| New Pup but Is this Common or Is he NUTS!?! Hello Everyone, Glad I stuck around and thank you for the pouring over of support and advice with my handsome gent Niko! He is a bright ray of sunshine in our lives. Quick Update: (Didn't mention this earlier because of all the controversy surrounding his breeder, not going to go there but those who have followed will now have a better understanding of what I mean.) Niko is doing well, now. At his first vet appointment (morning after I got him), I mentioned to the vet that he had blood after he pooed. (Loose Stool & it was the first time he did poo.) Scared me half to death. I thought maybe he was stressed from the relocation etc. Well, the vet said he did not have any worms, parasites, etc. But instead, he had bacteria present that most likely came from the condition at the breeder's place. He prescribed Albon (I believe that's the name) and some i/d formula wet dog food to help with his appetite and most importantly his tummy/intestinal upset. I was to mix it with the food she sent. He also gave him a shot of cortisone and ibuprofen (for pain and inflammation). A couple hours later he was wagging his numb and just as frisky as ever. THANK GOD! I still have to give him his Albon, which he LOVES, every 12 hrs. His stool has began hardening but isn't quite there yet but it's only been 3 days and he does have some "new food" with his usual food. (Still, haven't switched him to the Wellness I want to feed, just waiting for poo to harden and medicine to finish.) Anywho, he has an appointment on Friday and will receive his next set of vaccines. Current Question: I went to a pet store today to buy him a smaller collar and bells. (Other collar too big.) Well, when I got in there he started to cry and whine a bit. So I thought maybe he was scared or I was holding him wrong. Well, then he just yelped. The same yelp that happens if a dog is in pain or really frightened. So I freaked and put him on the ground...he then went right up to a nearby lady and wagged his tail. Later I brought him out to a dog free field to burn some energy and as the people would walk by he would cry and whine, ALOT! Not to mention he runs up to them and follows them. (He was only off leash for playtime and the place isn't a place for dogs b/c he hasn't had all his vaccs and I wanted to make sure he wasn't subjected to the risk.) Anyway, has anyone had this happen before? I know it's not a huge deal but I just want to know why the crying and what to do? I know they go through a "really friendly" stage...but is this his version of it. My other question is what vaccine schedule did/do you use? And did your pup go through separation anxiety? If so, for how long? Sorry for all the questions and the not-so short update, but thank you in advance for all your answers. Blessings Your Way, Niko's Proud Mommy

| New Pup but Is this Common or Is He Nuts? HI, Congrats on the puppy. I am glad your vet put him on Albon. I start any puppy that I sell on Albon for 3 days before they leave and then the new parents continue the puppy on it for 4 more days so that doesn't happen. All Dog/puppies have coccidosis in there bowel and any stress can activate it. So the transition to the new home can activate it. The other problem I feel about his crying when he see other people is he/she is just a really friendly puppy and he/she will outgrow it. The separation anxiety can be a problem unless you handle it correctly. Make sure anytime you leave the puppy you tell him in a few word be right back or going to work and give him something with your scent one it to the puppy. At first if you can leave for a short time and come back of course say mommy back or what ever you say to greet him/her. Then try it and leave a little longer ect. The little puppy has just been taken from the only home it knew. It sounds like the puppy hasn't been with you a long time so just be patient and work with him/her. Some puppies have a harder time than others. When I sell my puppies I always in the puppy pak that goes with them put in a blanket that has there mothers scent on it. That helps with the separation when they lay down they smell there mother. Hope this helps and good luck with you special little baby. Yorkies give back more love than we could ever try to give. |

| I don't have an answer to your question. BUT, why may I ask are you taking him out in public and a field for him to run around in? He shouldn't be out until all of his puppy shot's have been given. Since he is also on medication for a bacterial infection this makes it even more so that he shouldn't be out. Also I noticed you said you put him on the floor at the Pet Store, there are all kinds of germs on that floor and no telling what there may be, not every one vacinates their dog's and no telling what other dog's walking around on that floor are bringing in. I'm glad he is doing so much better, and he is cute little guy.

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | I agree with TxVicki. Has the pup had all of his shots? you are suposed to wait atleast a week after their last lot of shots before you take them out for a walk. That and the fact he is on meds means there is no way this pup should be going out for walks or put on the ground in public places (or anywhere near another dog). Please answer these questions EDIT: Just read that the dog hasnt had all of his shots. He shouldn't be on the ground in a public place AT ALL, even if it is an area that dogs dont usually go in. You have no idea what nasties people have trampled in on their shoes. Please dont do this again! And to answer your Q about seperation anxiety then yes they do have this for a little while. Poppy has it for a few weeks before she realised I was always coming back when I left the room. The vanccine schedule I used for Poppy will be different to yours because it is my understanding that dogs in the US have more shots then here in the UK (because we dont have the rabies shot). Poppy had her first shot at 8 weeks then her second at 10 weeks, she went for her first walk 2 weeks later.

