| 3 yr Old Female Yorkie still poops in the house We trained her to use a pad outside on the patio which she always uses to pee but it took forever to get her to poop out there. She has never peed and pooped at the same time so to help her we installed a dog door so she can get outside when she has to go. Any little excuse (or at least that what the humans think) to not got out side to poop and she would poop in the house always in the same location on a nice rug. When she got older (1yr) we cleaned the carpet to had her pooping outside. We always would make a big deal out of her pooping outside and gave her a treat. Often she would not come in until we went out to see that she pooped outside and she would do her little dance knowing she would get a treat. She would still poop in the house enough to be upsetting so we cleaned the carpet and put it in storage. We were have good success with her pooping outside and the few time she would do it in the house we would find some excuse for her like thunder or the Gardner or windy. But she would still pee out side and then come in to poop. For the most part we thought we had trained her bad habit and for about a year she did not go in the house. So we put the carpet back and still not problem. When we started doing bathroom remodeling she did not like the tools on her patio. She should pee outside put started pooping on the other rug in the house not the one that she used to poop on. I found that strange since that was the rug she would take her treats too. Now she is pooping on the first carpet again. Like today she peed outside then when we went shopping she pooped on the carpet. She is 3 yrs old and this it just nonsense. She will always pee outside and she knows that what she is doing is wrong. If she sees me walking toward the carpet she slithers across the floor looking for a place to hide. My first question is can this breed be trained to always go outside? This is the first small dog for me and I never ever had this problem with larger dogs. How to train a 3 yr old dog that get more loving then any human in the house, food and water and a warm bed, mine, to sleep in. I can not have her pooping in the house and on my rugs. |

| I don't think it is breed specific because I have the same problem with Angel minus the rug. Piddle, no problem. She rings her bell and goes. She also has to go back in between jobs so we turn around and take her back out. Stand there, stand there, walk her around, stand there, walk around. Go back in the house and the moment your back is turned she poops on the hardwood floor in the living room. If she can't get to the living room she will do it any place she can. She knows better, we give her treats and still she does it almost every day. Sigh. So I have no advice but I feel your pain!

| My first yorkie, Gina, stook forever to stop pooping in the house. The doggie door did the trick. Now Zoey has gone on wee wee pads since I got her. She will pee and poop outside but I keep a pad in my bedroom and at night she gets off the bed, poops and then comes back to bed. No problem. Maybe you should leave some pads out - it's so much easier than trying to catch them in the act. I also leave one pad downstairs just in case she needs to go when I am not at home.

| Teach her to poo on command. Yes this can really be a conditioned response to your verbal cue. Pooing on cue is taught, (this is done with a paper match or cotton tip swab and petroleum jelly. When you take her out on a leash, after she pees, pick her up and take a pre-lubricated paper match stick <The paper end of course>, insert into dogs bum about r you would like to use. Just like they automatically try to push a rectal thermometer out of their bum, they will push out the match. When they poo praise (and treat if you want to.) It takes about 7 days to train an inside pooper, to do it outside. Or you a potty pad on her favorite spot. Or confine her when she is not being supervized. Good luck and best wishes.

| I've never heard about the petroleum jelly on a match stick method - if that works for her, please let us know!!! Maybe you should speak with a trainer who has much experience with small breeds or yorkies. My initial thought is to re-confine her, feed her at a set time and take her out 1/2 hour after she eats. What goes in must come back out. I have a new puppy. I was going to use the pads for her, but my sister scolded me: "once she poops in the house, she'll think it's OK to poop in the house!" Scared the be-jeebers out of me. So, I'm up a 6:30 a.m. walking my puppy. She's fed at about 7:45 a.m. If she hasn't eaten by 8:30 a.m., the food is taken up (I leave water.) Then I take her out on regular intervals. I do the same thing in the evening. It hasn't been easy. My Lucy sometimes won't eat (I sometimes stand with her at the food bowl and sort of feed her dry food from my hand.) We've walked in the rain. We've walked and nothing has happened. But we keep walking to the "spot(s)". The process has taken up a lot of my personal time (and I work too.) I'm not confident that she's near done with training, so we're trudging on. So far, Lucy hasn't peed or poo'd in the house. She holds her pee a long time though and poos 1x per day. I think you might need some professional guidance to work again with both YOU and your baby! Best wishes, Tracey |

