Groomer's don't go all the way in, they express them from the outside. This does not get all the fluid out and they will fill up faster.

My vet explained if they are having healthy poops, they express themselves every time they go to the toilet. Not having proper poops they can fill up and so lead to an infection, only a person properly trained to do it should be (preferably your vet, they were willing to teach me, so I don't have to pay someone if I ever needed to).
healthy anal glands don't need expressing, was my point and groomers just do it as part of the service and my vet said that is completely unnecessary and should stop. I asked this advise for my friend who told me her groomer was doing it every visit

Agree. Tibbe's in the past have only needed expressing usually after being sick or something. If his BM's are normal, he usually does fine with his anals so his vet won't touch them routinely.

Jasper had been scooting, chasing his tail and biting. So, when the groomer came last week I had her do his Anal glands. She said it looked like it should and the amount was normal. I just hope I won't have to get it done again any time soon though. At least he is back to normal. Hope your baby is better soon!!

Thanks for the heads up. For now though, I will be staying with the new food I got and hopefully this will return my Bailey back to a no scratching little guy He has scratched off a bit of his hair and hoping that it will grow back when he is well again.

Good to know... Bailey has had good bm's (bowel movements) since he's joined our family Having said that, he was scooting a bit when this all started, so that's why it was suggested, I believe, that he get his anal glands done. The vet said that they weren't bad but he did do it since Bailey was already there.

Thank you for the well wishes. I'm hoping with the new food that things will slowly get back to normal. Just wondering why you hope that you won't have to get it done again any time soon? Bad experience??

Peanut has normal BM’s all the time he is very healthy, however he needs to have his anal’s expressed. I know how to express them, but Peanut won’t allow me to do it. He won’t even allow me to cut his nails.

Groomers don’t do it correctly. What I was getting at is if someone’s pet was biting at his bum or butt scooting more than likely they will need their anal’s expressed, just because they aren't sick, showing infection or swollen doesn't mean they don’t need them expressed.

Thanks for asking... so kind of you Bailey is doing better and likes his new food. Poor guy is still biting his butt some and he has lost some hair there He is looking almost like a hairless dog in the back end I hope with time that all the biting/scratching will end... and that his hair grows back. May need to get a hair piece for him. haha

May I recommend a bath and then spray half and half distilled water and organic apple cider vinegar all over the dogs body especially the area he's biting. It will soothe and heal any irritated areas.

What food are you giving him?

I have changed his food to Blue Buffalo, turkey and rice. He really seems to enjoy it.

If you cut out all the treats, chews, environmental and he's still like that.. It could be the food. What are you feeding him? I think there are chances where dogs develop allergies just like humans.

Thanks to all for responding to this post. As Bailey was still biting his butt and leg, with hair being gone as a result, I took him in to the vet yesterday. I was told that he was just biting the areas that the fleas had bit him and it was irritated as a result. He gave him an antihistamine shot and he also did his anals. This is the second time he has had his anals done in the last month I hope that it will be a longer time in between that he will need that done. He hasn't biten his usual spots, so I think that we are over that hump. So glad to see!!!! I'm sure that Bailey feels better as a result. Again, thanks to ALL that took the time to post replies on this thread
