I am going to suggest a few things: a) Please spend some time reading in the sick and emergency and the health forums here, to see most of the problems that the Yorkshire Terrier breed has. Then after doing this: take a really serious look at your "potential" breeding pair. 1) CT= Collapsing Trachea - Do you know if it is in their line? If so how prevalent is it? Do either of your two dogs have this condition? 2) LS = Liver Shunt - Without having preformed the BATS testing, which is a specific test on Liver Function, you have no idea if either of your two have healthy livers. This must be done prior to breeding, and should be done on any Yorkie so that you know what you are dealing with, and if she is pregnant right now, all pups from the litter should be tested at 16wks. Some forms of this disease require very expensive surgery, and some forms can't be cured only managed through diet/meds. Also as this is a recessive polygenetic condition, the fact that your two are clear of LS (if indeed they are) doesn't mean any pups borne from them will also be clear. 3) LP=Luxating Patella - again what has the vet evaluated their knees at? 0/0 0/1 1/1/ Grades of LP go from 0-4 with 0 being clear. The more severe forms of LP often require surgery; again an expensive and painful condition for any dog to have. These are what I refer to as the big 3. Some sources indicate that the combined prevalence throughout the Yorkie breed is about 30%. That means a one in three chance, especially knowing nothing about the lines you are breeding from, that one or more of these "pups" will suffer from one or more of these conditions. 4) PRA = Progressive Retinal Atrophy. All breeding dogs need to have this condition tested for; and by the way a general vet can not do this test. It must be tested by an opthamologist. This forum contains many good articles and information on the Yorkshire Terrier breed, as well you might go to www.ytca.org to see what the USofA National breed club has to say about health ,standard of the Yorkie breed etc. Finally Last but never Least, in my opinion temperament is also very key in making breeding decisions. A timid, shy, and nervous dog, is Not the right temperament for almost any breed to be bred. I wish you the best of luck with your two.

| I'm not saying that Yorkie breeding ISN'T important... But...WOW! I wish people were in this much of an uproar and concerned about humans who should and shouldn't breed. |

| I'm new to posting in this forum, but have been reading posts everday for over a month... Frankly, it's the best site I've ever come across and so very helpful with information (I have a yorkie and a maltese). I do agree that those poor little angels have an amazing life now compared to before -it is not fair to say otherwise. Why push rzrpretty away from such an informative/active/caring forum with abbrasive remarks... approach her in a more gentle informative manner. It is human nature to become defensive when you are unsure of your actions a gentle informative approach will go a long way AND will keep her here for future guidance.

Im a bit confused. If the OP has stated that IF she breeds these two that the puppys will be GIVEN to friends and family. How is she in it for the money? It seems to me that she will be spending alot of money. | |

| I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | People always say that there are going to give the dog away to friends and family, but if friends and family can't afford to buy a dog, they probably shouldn't have a dog, especially a breed that is known to have a high upkeep cost.

| There are tons of care and compassion on YT for the people who have unknowingly purchased Yorkies from disreputable breeders and end up with very sick little animals. Many of these people have spent thousands of dollars trying to save their beloved little pet only to have it die after months of expensive medical care. People care about these people and have great sympathy for them. We have much compassion for people who spend hundreds of dollars on that little Yorkie they have been wanting only to find a few months later that that little puppy isn't looking much like a Yorkie to them or has behavioral issues that cannot be solved. It is heartbreaking for a Yorkie owner to find out their pet has liver shunt and they cannot come up with the thousands of dollars needed for surgery and after care. People really care for and have compassion for these people. Yeah, some people get really worked up about someone breeding Yorkies that doesn't know or care about what they are doing. People felt bad for the OP at first until it became clear her major concern was that she wanted to a breeding pair and not a couple of pets. There are breeders on YT. Some have spent many years and dollars in order to better the breed and not exploit it. They invest everything they ever get from the sale of a puppy back into the business so they are able to show in public what they have been doing for the betterment of the Yorkshire Terrier. |

| I look at it differently. If she can spend $3900 on a pair, then she can probably afford to give the puppys to friends, which is what she stated was her intention. I would prefer to get to know the OP before forming an openion so final and complete. |

She paid $3900 with the intent of making money off of them. They are a financial investment to her. When she thought they couldn't be bred it was a "Bad situation." At the vet visit she is told they can make more puppies and everything is great again. She is in it for the money. Plain and simple. After all, no one pays $3900 with the expectations "to not have anything at all!" This really makes me sick.
