely unnecessary. People over here do it because the "almighty, sacred, standard" calls for it. I always thought God and Mother Nature set the "standards" for all creatures but I guess human beings know better. I also think breders do it not so much for show dogs but because they figure the only way their dogs will be certified is if they follow the standard and no one will buy their dogs otherwise. Personally, all that standard and certification mumbo jumbo is unimportant to me, but it is important to some people. I just wish we had more options in America as to whether we want docked or undocked tails as customers. Most times we are forced to purchase dogs that are altered because they are done so young, by the time we get to buy them, it's too late.

I've seen tails docked. Many times. The pups flinch and they're over it. There is little, if any, blood...droplets maybe. (Povided it is done correctly.) If the pups were writhing in pain, spurting blood everywhere, I might feel otherwise, but they don't. There have been studies upon studies done as to why docking is best done at a certain age. The pain/sensation the pups feel is minimal. Period. "It causes great pain" cannot be used as a valid argument, because that is NOT TRUE. Am I a dog? Do I feel it? Can they tell me it doesn't hurt? No, but facts are facts and they've all been presented, like it or not. At least, that is MY take on it.

I respect everyone's opinion and am relieved that at least up til this point, people have been expressing their feelings in a mostly respectful manner. One point I find interesting that I have noticed in THIS thread, those of you who do feel so adamately against the practice, live in a country where docking is illegal. I'm wondering if your passion against it is based on the fact that your country (obviously) views the practice differently from ours as a whole. Hmmm...kind of like, you are what society makes you? Don't know how to put it in words... We take the our views because that is what we've always known...?

no its not what ive always known, yorkies came from the uk and docking was done here first, and for many years, i never really thought about it untill i had my 2 pups and there was no way i was gonna take them to have there tails cut off, i could of done as docking was done when i had them but i chose not to by my own choice not what the uk said or didnt say,the pups are now 12 years old and its only been the last few years that the uk has been against docking and its cos of the public that its been banned not are goverment telling us we can or cant do this. you said your reason is cos its breed standard? well so is a certain height, colour,weight and so on ,what about the pups that dont fit the other breed standards?

yes i think in some ways your right, there are fewer people in the uk so when us the uk public dont like something word of mouth spreads and it makes people think maybe people who b4 didnt even think about if it hurts the pup or if it should be done now they are no longer working dogs, then when a lot of people think about it they dont agree with it and it was then made illegal. the kids of today might be brought up thinking its wrong but still make up there own minds about it, when i was growing up it was normal to have it done and i never even thought about weather it was right or wrong but as soon as i did think about it when i had my pups i didnt think it was right to chop off there tails cos thats how a standard yorkie looks or thats how most yorkies looked at the time so i didnt have it done.

No offense but I don't think ANYONE needs to give you a "great" reason for why they prefer one way vs. another. You prefer them undocked, while lots of others prefer the look of docked, end of story. Different strokes for different folks, and it doesn't make anyone's opinions better than another. If you are happy with your countries laws against it, GREAT, stay in England. A lot of us here in America prefer the tails docked, so we'll just stay here in the US.

And in Canada, we dock. Great post and I also like our laws as they are, England can do as they please, I am not going to stop them. I would rather make my own decisions too thank you.

I agree. That doesn't mean we love our dogs any less or don't care about them. That was by far the most ridiculous statement. I guess England doesn't really care about women at all since there was a law stating that all disputed land will go to the eldest son

My Joey is an exception. Although purchased in the UK, he has a docked tail. I didn't realize that it was against the law here, until after I had him.

As an American living in the UK, I would really like it if we could keep the topic about whether to dock and not about Americans vs Brits. The British are about our only friends in the world these days; let's not alienate them, too!!!

I never put any thought into docking until I realized that I had a pup with an illegally docked tail and started looking around. I must say the Yorkies here - with tails - are pretty darn cute. If I were to obtain another Yorkie (either here or in the US), I'd probably prefer an intact tail.

Frankly, I think the laws in the US will eventually change. The Animal Rights people are bound to take this on as a cause at some point. Until then, can we not leave this as "you do it your way and I'll do it mine"?

You don't know Nobella at all but I do. I was lucky enough to meet her last December and let me tell you, she is anything but vain -- although she is a very beautiful girl. Her username "vainchick" is a private joke. And if you really knew Nobella, you'd know that she is a very kind, compassionate and caring person. She was a great support to me when my mother and Yorkie passed away one day apart. She even flew all the way from California to NY to see me during that time. Nobella is NOT vain -- in fact, she's the exact opposite.

I have a beautiful STANDARD yorkie who loves me to bits, even though her tail is cropped

Between all of the love and attention she gets, she obviously isn't upset that her tail was cropped. And ready for this??? I WILL HAVE MY NEXT YORKIE'S TAIL CROPPED TOO!!!

By the way, since they don't sell fruit in London on Sundays maybe they sell manners, that you can buy for yourself
