| Tail Docking - Barbaric or Preventative? Hi Yorkie Lovers and Owners! Call me naive, but I have only recently heard of tale docking. I guess it never came up with dogs I've had in the past. I would like to post an article/video on the issue on my new blog (The New Yorkie Times - yorkiepride.com), but am trying to decide if I'd like to stand on a particular side of the fence. Some say that this made sense in the past since the terrier was a hunting animal to prevent injury, but nowadays is totally unnecessary because most owners have them as companions -- and docking in those cases is just for looks. I don't stand in judgement but am hoping for feedback. What do you all think? Anyone have experience on the matter? Thanks! |

| Here is a fairly balanced discussion of tail docking in Yorkshire Terriers: Yorkie Tails | Docking | Guidelines | Methods | Pros and Cons. Nowadays, it is done purely for appearance and to conform to breed standards for purposes of dog shows. Our Bella's tail was docked, but I wish it wasn't. I've watched videos of tail docking, and although they say that the young puppies don't feel the pain as much, it looks like a horrible procedure. |

| It's unnecessary and barbaric--- I'm a breeder of Yorkshire Terriers who has for many years now been advocating for leaving tails and dew claws intact since there is no compelling health reason to cut them off. I was at first treated with great disdain for my protestations but am heartened to see how attitudes have softened over the years. Attitudes in the US, due to the YTCA's stubborn attitude, are among the last in the world to change regarding a practice most informed dog owners now regard as barbaric and purely cosmetic. Forever hopeful, Susan

| I have a yorkie with a full tail and love it! I hate tail docking honestly. I think it's unnecessary.

| Both of mine were docked but I had no say in it. If I am lucky enough to have another yorkie I will insist on no docking

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I think docking is long overdue to be outlawed here in the US. Good article: Tail Docking and Ear Cropping - A Barbaric Procedures in Dog

| I agree with outlawing tail docking. Their tails are beautiful and it must be painful.

| Its up to the breeder, I suppose. I mean you would be hard pressed to find a yorkie from what is commonly known as a "reputable breeder" who has a tail by the time they are even advertised or put up for sale in the US. I mean long ago we raised another breed who was required by the standard to have docked tails and the pups did not even make a peep when they were done. I'm not sure their nervous systems are developed enough to feel the pain at that point(2-3 days old) It's being done because of the breed standard and that's it. Breeders are pressured to adhere to it in order to be known as a "good breeder" or "reputable" based on how well their stock aligns with the rules. |

| I had the honor to see the some of the best furbabies- ever! One of them had a huge grin and a beautiful, full, tail. (Although the other ones were just as amazing!) The companion for Chews will have a tail, and I'm going as far as starting up a rapport years in advance just for this very issue. All of Chewie's non-vocal communication is done with her tail and ears. She is very coordinated with her paws, too. I always wonder what more she could have done with her wee paws had she had her dew claws. Also, while most people might scoff for this, Chewie is terrified of any one that looks like her breeder and is very sensitive about her paws and tail. I think some of them do remember, and shes' one of them. I know this post is old, but I had to put in my 2 cents as well. I had my mind made up before seeing an intact kiddo, but seeing that just added another layer of cement to it. Europe has banned this, so it's time we hopped on board. |

| More and more US breeders and show people are flying in the face of this "standard". We are seeing many full tiails in the ring and they are winning. I always hated that a good US yorkie could not compete in Europe because of the tail. BTW the illegality of the tail cropping in Europe was not the breeders' doing - it was law makers and politicians who made the decision.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | No I don't think tail docking is barbaric nor cruel nor inhumane especially done early by a vet. What I think is more barbaric is automatic spay and neuter especially of very young animals. Folks the studies are building on the health repercussions of this and should not be an automatic unthought decision. Tail docking pales in comparison to this procedure.

Most of the studies on the bad effects of neutering involve large-breed dogs, and may not be applicable to Yorkies. The consensus we reached by the end of the long, long thread is that for female Yorkies, it's best to have them spayed after their growth plates have closed, but before their first heat, around 8 months of age. (X-rays can be taken to determine if the growth plates have closed.) UC Davis will be releasing the results of a new study on the effects of spay/neutering of 30 breeds of dogs on June 26. I do not know if Yorkies are included, but I'll give an update if I can find the information. | |
