| I have a message on my service today (since I was at the dog show and won It said we are interested in adopting a yorkie...SO I returned the call, they talked about what a loving family they were and how much theyve wanted a yorkie, then I went on asking some questions about their lifestyle etc. Next I asked what litter they would be interested in and directed them to my questionnaire...Low and Behold - she then said what are you talking about youre going to let us adopt a puppy??? I said perhaps you have the definition of adoption confused, they said yes we thought you were giving them away to good homes we cant afford to buy one ![]() YIKES!

| Well when I hear the word adoption.........as nice of a word it is........I think of free or close to free too, or reduced in cost. Where I live this is what it means. |

I can't believe some people actually think they can get a free Yorkie puppy from a reputable breeder, under normal conditions, for free. We are talking about professionals here. Funny folks.

| Asking price was really important thing for me before because I had budget. I asked about the price range in the first email as polite as possible. I still have budget but my way of thinking has changed after finding a good match breeder. My budget got expanded... after getting know the breeder and visiting her dogs. They are priceless, but I can definitely understand why people will ask price as a first question to make sure it is in your budget or not. To me, I felt like wasting my time and breeder's time if the price was really off from the budget. When you just start looking, I don't think many realized that it is not so good to jump on the cheaper pup, they might cost more in long run. This site is the best place to find great breeders. You can get to know different breeders and they can get to know you. I have had great experiences. I would rather come here than start calling ....to find a breeder. Before I found my favorite breeder, I went to different websites and started emailing them. For me I didn't want to call because some people might have heard time understanding my strong Boston accent.. (laugh.. NOT really! Michiko accent I guess), so I feel more comfortable emailing. I am sure it is better to call if you want responses right away. I found contacts from all over the place on Internet. I didn't get responses from 1/4 of my emails. But now I think of it, after scam threads, there are so much scams out there and we all have to be careful. For local breeders, oodle.com was helpful. (this is for different cities in US) But then I didn't feel like "wow I want to buy a pup from this person.. " On YT, you can really get to know people. I mean I might not be a good candidate for adoption by one email, but with some conversations, people can get to know me. It makes a big difference.

| i am going to admit, i was one of those people whos first question was "how much are your yorkies?" and for the most part, it was because when i started my yorkie search, i didnt know what else to ask- it seemed like price was the only thing that really mattered. i was unaware of any potential health problems that are associated with yorkies, i didnt know exactly what questions to ask, so i figured start with price! looking back, since hindsight is 20/20, i now have a plethora of questions i would ask before asking the price. i just hope that prospective yorkie owners dont get shunned because of their lack of knowledge in the beginning, because i swear, i am NO expert in the breed, but each day that goes by with my little guy, i learn so much more and YT has been such a help in this whole process. i really have a new found respect for breeders since i joined YT and actually get to see all you go thru- the joy of new puppies and even the sadness of losing your precious babies<3 Also, i always say i "adopted" Sirius- not bought him. buying him makes it sound like he is a pair of shoes or something, he is my child lol so i like to think that i adopted him. i hope that this post makes some sense to everyone- reading it over it sounds so scattered at any rate, im looking for another puppy by the end of the year, so i will put my new breeder questions list together, but more than likely i will pm some of you amazing breeders to see if i could work with a YTer when the time comes<3

| As breeders we have to learn to deal with all kinds of contacts from all kinds of people. There are times when I answer the phone and I am wearing one of my many other hats (mom hat, work hat, scout leader hat etc...) and it takes me a few minutes to switch into yorkie mode and I'm sure I must sound like a distracted idiot. Apologies to those who had to deal with the bumbling.. There are times when callers are very cryptic about what they are asking and it takes quite a bit of patience to hold a mutually informative conversation. There are times when I KNOW I've told people much more than they ever wanted to know. and then there are those great moments when someone calls and you just make sense to each other and you end up on the phone for an hour and you feel like even if you are not going to be meeting over a pup, you've at least made a difference in the way that they are looking. I admit to laughing over some of the ridiculous things people say sometimes when they call...and being appalled at some of the awful things I've heard ...and crying with people who share the heartache of the dog they lost. I takes an extraordinary amount of patience to actually listen for the questions behind the questions and try to communicate effectively. Some days I do it better than others. Budget is a big concern for almost everyone, me included...so I don't get offended if price is the first question...but it shouldn't be the only one.

