Troy as a puppy started in an ex-pen. I got sentimental and lazy and started letting him sleep with me. He pooped under the bed!

I bought a crate but it was too big! He pooped in it all the time! I got lazy and sentimental again and stopped then let him just have puppy pads in the house. That didn't work either!

Got smart, bought a smaller crate! Got him on a food/potty schedule! I got consistent and voila, potty trained dog!
