| Long or short tails??? I was just wondering how many people have long and short tails on their Yorkies and what difference it makes. Both my babies have long tails and Im not going to get the puppies done either,Im not saying its wrong but I was just wondering why people dock their tails. I had a poodle and his tail was docked,is it purely to make them appear better?? Oh yeah, does it hurt them and how do they do it! Can you tell I have no idea yet!!!! |

| i have 2 with tails they are the ones i bred and 2 with out but they were done b4 i got them, brandis tail is done badly and is way to short with a bone sticking out the end it use to be done when yorkies were used for ratting and was to prevent injury, but now its just done for the look of it ie breed standard. some people tie cord around the tail or a band and cut the blood off so the tail dies and drops off, but most have a vet do it, he uses a tool that looks kind of like a dog nail clipper and cuts the tail off. pups do cry when its done, in the uk its illegal for someone to do it and only vets can do it but it will soon be illegal for them to do it too as in the uk its seen as cruelty and it is not needed anymore as the dogs are not working dogs anymore.

| You know when you come on here and you darnt put your honest opinion as you may offend someone, well as you have had the guts to say it I will to, the sort of people who dock tails obviously care more about the way their Yorkie (or any other breed which has to suffer this) looks than the way they feel and dont deserve Yorkies at all. Its a sick practice and should be outlawed everywere. There, its off my chest now!!! Ill go back to being polite eh!! Shocked myself there! |

| Tail docking in Yorkies is done before 5 days of age. There really is not much of any bleeding and the tail at that stage is barely more than cartilage. The natural tail is very long and I didn't care much if it would ever be banned to dock tails but have now changed my mind about that one. In Germany, tail docking etc has been banned for years. You cannot even show a dog bought elsewhere with a docked tail. I read an article in a show magazine where a long time respected show breeder in Germany was saying that the injuries to tails in Yorkies has increased astronimically since this law has come in. They tend to break them easily I guess because they are long and thin. Then they are docked where the break is. I would rather stick with proper docking to about midlength of the tail than having all dogs with long tails and risking a painful injury. FOr those of you that have dogs with long undocked tails, certainly don't run out now and have them done on older puppies or adults at this stage, that wouldn't be right. They could very well be just fine but be aware they can injure them. |
