Do you get irritated with all the ads wanting free or really cheap yorkies?

I keep seeing tons of ads for people wanting free or cheap yorkies under $300! Unless it is a close family friend or relative, nobody is just going to give their baby up for free or for that cheap. If it has to be a yorkie, then they need to go to the rescue yorkies. It will not be a puppy though and may have special needs. But, they will be saving a life. They don't realize how much it costs for the yorkie parents and for the medical care it needs during its pregnancy. And the shots the puppies will need before they can go home. The cost can reach thousands of dollars. Plus, you want to make sure your baby is going to a good home and not just off the street. I know I am not one of these people that can afford $1000 for a puppy either. But, I am not asking or expecting someone to give me one for free or under $300 either. I will try to put my money aside little by little if I have to. Because not everybody deserves a dog. I cannot stand people that purchase a dog, then lose interest. And then the dog gets neglected or mistreated. Any dog is a commitment of anywhere from 10 to possibly 15 years or maybe more.

No I dont get irritated. I am always happy to hear someone who cant afford alot of the prices finds a breeder selling them for a price they can afford. I think yorkies are an expensive breed. There are other small breeds and their price runs in that $300-400 range. I paid 600 for a male and 1200 for a female and that was the going rate and Im in Indiana. Other states are much higher even. I do agree with you though that people who are looking for a lower price should look at the rescues.

Can I just say, for the most part, "Amen". I know that way before I actually researched breeding....which honestly wasn't that long ago, I thought it was all "free" money because "the mother dog does all the work". Now I know that for "a fact" that is not true. I am way more stressed out emotionally, not to mention finacially, than the Mother dog (Tiah in this case) is. However.....she can accomplish more in one day with a litter than I ever can. Any good healthy pup starts with lots of TLC and good vet care with its mother way before it is ever even conceived. Hope I am not running on and on......

I agree. There are a lot of dogs that needs rescued.

Does it irritate me to see cheap ads? No, it doesn't. They're the breeders and they can charge whatever they want to. I cannot charge $300 and come anywhere close to breaking even.

What does irritate me is when people call and ask me to come down in price. My answer is always no. There is too much time and money that goes into raising a litter properly. If they want a cheap yorkie, I tell them to go elsewhere.

cajungal 11-14-2005 04:30 PM

I was only asking because I know a lot do get upset. Because I myself, did research on breeding. I know how much money it costs. I know some good breeders that don't just do it for the money. There are some that you get priced around $650, but it is a rare find. The groomer that used to groom Lacey is going to be selling her pups for $650. It all depends on the person. If I was a breeder, I would make sure that my babies were going to a really good home. I would probably ask for references. I could not live with myself if I sold a yorkie to someone who did not properly take care of him or her. Because if they can't afford to pay $600 or more for a puppy, then how are they going to afford vet care? Shots alone can get expensive and what if the dog gets sick? Then, that is more money for vet care. When Lacey got kidney failure, she had to have fluid shots 3 times a week. That was the only way to prolong her life. And that got expensive at $16 a shot, 3 times a week!

Though, on the other hand....there was a time when I had no extra money for a dog. I thought the prices out there were people just trying to make money off of rich people. I never, in my life, thought I'd pay $1,000 for a dog that couldn't help clean the house! (P.S. I still think it would be helpful if all of that energy could go toward something positive :D ). Anyway, I can see both sides. God sure knew what he was doing when he made puppies and kids so darned cute :p

I hear you... :yeahthat:
I have some ads out there for my pups and people are actually telling me;
How much they will pay and how they will pay me or why can't I just give them one.....
Uhhmmmm...
My Lily had a C-Section 900.++ dollars.
That doesn't include other visits, she had complications and the shots for the pups.
Your absolutely right, there are people that just don't know and just don't care.
I do though have a Contract with all my pups, I make sure they care. :p

Here where I live, you can find males for $650. That doesn't mean you're getting a yucky dog, either. That's why if that's what the breeder wants to charge, then great for the potential buyer. Just check out the breeder really well.

Best of luck to you.

My concern is that if they cannot afford more than 300.00 for a yorkie how are they going to take care of the many vet bills, grooming etc. They are not a cheap breed and any dog can run up high vet bills in a very quick time. I think you have to look at it as a long term investment.

txshopper73 11-14-2005 04:34 PM

I do not do this...mine go to the vet, but there are a lot of breeders out there that do their own shots/wormings and tail docking. This cuts out a lot on the costs.

troubletb 11-14-2005 04:34 PM

I guess people think it doesn't cost much for a breeder to produce a puppy. It does get me upset, but then again people don't know. This is what it cost me for my first litter.
$80. Exam on Bell
$600-stud fee
$90 xrays
$75 post natal check up and tails dock and declaws removed
$120 1st shots
$30 AKC papers
$120 2nd shots
ANd all the time lost at work, and many hours of lost sleep too!