| I don't have any pups at this time and usually only have a litter every 2 or 3 years, but get emails everyday asking for pups. Most of them ask for a teacup, which I then try to respond and educate them so they don't get taken. Many of the emails will give a one sentence question - If you have any pups - how much? Plain and simple. I try to email them back and just give them my website and hope the information page will help to educate them. I also screen prespective parents too! I prefer to speak to them, because they are more likely to be more honest and if something isn't right - they will usually slip up. It is easier to feel out what type of parent they would be in voice or person. I just feel really responsible to any babies I bring into the world and want to make sure they get the best - forever home!T. |

You forgot to mention the caller that when given the price, responds with "hey,I don't want the whole litter, just 1" lol When selling my pups, I ask as many if not more than most buyers. I have even been called some ugly names because I wouldn't sell my babies to certain people.

| Gimme the calls asking about getting a puppy anytime compared to "I got a girl Yorkie and I ama lookin' fer a boy to breed her to!" Now, I start..where did you get her? how old? how much weighs? health history of dog and ancestors? are her patellas luxating? (WHAA)? Has she been tested for PSS? (WHAA)? I loved the last one I got. Female in first heat! 10 minths old! Weighs about 3 pounds! wanted to breed her to get some of his money back..paid so much for her at the pet shop! I called them back-wife answered. I told her who I was and I said to her "Oh, my God! Why is your husband trying to kill such a young puppy?" She was elated..didn't want her bred! she had told him the dog was still just a baby and he could kill her. She was happy to have back-up. I asked to have him call me back and he did. By the time we hung up, he had the info for SNAP, spaying and the anesthesia, pre-op tests and cost of the procedure. Successful session if he followed up and I bet he did. His wife was gonna hold his feet to the fire.. |

| We used to breed German Shepherds and we got the craziest calls as well. The ones that ticked me off the most were the people who wanted to know if they would be mean, because they were looking for a guard dog. Well, hmmm, all of the sudden I had no pups to sell. Imagine that? We bred for tempermant and actually guaranteed temperment in our pups, and never had a problem. We had lots of people thinking we were asking too much, but oh well. Sometimes you have to interview a lot of toads to get your babies the right homes. Another funny thing was the reactions we got to our contracts that we required. I think they thought they could give us the cash and just take the pup, but nope. It was several pages and several signatures long. I think that most people understood and respected how we felt about our pups and what was expected from both parties. |

This is an interesting thread. I got my first Yorkie ten mos. ago and she was almost three years old then. The breeder retired her as she had a very difficult second pregnancy. I met my breeder on the internet and inquired about her puppies. Well, I later decided I did not want a little runt running around urinating all over. Friends filled me in on that, as I had not had a puppy in over 40 years. After telling the breeder that I decided against it, three mos. later she emails me about a female that she was going to retire. Said she would send pics if interested. I got the pics and it was all history. She is perfect in every way, but then again, aren't all of them. LOL The only thing I regret is that I see all of your darling pups, and I missed that stage of her life. I emailed the breeder with every question I could possibly think of. She answered each and every question. I then called her and we talked for an hour. I could tell she was totally obsessed with these darlings, and I really liked that. I think I interviewed her more than she did me. It ended up well as she invited me to visit all of her pups, and to meet the parents. It was great, and Sadie was the first one to run up to me. I did talk her down $50 and she said this would be fair, and allow me to get her to the vet to be checked. I keep in touch with her, and send her pics all the time. I am such a wimp that when the lady took her out of my arms, and said, "I need time to say good-bye to her". I ended up in tears, and she did not. I really admire the breeders, as I could not part with the puppies. Great topic. Kate I have learned so much from YT and when I get my second one, I will really be armed with ammunition.
