| Terrible experience - my dog got attacked by a husky Hi all, first off I want to say that she is o.k. THANK GOD. Second, if any of you have any experience and or suggestions as to what I can carry (such as pepper spray), what I should do (try and kick the dog) or not do (antagonize dog even more), I would appreciate it. I was walking Beanie Monday early evening around my friend's neighborhood. I take her up there because it is "suburbia" and she has a huge fenced in yard where I can let Beanie run around free and actually be a dog. For some reason, she pees and poops better when she is on leash - maybe she thinks she isn't supposed to go in my friend's yard. Anyway, I knew she had to go, so I put her harness and leash on and walked her around the nice neighborhood. I stay away from yards where I know there are large dogs. Some yards, the STUPID owners don't even have the dogs tethered or fenced. Anyway, I was walking past this yard and in a split second, this HUGE husky came flying at us so fast that I couldn't even react and pick up my dog. The husky was over her and had her in its mouth and was shaking her. I was screaming like a banshee at the dog and trying to get Beanie out of her mouth. The wife came out of the yard and grabbed her dog and I was able to pull Beanie up to me by her leash. I was crying, Beanie was freaking out, the owner was crying and saying I am so sorry, over and over. I was so afraid to even move my hands because I thought I was going to be covered in blood or my dogs neck was going to be broken. The husband came out and was like, what is going on? My dog would NEVER do that, I just don't know what happened. Of course, I flipped out on him and was like how the he11 can you allow this animal to be loose, you NEVER know what a dog is going to do. He started to take the dog inside and the thing got away from him and charged me AGAIN. Of course, the wife started yelling at the husband, etc., etc. Anyway, I took my dog back to my friend's house and we examined her and she was fine, just covered in dog spit. This isn't the first time that we have been in bad situations with other dogs, but this is the first time that something like this has happened, where a dog actually got to her. I just don't know what to do. I try to walk a line with allowing her to be a dog and to take her out on walks, etc. but also protecting her. I don't want her to be just an indoor, pampered dog that is afraid of everything and never goes out. And no, I haven't reported the dog. And yes, I know I probably should, but I also feel like if that dog wanted to kill my dog or ME, it would have. Maybe it thought Beanie was a rabbit (there are a lot of them in the area) and realized she wasn't which is why he let her go. I blame the idiot owners who allow their dogs too much freedom and think that nothing is ever going to happen. Anyway, if any of you have the same problem and have a solution (i.e. pepper spray or some other type of deterrent, I would appreciate any help. |

| It was trying to kill your dog how yorkies kill rats when they are ratters is by grabbing them by the neck and shaking them until there neck breaks that is what the dog was doing to yours. How would you feel if you if you didn't report this dog and it did this to another person but actually killed there pet or worse injured it so badly it suffered for hours before dying?

| I agree, the dog (actually the owners) need to be reported to Animal Control. This is an accident waiting to happen. This dog was NOT playing with yours....the intent was to seriously maim or kill if you ask me. There is not much that will be done now since all is well; but once he gets a visit from Animal Control, the owner will be on notice to be more responsible and keep his dog from running off leash.

| This happened years ago when I was a teenager. I was walking my Maltese (he was a year or two at the time) and a boxer charged from across the street. He thrashed my dog around by the neck. I was screaming. The owner ran across the street and managed to pull her dog off. I don't even remember talking. I just ran back to my house. We took him to the vet that night. He had a torn ligament and a puncture wound from the dogs tooth. My mom took the bill down to their house and told them they needed to pay but the husband got in my moms face yelling that she should consider herself lucky his dog didn't kill our dog. She wanted to take it to small claims court but was to afraid of them. I wish she had done something more about it I'm sorry for your baby <3 glad she's ok!

YT Addict | I am glad Beanie is ok (side note our first dachshund was named Beanie lol). I agree that dog and owners need to be reported. Most States towns have a leash law and if that dog is off leash it would probably attack again. I have heard of using a high whistle or air horn. This is a website that has some ideas. I hope it helps Responsible Pet Ownership Blog: What to Do if another Dog Attacks Your Dog |

| I'm so sorry this happened to you! Thank goodness Beanie wasn't injured. Just a suggestion...you might want to take him to the vet just to be sure there isn't an injury you can't see. You never know. I would definitely report this to Animal Control. The next little dog this happens to might not be so lucky.

| I am glad to hear Beanie is ok. I can only imagine how scared you guys were. While my dogs have never been attacked(thank goodness), we have had a lot of loose dogs approach us in off leash our neighborhood. One day some idiot was letting her 4 dogs out of her car...ranging in size from a boston terrier to a lab...and they rushed my two dogs. My SO freaked and was trying to pull Ricky away and had him hanging from his harness. I had picked Prince up(I always do when I see another dog) so I was able to pull the big dog away. The owner apologized and nothing happened...but it would be a little late for an apology if something happened to one of my dogs. I would DEFINITELY report it to Animal Control. By law, people have to have their dogs under control or contained in their yard and that dog is going to end up hurting someone else...a child...another dog etc etc. There is also pet mace at Petco. It's under $20.00. I haven't bought it yet, but I am highly considering it. I don't even feel comfortable walking my dogs in my neighborhood without my SO because of all of the loose dogs around. I would feel horrible macing another dog...but I would feel even worse if my dogs got hurt and I could have done something to stop it. Last edited by theporkieyorkie; 08-07-2013 at 07:47 AM. |

I'm sorry this happened to you, but I agree with the others and I would report them. Not only did this happen once, but twice. Once would be too many for me, especially how they handled it. If that dog attacked once, he will attack again.

oh wow, I didn't know there was any such thing as Pet Mace. I live in MA, and mace is illegal here, so I don't know if they can sell it around here, but I am going to check into it!! Especially now that it is getting dark earlier and I am walking her in the dark. | |

| Thank goodness Beanie is alright. That being said, you really must report this incident. If not to animal control, then to the local police. In some states, there's a "one free bite" rule. That is, a dog is permitted one time to attack another animal or person before the owners can be held responsible for anything. I don't know the laws in your state. Once reported, then if this happens again to another animal or person, then the owners are responsible for all damages & costs. In my state (New Jersey), you can go after the owners even if there's no prior history of biting/aggression. You may be preventing a future attack to your dog, another animal, or person by reporting this incident. Owners must maintain control of their animals at all times. BTW, I've had a couple of near incidents with Lucy. I was able to scoop her up when dogs came charging at her. I'd have no problem kicking the crap out of any animal that got a hold of her, however. I'd do the same if a dog attacked my children as well. Just me. Last edited by luvlee; 08-07-2013 at 08:02 AM. |

YT 1000 Club Member | I'm an advocate of Mace...I live on an army base where everything is rules and regulations but we still have irresponsible owners who let their dogs run free or who dont properly secure their gates/fences. Please report that owner/dog I would hate for someone else's baby to be attacked by their husky because of their negligence. At the very least they'll be fined and look into properly securing their pet to avoid paying more fines. I agree with the above poster that I'd have no problem knocking another person's animal out of the way to protect mine. I protect my pets as I protect my child. |

YT 2000 Club Member | dog I would report that dog immediately. He is vicious and will attack again. The owners should have known that they need to restrain their dog. Get some mace. I was in Cabellas sport shop and I think Bass Pro sells the stuff. It is mace stuff to spray. You need to carry something in case this happens again. I only go up and down my street and even then I have my mace ready. You never know. |