That is for three puppies, 1 I kept for myself.
There isn't really a profit.
I think if people break it down then they would realize cheap or free it impossible
:p

EXACTLY!!!

What irritates me most is when people inquire and the first thing out of hteir mouth is 'how much?'..That should not be the most important factor. Health and care shoudl be the first questions then price should be discussed. I have to admit I do NOT reply to emails that ask 'how much?' :thumbdown . If someone does say they have a budget I ALWAYS refer to rescue organizations.

Now my prices are on the higher end but I can account for my expenses. I am still trying to break even. I bought some pupppies that ended up with health defects. I paid for a sound breeding quality yorkie that I ended up spaying and placing for less than $1000 including spay..add to that all these expenses and I'm still in the RED

I own 12 so off the bat take the routine vet care you pay for one yorkie (dentals, shots, food, toys, vitamins, pee pads, grooming supplies, flea prevention, heartworm prevention and any other unexpect vet bills that may come up) per year and multiply that by 12 and that's what I pay; mabye a little more because my vet specializes in canine reproduction. Then add to that the xtras I do because I want so badly to make sure that i don't breed one with hereditary defect that can take away from the quality of life or be life threatening. I have all my Yorkies BA tested, my females have vaginal swabs and progestrone tests done prior to matitng to make sure I breed them at peak. I dont' just breed them for days and hope they take. Once bred, I have my female ultra sounded and then xrayed a copule days before due date. Because I work full have my moms-to-be stay with a mid-wife that my clinic has. She has a set up at her home to keep expecting moms on labor watch for 24 hrs round the clock. I send my mom's there 2 days before they are due so taht they can be monitored and watched by someone experience who can handle any situation in my absense. That alone costs me $80 a day. Then a c-section if there was a problem. Once the puppies are here I pay to have tails and dews done, all shots are done by my vet they have at least 2 sets before leaving. Stools are checked, they are on flea prevention, and will have a full blood panel to clear them of LS any other health problems that can be seen in the blood. I aslo alter my puppies before placing them now. I also have a VERY nice pupppy kit I send home. I offer a full guarantee for 1 yr for hereditary defects but lifetime support, you can call me any time. My Yorkies range from $1200-$2500 females are more expensive becuase the spay is done by Laparscopy which costs twice as much as the traditional spay. If i have a tiny puppy I do charge more becuse I have to keep them longer which is more money I have to pay. the money i make covers expenses for my Yorkies. I COULD charge more but that means I would have a smaller selection of homes and I wouldnt be able to be as picky. I try to be fair but I need to recoup my expenses too.

Now this is my choice, this does not mean breeders that don't do things the same as me are not reputable.

Hugs,
Irene and the million $ gang

I don't get irritated with ads, I don't have the time for that. I do get irritated by people who think this is a get rich quick scheme and I am making a fortune on puppies. They simply have no concept of the amount of money that is spent in routine vet/care/testing and then the unexpected expenses that sometimes pop up. A pup that I just placed for $1,000.00 to a pet home cost me over $3,000.00 before she left here sound and well. The initial investment for good quality breeding dogs is another extraordinary expense. I just bought out my ex's interest in our dogs/all mine now...that was $17,000.00. Add that to my half already paid and you're up past $30K. How many years do ya think it might take to get out of the red? Don't forget to tally up incidental expenses like chewies and ex-pens and bedding. Cleaning supplies, pee-pads, wormers, flea/tick control...the list goes on and on. Then there are the expenses involved with going to shows to make sure you're on the right track with your breeding program. Oh, and the little dog heaven deck/run in my yard wasn't free. I could probably cut expenses by not providing my dogs with best of everything that I can manage, but that's not a consideration. Hey, I DO save money by doing dewclaws and tails myself, but the reason I do it is not to save, I just don't like to stress mom and newborn pups with a trip to the vet.
What is the going wage rate for sleepless nights? LOL!
I want to snort out loud when I hear about a breeder telling someone they registered their dogs with an alternate registry to save the expense of the AKC. Ridiculous! That is chump change in the grand scheme of things.
All just an example of ...you get what you pay for.
