Default Pet store puppies :(

Yesterday I went out to lunch with my brother and there was the "one and only" old fashioned pet store in the plaza nearby. I thought I would stop in to see if they had any unique toys for my frustrating kids since I usually shop at the chain stores. Much to my dismay this store still had many puppies and some very young kittens for sale. There were two tiny Yorkies there as well. I couldn't believe that they were asking 1300.00 for these little guys that we all KNOW come from a puppy mill. They also had a sign over the puppies saying they do financing. My heart sank and I almost started to cry seeing all the various newly bathed and fluffy looking puppies knowing their parents are out there somewhere probably living in the worst conditions imaginable. To even further the grief is the financing idea. IMO this is encouraging uneducated prospective owners to buy from them rather than do their homework and buy from a reputable breeder rather than support this terrible situation. I really wish people would stop buying from these places so the mills would shut down.

That's exactly why I don't even drive by, let alone walk by, pet stores anymore. I can't take the heartache.

Buying anything from a pet store that sells pups is also supporting them buying there puppy mill pups.

I would also encourage you not to purchase anything from stores like this. Buying toys/food/treats from pet stores that sell puppies is supporting them. Luckily around here, we had one of these stores... But it went out of business because so many people chose not to support it.

I can't go near them. It is too heart breaking. Your right about the financing thing. People will buy them and not be able to afford the vet bills due to the payments they are now making.

These people are being duped into paying that much money for a puppy mill pup when they could get a good healthy puppy from a reputable breeder for around the same price......without financing of course. The puppy mill dogs more than likely will not look much like the little Yorkie these people think they are getting once it matures. So sad.

I dont know which end would be the end to attack from....the pet store, the consumer that is more than happy to purchase one of these babies because of the instant gratification of walking in looking for a puppy, and walking out with one. I have had no less than 15 people call me in just the last week, looking for a puppy for Christmas. Not interested in finding a reputable breeder, just wanting a baby NOW.....not interested in, WHAT?!!!! WAITING LIST?????!!!!!! OMG!!!!!! NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING!!!! NO, THANK YOU, I NEED THIS BABY TO GIVE AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT, IN LESS THAN A WEEK!!!! Now.........really.........hopw much thought has gone into this purchase? How educated are these people about puppies in general, Yorkies in paticular? I try to educate these people, but they are not interested in my efforts......I even had a lady tell me, "UI am having a terrible time finding a Yorkie....these dogs must be flying off the shelves! This is probably a wonderful time of year for YOU! If you had enoiugh puppies, you could finance your entire next year!" I told her, "NO....and I deliberately do not sell dogs during Christmas, except to people that have been on a waiting list for one, have been approved as new owners, and were not coming looking for a puppy as a Christmas gift....it just worked out with the breeding and the delivery that they end up getting a baby near Christmas.".....she could care less about what I think, she could care less about any breeder that has integrity and a reputation...all she wants is a puppy....and then when that puppy gets sick and dies on her in a couple of months, suddenly she wants a breeder that stands by her puppies, etc..... So, until consumers know NOT to buy from pet stores and puppy mills, trhey will continue to flourish. Supply and demand....when demand goes away, so does the supply....

I know what you are saying and agree. But the fact is that the general public, for the most part, have been trained by these very public pet stores and the internet to expect instant gratification. They are given false information about the breeding. People think that you just put any 2 purebreds together and get perfect results. Most of these places can put in an order for a puppy and have it within a week because the puppy mills have enough dogs incarcerated cranking out pups like a toy factory.
There are very few areas that have information available about real professional, reputable, purebred breeders.
Sometimes people feel offended by talk like this. It is not an attack against the dogs. It is about the cruel and inhuman treatment of puppy mill breeder dogs and the huge amount of sick and genetically injured puppies being cranked out by these places.
I know about such things because I had many family members involved in the local AKC sanctioned conformation, obedience and agility clubs. We always knew someone who knew someone who was ethically breeding whatever breed we wanted. Apparently this kind of information is not widely available to the public.