| I learned my lesson! CRATE TRAINING WORKS! Troy as a puppy started in an ex-pen. I got sentimental and lazy and started letting him sleep with me. He pooped under the bed! I bought a crate but it was too big! He pooped in it all the time! I got lazy and sentimental again and stopped then let him just have puppy pads in the house. That didn't work either! Got smart, bought a smaller crate! Got him on a food/potty schedule! I got consistent and voila, potty trained dog!

| I would be delighted if my boys would pee outside, even if they poo'd inside. Their poo is firm and comes up with a couple of sheets of toilet paper! But the pee is getting me down. I keep pads out; I have a screened in porch with pads; and have taught my little one to toilet on rags in my bathroom... but I don't know where they get all this liquid! ...they are confined to tile and hardwood during the day, but my year old carpets are almost ruined already. I had brand new Martha Stewart carpet put down after the trees fell on my house a year ago... I love these boys, but they are testing my patience. |

| Thanks for all your replies. When we came back from shopping today and found the poop on the rug we put her in the family room closet, with the door open but a barrier so she could not get out. That has become her cage. We had a quite day of videos since it was raining. We let her out to pee and then back to the pen. about 10 she came one and jumped on the couch to be with us. About an hour later we need to go out for a minute and she followed us out like she wanted to come with us. We pet her and told her we would be right back. How stupid is that. We were back in 10 minutes and she was still outside waiting for us dancing with excitement. Yea right. She went in and pooped on the rug then came out to wait for us. The doog get so much attention and loving that all I can think of is that she is pissed that she could not go with us so she pooped on the carpet to convey her displeasure. So how do I tell her that all her actions will get her is a NEW HOME, cause we will not put up with this. I have had several Golden Retrievers, a Dalmatian, Labs, mutts and Rottweiler and never ever had this problem. Everybody I know with a little dog like this has this problem most much worse then we do. We will not change our life, EG no rugs, to please the dog. We feed her, play with her, take care of her, groom her and change her pads. For that we get her attention on our lap where we pet her and play with her. This is a once sided relationship that I can live with but not if she continues to poop in the house. She will never poop on he cage because she like it clean. I once put her poop from the rug to her cage and she did not like that. We I came back she had buried in under her pillow where it was out of sight out of mind. She is a smart dog but I don't know how to tell her her day are numbered. Where is Eddie Murphy when you need him! |

Your pup needs a comfy CRATE (no water/food in crate.) You need to observe her, feed her and take her out ON A SCHEDULE. That is inconvenient - but it's only temporary and IT DOES WORK. I'd suggest you hire a good trainer to work with you. If you can't be home part of the day to take her out, hire a sitter to do it. Once she learns the correct way to go - she'll do it. She may be in the crate for a longer period of time than if you had done the training at the beginning. At least while in her crate, she can't damage your rug any more. Good luck. Calm down. It will all be alright. Best wishes, Tracey | |

| I did crate train Angel but as she hit the one year mark this problem got worse. I think I am going to do another round of it and see if I can break the cycle. It will be a fight with hubby but he is just going to have to suck it up.

| I have the same problem with Zach, our 2 year old yorkie. I also have a problem with Oliver and Basil our 2 shih tzus. We have a shorkie who we had a problem with at first but now she's perfect. She will burst a kidney before she will go in the house. She was a little over 1 when she finally got the idea. The only problem is she wont go out in the rain so when it rains like it's been doing she sits and cries because she has to go. |
