| Hair Breakage We have had a 7 month journey with our 2.5yr old's skin and coat. It began last December with a small bald spot and clumpy hair loss in the surrounding area. Somewhat simultaneously she had generalized thinning. We worked with a vet and finally decided to remover her microchip because it was in the bald area and treatment did not permanently stop the loss in that area. That was one a month+ ago. She did very will with that and we seemed to have been over the proverbial hump until 4 days ago when we noticed clumpy hair mats around the area again. Upon close examination, it appears she is not losing any hair but instead it is breaking. The only thing that she experienced right before this was wearing her puppia harness again, so it's possible that the rubbing bothered the area. But I wouldn't say there is proof positive of this. Before we return to the vet, I put her on antihistamine for the last 4 days. The hair breakage seems to have slowed down, but the connection could be spurious. I have also been doing some reading on hair breakage, most of it wanting me to buy a miracle cure. But cure what?? If anyone has information about causes, prevention, or treatment/products, I would appreciate if you shared your knowledge. |

| Might want to consider seeing a Board Certified doggie dermatologist. They can do scrapings etc to see what is really going on with her hair and skin.

There have been two scrapings already, both negative. She has taken rounds of antibiotic/antimicrobial with steroid. Removing the chip seemed to have solved the problem of going bald in the area and hair has been growing back in. There is almost no sign of the bald spot, but the hair around where she was shaved has been breaking. So, I was hoping someone might have knowledge of hair breakage.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hair/skin issues can be greatly affected by thyroid - can't recall, did you check that when you were going thru the chip and skin stuff...?? Also, chronic hair/skin issues can be a sign of Cushings...doubt it's that, but my Wylie did get it very, very young too. Are you giving oil? If not, give some - I like Megga Dog from Amazon or Royal Coat Express by Ark Naturals.

They did do a full blood work up to rule out thyroid even though she was young and it was unlikely. That checked out fine. I don't think he specifically mentioned Cushings but he did ask about increased thirst, peeping too much, etc. We were giving an oil but stopped with all the treatments didn't work. I will start that again - it's still in the refrigerator. If it has expired, I will order new. I have also rechecked our grooming technique and training our daughter who stays with her occasionally to make sure we aren't doing something that either causes or exacerbates the problem. I am also trying to educate myself (thanks YT!) so if we have to pursue this further, I know what questions to ask and who to ask.

I called my breeder and had a nice long chat. Bottom line, we are changing food from Taste of the Wild to Origin, adding homemade bone broth once a day, continuing feeding fresh veggies & fruit, using an athlete's food cream on any spots, using coconut oil on dry skin, using Heartguard chewies instead of Revolution or any shots, and requesting our vet order Ultra for future vaccinations. She's basically recommending an all of the above approach by reducing challenges to her immune system, treating without meds (as much as possible), using higher quality foods, and improving skin quality.

I would be interested in hearing more of the feedback you have about too much protein.

| Petmd.com is one of my favorite resources. I used it as a resource for some of my papers for my classes. The Dangers of High Protein Dog Foods | petMD, Focusing on Protein in the Diet | petMD

These articles are interesting in that they disagree! We are trying a different diet for a reason and of course will be diligent to monitor impacts. Pet food formulations and standards change and a dog's dietary needs can change. We are adjusting to both. Thanks for information.

Athlete's foot cream will not address anything but what it's meant for - a very weak anti-fungal (are you fighting fungus...??!). Spreading coconut oil over any dryness will do just that -- cover it up. It doesn't actually treat a single thing. And using a different brand of vaccines...?! Highly doubt that will affect a thing. Orijen is a very nice food. But why Orijen...? What, exactly, are you trying to achieve via changing foods? There are other foods I'd recommend first. If you're truly interested in more natural eating -- why not then try something like SoJos - where you can add your own cooked or raw meat? That's as fresh as it gets. If you do suspect actual allergies, that's a whole other can of worms....then you should explore Apoquel, Atopica, or Cytopoint.
