| You May Be Walking Your Dog Incorrectly per Google Article Okay, I'm no big PETA fan at all but I saw this headline on Google News and wanted to share it. It's a good read which emphasizes that "walkies" is for more than just toilet duty time for your dog, that in fact, in your dog's interests, it needs to be time for your dear baby to enjoy the big, exciting outside world, a place well outside his/her usual boundaries, allowed ample time to sniff and take in all the wondrous odors left by other critters and humans. Walkies was always like a mini-vacation for Tibbe - he came back from one revitalized and renewed. He was allowed the time to sniff, pee, poo, sniff, explore, dawdle, sniff some more, muse over his findings half way through the walk and and run, exercise the last part of the walk on the way back home and sniff his way through the front door. He always acted like he'd just gotten back from vacay after a good, long walkies session! He did, indeed, act like he'd just gotten back from an eye-opening excursion to some fascinating locale. Can't believe PETA seems to allow that we now have a right to have a dog living under our roofs! I'd heard that they had denied pet ownership as a right of those who keep them as pets! Don't know if that's true as I've never spent any time on their website but whatever the case, agree that dogs need time to enjoy and take in the great outdoors every chance we can give them - it's their natural element. https://people.com/pets/you-may-be-w...eta-president/

| I’m not a huge fan of PETA either they are hypocrites and put down more animals then they adopt out. I feel like they also kinda give animal lovers a bad name. Not a bad article though and I loved how they said use a harness. I have a nice fenced in back yard so I don’t walk them much when I know I should because it would be good for them but in summer mosquitoes eat me up and I’m allergic and in winter it makes my psoriasis hurt. I also agree with having multiples most dogs like having siblings. They also help exercise each other lol.

| I have nothing to say about the organization, but I agree that walks are more than bathroom breaks. I always let Mike stop for sniffing and exploring and whenever possible let him have a good run on a fenced tennis court. He does his bathroom business both inside and outside, so he knows that walks are for his pleasure. He is so energetic and I can see a big difference in his behavior in winter when our walks are a bit more sparse and short. He feels so content after exercising both his brain and his body. When I just got him I read somewhere that for your dog a walk is equivalent to a person's updating a newsfeed or checking e-mails)) that analogy made so much sense for me!!! because we know dogs get so much information through their noses! So i thought, hah, if you'd take my internet and my newsfeed and my connection to the outside world I'd be bored too and would as well start to chew on the furniture and bark at front door |

So many people who have small dogs don't think they need walking. I have always walked my yorkies every single day weather permitting. Duchess loves being outside and I love seeing her happy. An added bonus of walking them every day is they learn how to find their way home. Because we walked every single day, my yorkies knew every inch of the neighborhood. I let Duchess guide me back home by letting her lead and no matter where we are in the neighborhood, she knows how to get back home. Brandi (RIP) actually did get out without me knowing it but because she knew the neighborhood, she was able to find her way back home. After searching the neighborhood for her, when I got back home, she was sitting at the front door. It was at that moment I knew that regular walking of dogs in their neighborhood could potentially save their lives.

When we take our walks I let him smell every blade of grass, every rock and pebble, every bush and tree, after all it's his walk. I have a yard where he potties so the walks are not potty walks, it's so he gets familiar with the community and where he lives.

| We call Katy's time on the Leash, "Sniff and Poop". I doubt many on this forum needed peta to tell them how important 'Walks' are for dogs. peta should have their 'non tax statis' taken away! |

JOAN! I LOVE THIS! Katy too! Ha Ha Sometimes though, when it is raining, or pouring, or snowing, or oh so cold, or extra windy, or all of these together....*I* want to come back in quicker. Katy? This tiny little Huntress would stay out for hours if I let her.....IN ALL WEATHER! When it is extra cold or snowy out, I put a sleeved sweater on her under her waterproof lined coat. It keeps her warmer, and the snow from getting tangled and balled up in her hair. Many times <winks and laughs> She will be on her "Sniff and Poop" and I am ready to go in.....and I think.... Maybe I dress her tooooo warmly! <jk of course> We live on 10 acres with acres of Faaaaarrrmmm Land all around us. I too keep Katy on a leash at all times. It's not so much I don't trust her, it's that we have a LOT of Wildlife near us, and she could be gone in seconds! Nothing I could do about it.

I SOOOOO agree! I also, even when right next to our house, say to Katy when it is time to come in, "Let's go home." I figure if she ever should be loose or get loose, I could say this and she would head for the house. <bows head in shame> Once in a while, when it the weather is not so nice out, or I have something that needs attending to, and I don't want to stay out any longer, after she goes potty, I will say, "Katy, Let's go home and HAVE A COOKIE!" Ha Ha YES! It works!

| LET'S NOT FORGET! These walks, however short or long they are, ARE GOOD FOR US TOO! Not just the walking around. The clearing of the head. The smiling at our tiny dogs. The seeing things from their vantage points! |

| When we got our first terrier it was an experience to say the least. She was on the go just about every moment of the day, getting into trouble a great deal of that time.....until I finally found a harness small enough to fit her so I could begin taking her for walks. Well, at first she was taking me for walks....but the difference was immediate and wonderful. Anyway, she was so much different after coming back from a walk. For one thing she ran off a lot of that excess energy that young ones have and she really enjoys the explore. We live in a rural area with lots of wildlife so she has plenty to check up on. I always tell people with young dogs that are getting into trouble to take the dog for at least two good long and brisk walks a day, even if they have a fenced yard. A dog does not get that much exercise walking around in a yard. It's great for the people because they don't have to go out and spend time walking but the dog needs that exercise....and most of us can use fifteen to twenty minutes twice a day moving around. I have back issues but I still make sure the dogs get their walks. A tired dog is a calmer dog and is not bored and looking for something to do. Dogs do have a need for mental challenge as do humans. When they explore new places or scents that is helping to exercise the mind as well as body. They also need a good all natural chew toy. Chewing is a natural way for dogs to deal with any stress or anxiety that they may have. Our dogs tend to go get their bones when company comes. They know that they are not supposed to jump on or bother company so they deal with it by chewing on their bones. I swear that those two things saved our pup's and my life! The walks help them wear off that excess energy and the chews help them to deal with frustrations while inside WITHOUT destroying things around the house. I think PETA has done a lot of make pet owners look like loons. Maybe they have good intentions but it seems more like just another matter taken to the extreme. |

| I know I'm walking Duchess wrong. Actually she walks me. Duchess is so hyperactive that she runs our entire walk which result in her pulling me. I know I should get better with walking her but her running on our walks is my way of knowing if she is sick or not feeling well and I love her exuberance on walks it's so hard for me to restrict it. |

Walking quietly to heel can be trained for whenever it's absolutely necessary, such as if you have to take control when someone else passes, something ahead suddenly brews up or into a commercial space where lots of other people and maybe even dogs are; but for at least a good portion of her daily walks, what's so wrong with enjoying herself. Just be sure for her and others' safety she can be controlled when the time comes and that's for her safety, too. A totally uncontrollable dog outside on lead can be unsafe to themselves and others.