After getting out of an office visit I saw a pet shop with a sign that said we have Christmas Puppies so DH and I went in. I wish now I had taken a picture because in 3 big glass tanks were about 15 puppies or more in each tank. So many breeds to choose from. I asked if they had any yorkies. They had two yorkie mixes and one female yorkies....I must say all the puppies were cute but I think that about all puppies. I asked the salesperson a few questions about the female yorkie (1) how old? well I think about 3 and a half months (2) shots? oh yes she has had all her shots up to date on everything all you have to do is buy her and take her home. (3) Is she AKC reg and where did she come from? Oh I'm not sure where they came from I think out of state we just got them in yesterday...AKC what is that? (4) How much are they asking for her? $1599 because she is a teacup (5) Really a tea cup how much does she weigh? Right now 3lb and she won't get anybigger. My DH was looking at me so strange as I was saying Chloe needs a friend...DH says Chloe has enough friends she doesn't need anymore. The sales person asked if I wanted to hold her I told her no just looking. As we were leaving the pet shop my DH asks me .... your not serious about getting another puppy are you? We just got Chloe a month ago. (we also have a Sheltland Sheepdog who 4 years old) I started laughing .... no we aren't getting anymore puppies ( not right now LOL) I just wanted to see the puppies and see how knowledgeable the salespeople were. First off she didn't know for sure how old the puppy was.....but she had all her shots.....didn't know what AKC Registered was. But did know she was a teacup and weighed 3lbs right now and wasn't going to get any bigger. I still can't believe it.... And people were buying puppies there unbelievable!!!! It really makes me wonder what is going to happen after Christmas with these poor little puppies.

There is a single owned pet shop in my old town in FL that actually doesn't use puppy mills or anything like that. They have a list of the breeders that is at your disposal. They are all healthy and come with a certificate whatever that means, I don't know much about breeding other than what to LOOK OUT for. But they don't charge an arm and a leg for designer dogs. They only have puppies when there are any to be had, if that makes sense. They don't mass breed is what I'm saying. One day you can go in and find boston terrier. But won't see that breed for a while. Because it's not mill puppies. I seen a chinese crested puppy one time and was so attached instantly, love those. But never seen that breed again. The puppy had gotten a home real fast, too. It's just what is or is not available from their list of breeders they work with. They almost always have puppies, but it's all kinds of breeds and never just the same kinds over and over, milled. Those break my heart.

They have glass kennels that are open on top. You can pet the puppies and take them to the carpeted area to play with and they have special clean up materials if they make a mess. But you have to be accompanied by an adult if you're a child. They have 2-3 workers present in the puppy area alone to make sure they are clean and safe. I really like that socializing way they have, instead of behind glass and you can't touch the puppy and the puppy can't touch you. That breaks my heart so bad!! I love this place that they CARE about their animals and let you handle them and they can feel love and attention every day they are there.

Maybe this will take heavy on some, but I really don't think this place uses mills. They give you the proof with having the breeders list and numbers so you can check them out yourself. It is the only pet store I've ever been in that I felt like the animals were actually well taken care of.

It would be better if these places allowed the local shelters to bring their pups and dogs in to display. I'm sure a lot more homes would be found for the homeless puppies and dogs that are ignored all year round. Of course there is no money to be made in that.

Well let me tell you, when I discovered they had puppies I refused to buy anything from them at all. Here the chain stores "only" allow rescues to come into their stores to look for prospective adoptions. I am happy about that and have actually adopted two of my kitties from rescue organizations in those stores. As for reputable breeders, I totally agree. My first dog I had (cocker spaniel) came from a breeder who showed her dogs. I contemplated getting another like him at first and looked uo the kennel. Low and behold, 34 years later the kennel is still operating (although run by the breeders daughter) and still showing their dogs. When I bought mine, the breeder had taken over from her father. That's a very dedicated family to the breed.
Unfortunately, I was not as cautious this time in getting Wallee and let my guard down a little. The breeder I got him from was retiring from breeding and Wallee's litter was to be the last. I went to her home to pick him and she gave me a written health guarantee. Both of his parents were onsite and she also showed me their health records. As it turns out, people up the street from me who already had a yorkie loved the coloring of Wallee so much they adopted his 3 year old retired and spayed mom. Although I would have possibly set myself up for issues, having his mom nearby will at least show me "half" the problems he could have. As it turns out, Wallee seems to have gotten the best of both his mom and dad as he is better looking than either of them. I will just pray he continues to be healthy as his parents both were. I would NEVER buy from any puppy mill in any way shaper form.

Petco and PetsMart always have local shelters on specific days every week or every month I am not too sure which, and they have their dogs and sometimes cats there to try to adopt them out. I haven't seen a Petco or a PetsMart that has puppies in a long time. I think the only place I know of besides the one that uses local breeders which is not a large franchise is the Petland ones. That's the only place I've seen with actual puppies and is a franchise pet store. The others only have local shelters offering dogs at them. They do sell fish, however! and birds and a couple reptiles.

No reputable breeder would ever sell there pups to a pet store they want to know who is going to buy there pups and what kind of place they will be going to. Also no reputable breeder breeds mixes and that what "designer dogs" are. This still is not the place to get a puppy!
