| ![]() I do not let my yorkies outside unsupervised unless the enclosure is fully secure, that would mean top, bottom and sides. We have all heard of the dangers that threaten these small dogs and it is not worth the risk in my opinion. If you wish to use a doggy door, that is fine, but imo it needs to go to an enclosed outside kennel that cannot be penetrated from either side or the top with absolutely no means of escape. ALL access to the outside is closed and my yorkies are contained in an indoor xpen when I have to leave them at home alone. I do not mean to pick on Kimberley here but rather to use her experience as a way to offer solutions to these types of problems. IMO no dogs should be allowed to even have the potential for getting loose and getting hit by a car or stolen when they are found. I do admit to being a fanatic about this. I have a westie (18 lbs) who is a digger and I do allow she and my standard poodle to be outside unsupervised, but I would never use any kind of a "hot wire" as I consider such devices inhumane and I am somewhat surprised that so many on here think they are acceptable for a yorkie especially since there are easy alternatives like the "invisible fence" that Glad suggested. I do not believe in physical punishment of my dogs or my children. Violence is never the answer in my opinion. I have constructed a wrought iron fence with rabbit guard installed below the suface and attached to the wrought iron. I also have installed Coyote roll bars across the top to prevent coyotes from jumping the fence. The earlier idea of a concrete lip at the bottom of a wooden fence is a good one as well, but with the threat of birds of prey, theft and other "accidents" it is not worth the risk imo to ever leave a small breed dog outside unsupervised. JMHO. |

| ![]() Kimberley, I'm so glad to hear that Rebel is back to his old self. All he needed was a few days to recover from whatever trauma he experienced. Now, as to the fence. I think you should take Villette up on her offer! She is evidently a pro when it comes to wood fencing. And I see by her picture that she is careful to leave some cracks for "spy holes" so that they can do their spying. I would certainly hate to have them miss out on that! And, she does live fairly close to you. If I weren't so far away I would volunteer to help, but CA is a fur piece from TX. |

You don't have to agree with everyone's methods, but you don't have to be so harsh, IMO. To be perfectly honest, I think it is quite uncalled for to accuse others of being inhumane and to claim they physically punish their dogs. I don't suspect any member here...Kimberley or otherwise...is "inhumane" in regards to how they treat their pets. It is uncalled for for you to accuse them of such. Quote:

| ![]() I have had dogs all of my life and yes, I have experienced tragedies when I was a child (a dog hit by a car, a dog attacked when I was walking it on a leash). I do believe this is why I am such a fanatic today and am so very very protective of my yorkies who are tiny and my other dogs. I share my experiences freely in an effort to prevent the same from happening to others. I know that no one is perfect and we are all here to offer suggestions and everyone is free to ignore what they cannot use or don't agree with and to use what they can. While I worry about my poodle and my westie being stolen, it is not to the degree that I do my yorkies. I have locks on all of my gates and I am lucky enough to live in a 24 hr guard gated and patrolled neighborhood. Yorkies are the number one most stolen breed. I usually bring the poodle and the westie in the house when I am gone as well. It is never for long and they are gated and safe in my familyroom. As for my opinion that electric shock is inhumane, I was merely stating my opinion, no different than my opinion that tail docking is inhumane. I know that most on this board disagree with my opinion but that is no reason that I should not express it, is it? Some view your accusing members who breed females under 5 lbs as being "inhumane or cruel" as harsh. Kimberley takes no offense I am sure because she is as confident in her opinion as I am in mine. |

Furthermore, I am sure Kimberley is quite capable of stating her feelings on the situation for herself if she feels the need to.

| ![]() Hey, come on folks, a hot wire is nuthin' down here in Texas. We use hot wires and cattle prods to control all kinds of varments. Why the only problem I have with the hot wire is one time my hot wire being so close to the ground to keep my Cocker Spaniels in the back pasture, sparked and set the pasture on fire. We got a nice bill from the fire department as a result of that. Kimberley is a good momma. By standards down here, she's probably a bit of a softy, but that's just my opinion. Y'all take care now!! |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Anyway, we've had the wire along one side of the fence for months now. Rebel tried it once or twice and never went there again. It's not like they are constantly drawn to it and shock themselves over and over again. Once or twice that first day out of the 5 months it's been up and that's it. You'd think that I was torturing my dogs with it. I've even been shock with it...walking barefoot and not watching where I was going. Is it uncomfortable...yes. Was it excruciating? No. My kids have even accidently ran into it. Are they dead or did they fry, no. Did they cry??? NO. But whatever. Everyone knows that I'm very opinionated but I have been trying to behave and not have arguments even though it gets VERY hard at times. BUT, this thread is not suppose to be about electic wires. It's about Rebel and how his personality had changed after he got out. LAWD! I hate it when people get threads off topic! ![]()

You asked for help and it is my opinion that some of Rebel's aggression and that of Chester in the past may be related to this, so I do not consider it to be off topic, but I apologize and will start another thread on the subject of electric fences and shock collars. Here is a link to the new thread for those of you interested: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31218 Last edited by SoCalyorkiLvr; 02-07-2006 at 01:15 PM.
