No I undstand your point. It just makes me a lttle irritated b/c to me, I think that dogs are priced as to what they need to be, sure they are expensive, but there are tons of Dogs that need good homes and instead someone is asking for a purebread dog for free or very cheap. I dont think that is right. I understand the fact of being in love with a certain breed as I was to Yorkies, but I wasnt going to expect one for cheaper. I just dont think that is right. I am like you though still making payments. It is just my opinion that if you cant affort it, move on to something that you can afford. That is all.

I think that this is a very controversial thread, but it is nice to see everyones opinions...so lets respect what everyone has to say!

These are not ignorant comments if you work in rescue and see how many people give up their Yorkie's because their lifestyles (career, marriage, children) changed so much from 18 to 28. Rescue's first priority is for the dog and not the people so we always err on the side of the dog. The last thing we want for this animal is to lose another home down the road. These little guys are very sensitive and it breaks your heart when these guys loose their 1st home and we certainly aren't going to put them through it again a second time.

I just wish more people would think about the dog first instead of themselves. The ones looking for a teacup, babyface, intact females for $300 send shivers up my back as I know the chances are very high that the dog or its pups will end up in rescue.

If the world was perfect we would not need that many rescue organizations that are out there for Yorkies. But on any given day there are close to 300 Yorkies that are in Yorkie only rescue and how many are in pounds we don't know. This not a Yorkie only problem but an out of control problem in the US. Just go to petfinder and see how many purebred dogs are in rescue or at animal control. Look at the statistics of how many animals are euthanized every year (in the millions).

Just my thoughts.

And then there's always the sometimes not even thought about "regular things". Like feeding mommie. She has to eat too, and if she doesn't get the right nutrition during pregnancy, you're in for a lot more problems. Then there's the feeding after the pups are born. A lot of people think that you don't have to worry about the pups cuz mom feeds them. Phooey!! Whatever mom eats, goes thorough her to the puppies. So if you feed her junk, the pups get junk. And there's the suppliments she needs to stay healthy while she's nursing. It runs into the hundreds to just feed the mom. Then, after the pups are weaned, you have to feed them in addition to the vet normal care, pee-pads, LAUNDRY, and a multitude of toilet paper and paper towels costs. I've never actually broke it down totally. Maybe I'll do that right after the two litters I currently have.

It doesn't bother me.... sometimes someone might be retiring a female or someone no longer can keep their yorkie... and price is not a issue... they are just looking for a good home for their pet. Everyone should be entitled to a YORKIE!!!

I got my Cosmo for $250 he isn't reg. but I dont care I just wanted him as a pet. He is great and I am glad I got him. I am a college student too and dont have a lot of money but I made sure before I bought him that I had a lot saved up for emergencies.

Priceless!! That's what the buyers should understand when they are getting a bargain price of $650-$750 for a lifetime of love and companionship from a Yorkie.

It doesn't irritate me to see people trying to get a bargain...I know that they aren't really dealing in "reality" if they've done their homework. However....the price you pay also depends greatly on the area of the country that you live -- sort of the same as buying a house.

My parents only paid $400 for my yorkie Lacey back in 1992. Yorkies were not quite as popular back then and things were cheaper. And my parents bought her at a pet store. We did know anything about puppy mills back then and the warning not to buy from a pet store. But, we got lucky with Lacey. She rarely got sick. She was just a normal, beautiful, healthy dog. Until she got kidney failure at the age of 13, she never really had to go to the vet other than her shots. She had recurrent ear infections, but that is common. We always took her to vet to get drops and she was better.

The only reason it is an "ignorant comment" is because those same comments were directed at me because of my current "life situation" and it really got me irritated. I spoil my dog to no ends and it irks me that someone who doesnt know me would start saying these things just because they hear i have a full time job or am in college ect.... there are situations where this is the case and the pups end up in rescues, but for someone to accuse people of it is what is irritating

oh, another issue: what if the person has a reason for wanting a yorkie so badly, not just because they are cute. My reason was because i am allergic to dogs, but not to toby ... people with allergies is a big one i think, true there are other breeds but the few that i looked into i think yorkies were the less expensive

Sorry if you thought those comments were directed to you because they were not. If you go back through my threads hopefully you will see that my comments were talking about rescue in general and why we make some of the decisions we do. I sometimes think Rescue gets a bad rap because of all the hoops we make people go through and I can understand this from the people side of the equation but in most cases we are trying to do what is right for the animal. Of course, there are always exceptions to the case.

It would break your heart if you saw some of the conditions the dogs are in when rescue gets them and you would get very angry and try to protect these little ones as much as you can. You would also get angry because you could not understand why didn't they take care of them and just threw them away. Not everyone makes a long term committment like you have.

The ads don't bother me, but this does. When people buy Yorkies, but can't afford to give the Yorkie proper vet care, put food on the table for their own children or have their utilities disconnected----just to say "I Have A Yorkie". Sorry, if I stepped on any toes.

Loook at my family and Lewie. He affords everything that is necessary and some extra things here and there, but he could, in no way, afford a thousand dollars for a dog. He searched through rescue sites for weeks but they all wanted at least 300 and all of the poor dogs needed hundreds-thousands in surgery. I came on here, and within 2 days we had found a 3 year old male who really needed a home. FREE.

I think people who come on here looking for dogs for cheap shouldn't be thought of as people who cannot afford to take care of that dog properly. Maybe they're just middle class people who love the breed and want to pay a little less so they can spend all that extra money on spoiling that lucky pup.

They come here hoping that one of our GREAT members may know of a dog that needs a home for a little cheaper price.

I know there are some people out there who don't research the breed and think we're all crazy for paying so much for our dogs... but not everyone should be stereotyped into this catagory.

Sorry for the rant...it's probably not even proper english because I was just typing away. But, I hope everyone understands where I'm coming from.

Thanks for a fabulous response...sometimes we need a little nudge to remind us that life is not always black and white...and that sometimes a prayer is answered even when the rest of the world says you haven't a chance in hell... I'm so happy your grandmother has a loving companion...

Yes, I get very irritated! It costs a lot for medical bills.. and if you want a happy, healthy pet then you should be willing to pay that much. I'm only 21, just got married.. and my husband is the only one who works right now, so we don't have much money.. but had our hearts set on a yorkie. Did we complain about the price (well he did a little), but we saved until we could afford one. I also get very irritated with family and friends who always say "I would never pay that much for a dog" Well, its not just something you buy and then discard. If you're willing to pay that much, it is yours for years and years.
