| If I'm trying to grow out a long coat, do I hold off on going to groomers? I'm trying to grow out Chloe's coat until it almost reaches the floor. Right now, at 5 months, her hair is about midway down her body. I'm assuming in another 5 months she should have floor length hair. Her face hair is also getting longer, but there are still some short hairs in the top knot that I'm waiting to grow out. I'm also trying to grow out the nose hair so I basically have not trimmed anything at all since I got her. Is this the proper way to grow out the long coat or do I need to trim certain areas like the bottom? She doesn't really get poop stuck in her bottom but I heard that area is suppose to be shaved clean? I have heard so many scary stories about people's dogs getting injured at the groomers or falling off the table that I really don't feel like trusting anyone.. unless there are some show dog groomers around my area which I'm not sure of how to find them? But since I'm in new york I'm assuming there has to be a show dog groomer SOMEWHERE.. just no idea where lol. Other than that, if I need to trim certain areas while her coat grows I want to try by myself. I'm such an overprotective mommy.. I know, I know.. lol.

| Growing coat I think is easy. Just remember you have to comb all the way to the skin. I trim Gunners bum once in awhile, and I trim the top third of his ears, and the bottoms of his feet. I just make sure I brush and comb him daily and he has a thick cottony coat. Good luck!

| If your puppy has a really good silky coat you'll be able to grow it out. But most yorkies have a combination coat for growing coat can be sadly is almost impossible. Growing the topknot is pretty much a matter of not trimming around the eyes, putting it up and using a small barrette or clip to keep the rest from their eyes. IMO you should find a good groomer now to establish a routine. In the least the ears need to be tipped, hairs plucked and most people like a sanitary and butt trimming.

| If you don't want to groom her yourself I'd take her to the groomer soon to get her used to it. I'd have them give her a bath, sanitary trim, tip her ears, trim around her paws, cut between her paw pads, and trim her nails. You can also get her arm pits shaved to help with matting. Make sure to stress you don't want them to cut by her eyes. I use people hair scissors. I bought them recently from Sally Beauty Supply, the brand is eclipse and they were about $10. |

| My girls are in show coat. I groom myself - which is rather simple. Weekly bath and condition, daily brush/combing and a simple ear, sanitary, feet trim when necessary. I just don't trust anyone with clippers or scissors around my kids, except for my mentor and and a few select folks that I truly trust. If you are going to use a groomer, find one that grooms show dogs in general and yorkies in particular if possible. |

YT 1000 Club Member | I'm trying to get Rasta into a show coat. He's almost 11 months and it's about an inch from the floor. I groom at home. I just trim sanitary areas, paws, shampoo once a week, and comb/brush daily. I use mustache scissors...if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself I agree with the above person who said to find a person who grooms show dogs. |

| I have chosen to groom my two myself. I avoid groomers because my two are more comfortable at home. I have also heard the horror stories, and it's not worth it. If you are growing the coat out, just do a sanitary trim.

| I would be very picky on which groomer I used. I have both of mine in long coats. I have a groomer who works out of her home that we have used for years. I went to two other places before her and it was nightmares. So be very careful! If it is a good groomer, you should be able to explain to them that you are growing the coat out. He/she should know what needs to be done by them. I would get references on the groomer!

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I would go around and talk to the groomer. Tell them what you want and what you do not. I would ask them to bath her, a sanitary trim, tip her ears, trim around her paws, cut between her paw pads, and trim her nails. Ask them if they have groomed full coats before.

I can definitely understand not trusting people with your babies. I feel that at the end of the day, a groomer sees someone else's baby as just a dog.. But to us it's our little fur baby. I can definitely see this with my vet.. When I bring Chloe I can never go by myself because I just can't bring myself to let go of her when she is on the vet table. The vet wants her to just roam on that table.. And I clearly know she will want to jump down if I let go.. So I just don't let go lol until I see the vet is holding her. So.. Bringing her to a groomer where I'm completely nowhere near holding her or protecting her.. Nooo way.

| I probably wouldn't take mine to the groomer if I was trying to grow a show coat, unless you know and really trust that groomer. I've had them not listen to what I wanted done too many times! The last time they shaved her nose. I only take yumi to get her nails cut and ears plucked now. Also if she still has some of her puppy fur you might want to wait until its cut off before growing her out. Yumi's baby fur was a lot more likely to tangle and mat than her adult coat. In a long coat I would think it could be a pain. |

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I have taken Galen to a groomer when I was growing his coat and I did not have a problem. It actually helped me start grooming him myself. I just kept up with the trimming.
