Default Is a Yorkie right for my multi dog household?

Hey everyone, new member. Long time lurker! I finally joined so I could read more about the Yorkie breed. I am thinking about adding a third dog to our household. We currently have a collie that is a great dog. He likes everyone and every animal. I have a Chipin that adores the Collie. The Collie is getting up in age and not as active as he used to be but still healthy. I was thinking of adding another pup so the Chipin will not be so lonely when our Collie moves on. The Chipin does not do well alone.

My sister has a Yorkie and he is an adorable bugger but pretty strong headed. She is still training him and he is under a year old. House breaking has been an issue. I have been thinking of a Yorkie but wondering how well they get along with other dogs? The Chipin (a min pin and Chihuahua mix) seems to only like our Collie. She is a real snuggle bug and a great dog. My husband would like another little dog and seems really fond of the Yorkie breed. I have been debating if a strong headed yorkie would be a good fit for our household. Then I thought maybe a Chihuahua or a min pin. I am still reading up on the breeds and was curious on your thoughts with how a Yorkie does in a multi dog household? Then my next concern is if I should get the same sex as the Chipin (she is female) or a male?

There are no small children in my household.

Still in the thinking phase as I want to make the best decision possible! Feedback is super welcome. I have really enjoyed looking at everyone pics!

Welcome to Yorkie Talk. We have an older, ultra cool Collie neighbor friend that my Max looks up to in awe. When we socialize with him on our walks, Max literally sits in awe.

If your Chipin seems to only like your Collie, she might not be thrilled to have an energetic, obnoxious Yorkie puppy in the house. Yorkies tend to be very playful and push boundaries. My 8 year Yorkies are snuggle bugs, but they also need lots of exercise and stimulation.

They are notoriously difficult to potty train, but not all of them. Yorkies can be willful, as you noted.

Best wishes in making your decision.

Yorkies are super high energetic pups , does your Chipin get along with your sisters yorkie? Maybe have your pup spend time with your sister yorkie and see how your pup gets along him the yorkie.

As far as potty training, I raised 4 yorkies from the age of 8 weeks old, they were 100 % pad trained with NO accidents at 5 months old, then I started training to potty outdoors, by 7 months old they were 100 % house broken with NO indoor accidents.
Schedules and consistency in potty training is a MUST in any breed.

OH boy, I always wonder how to respond to questions like these. It most depends on the temperament of your two dogs. And you will probably have a large size differential between the collie n Yorkie.

Remember that many adult dogs don't like pups. My youngest big gal was at least two yrs old before I allowed her out in the backyard with the wee one. She had a huge prey drive and is my happy space cadet. But a misplaced paw can seriously injure the Yorkie.

If you are willing to put in the work necessary it could work out just fine. Also have a safe haven for the Yorkie

Thank you for the replies! Yes, that is my concern about the energy level. I dont think the Collie would care as my Chipin was pretty high energy in the beginning. He gave her warnings when she got out of hand but I am not sure how the Chipin would do with a high energy dog. My sister lives out of state so that has been one of the reasons I haven't had the dogs interact. Do Yorkie's get more calm as they get older or are they pretty much high energy all the time?

My now passed 4 girls calmed down when they reached 9 / 10 years old. When they are wee little babies they are really high energy, wanting to play all the time, will pester other pets in the home to come play with them. After babyhood and when other canines have set the boundaries of what is unacceptable the puppy "may" respect that. All yorkies have dif. personalities, it just depends on the yorkie YOU get, and how YOU train your yorkies behavior. Your chipin will stay out of the way of the puppy as puppies LOVE to pounce in the faces of other family pets, puppies like to nip at and hang off any body parts of other pets, thus keeping older pets away from the puppy until they see this kid is staying. It will take appox. 6 weeks to 2 months for any older dog to accept a new kid and for them to stay on the floor with the puppy. Everything depends on your older dog's personality and the new puppies personality. My girls were all 3 years apart, they were loving girls with sweet personalities, they were well socialized with all animals. Bottom line is.....yorkies are high energy puppies, they do calm down a bit once command training has been taught and learned by the puppy, but they are still full of energy and want to play A LOT.

My Yorkies are 7 and 8 and still high energy. They aren't hyper, but they still need lots of exercise and attention. They love lap time and snuggling, but only if I provide them their regular walks, trips to the park, and car rides.

I think each yorkie has it's individual character and personality ... there are shy ones, outgoing ones, brave ones and aloof yorkies. Some potty train easy some not ( and I have noticed a correlation with how puppies are raised too - mill puppies are harder to house train because they were never taught to stay clean in the first place).
I would advise you to let your dog meet the puppy before adoption ... this might be hard because some breeders might not let you do a " try out". But not all dogs get along.
I had 4 foster puppies in the last year - one at a time and I have 3 own dogs - and only one of the puppies was liked by all 3 of my dogs immediately ( no adjustment period ... she came in and snuggled up with all of them within hours ) - one of the puppies was VERY dominant and scared my older dog Toby. Toby loves EVERY dog but he was visibly stressed by the arrival of Mr. Macho dog while he wanted to play immediately with Bella ( who is easy going and submissive).

As far as Yorkie personality goes - read through this forum and you will find description of pretty much every personality under the sun ... YES small dogs ( not just yorkies) can be harder to house train but if you are consistent and patient they will get it - just don't expect perfection before they are about a year old - maybe more ...

Our Bella is a dream to have ... she is social, loves other dogs, people and even small children, she loves to sleep on my lab when she is tired from play, she fetches and loves to romp around with her toys and follows me and the " pack" like a shadow. She has taken longer to potty train but she has made great progress lately at age 5 months.

Maybe you could foster for a while to see what personality traits you are looking for? I have always picked my dogs by personality not breed- even with little puppies you can already tell personality differences ...

I would not say that adult dogs don't like puppies ... mine do - it is often easier to integrate a young puppy despite the face jumping and craziness ... older dogs often instinctively give the babies leniency and gradually discipline them once they get older ... I have a neighbor dog who is CRAZY about puppies - she LOVES any puppy and will wine at the fence until she can meet them in person ... she will ignore older dogs ... but puppies are her " thing" ...

I appreciate all the replies. My husband suggested a chihuahua but to me the yorkie, although delicate seems to be a more sturdy breed if that makes since. I am still researching!

Delicate yorkies, yes if you are looking for a tiny under standard weight (5 / 7Lbs) . One that is 5 pounds or under. In total I have had 5 yorkies, their weight ranged from 9 to 17 pounds, yes, over standard weight but sturdy yorkies, delicate lol NO.

I wanted to provide an update! After thinking it over and researching and more researching. We got a yorkie puppy! He is adorable. I am very fond of the Parti or Biewer look. If I am saying this correctly. Basically I like the white fur.

Please let me introduce Bentley