| Hello I have to agree with the other posters to not bring sweet Niko to the pet store or even let him hang out on grass that other dogs use to poop and pee on including yards near you. When I first got Buster he had coccidia and giardia. He liked the flavor of Albon but not his other medications. It really is safer to not put them down in public places because they can get stuff on their paws and then lick it off or track it in. Make sure to keep him away from other dog poop or pee which by the way the are fascinated in. They want to check out the peemail and roll in it if they can! But poop is where Parvo is and that is really scary! Buster was always so excited to meet new people a little too excited. He would sometimes overwhelm dogs when he first met them but that is a puppy! He has learned better dog manners but still is excited to meet new friends. I have Buster on Jarrow Petdophilus to help with his upset tummy to keep his digestive system regular. Pet Dophilus

| I really have no clue why he is acting so "weird"!! Maybe he just really wants to tell eeveryone hi!!! My Bevo never really had seperation anxiety terribly. Not the "clinical" version anyways. He always and still is very excited for my returning home. But, I know lots of dogs have to actually take medication for anxiety. I think mine just misses me!! Im so glad Niko made it home safely!! He is a cutie!!!

| I agree... no outings till vaccines are done and two weeks after the final vaccine. Here is Dr Dodds Vaccine Protocol: DR. JEAN DODDS' CANINE VACCINATION PROTOCOL ? 2010 Maybe your pup thinks he sees his old owners (breeder) and is trying to find them... my older rescue/adoptees did this for a while. She knew we weren't her 'people' so anyone else was a possibility....

| I agree with the other posters about taking your new baby in pet stores and outside at this time sooo many things that they can pick up...I also wouldn't change his food at this time...changing food is really hard on a dog especially a pups tummy, that alone will give them diarrhea I would continue to feed what the breeder was feeding until he is atleast 6 mos old or older....the less you change right now the better. Use a harness not a collar...Yorkies have very sensitive tracheas...and a collar could cause collapse trachea. The vaccine schedule here in Florida is...8 weeks 12 weeks and rabies given at 16 weeks...and my Vet recommends the Lepto Vaccines...I refused it last year, didn't think Bella was at risk since I have a fenced in yard but I did some research on it and reconsider my decision. I have seen coyotes, raccoons, wild hogs and rats in my neighborhood...and I live in the city...so Both my babies go tomorrow to get the Lepto vaccines. And I think the crying is just his unsureness and nervousness of his new surroundings. Good luck with your new baby Niko

| Oh, it sounds like Niko might just be overwhelmed with all of the things that have happened to him in the last few days and the loss of his canine family. Niko is a young baby and probably really uncertain of his new world right now. Usually when I get a new baby I like to give him plenty of time to adjust at home with just the immediate family and no visitors or outings other than to the vet. Once the vaccination period is done, I introduce him socially slowly bit-by-bit, gradually working up to the intensity of a pet store or gatherings of many people when he's a bit more mature. Training is different - I start potty and obedience training sessions early. Keeps them busy and gives their little minds some work to do. My Tibbe will yelp out as your Niko did sometimes when I am handling him, but only when he is very uncertain of something and I touch him "wrong"; or if we are playing and he thinks he is getting away from me and I surprise him by grabbing him at the last moment. At first it scared me badly but a quick examination proved no problems and he was acting fine again. Soon in the day-to-day living with him, I found out this is his protest in moments of heightened stress when he did not expect to be moved or touched in a certain way.

| A bit rude... But they're trying to tell you that he shouldn't be outside anywhere because there's always risks even if you think the area is safe, secluded, etc. Good luck with Niko!

| Feeling Guilty... The collar is for identification and location purposes only and right now he is using a puppia harness (buddy belt harness will come when he has stopped growing). All this information I received from people here. (previous threads) The bell is something I have picked up on myself. I place a small bell that you can buy for a cat, they also have some for small dogs. But I put this on his collar so as we are walking around the house he doesn't get stepped on. It also helps to alert us when he may have quickly ran off to go potty somewhere and then we are able to catch him before he commits the crime. My vet told me it would be fine to take him to a place that is free from animals, he suggested the precautions and that it is up to my discretion, but to be EXTREMELY CAREFUL, which I thought I was. The people that I mentioned that walk by did so to enter into the place of business. He was not on the sidewalk. In fact no one cuts through the grass at all...its just really professional and clean besides the spare leaves every so often. I do not let people touch all over him. I have done research on the passing of diseases and etc. All the research I have done didn't mention a major risk to having him in an animal free zone. Of course I know no boarding (he will go everywhere with me anyway), grooming, dog parks, obedience class, etc. until all of his vaccs are complete. I am not trying to harm him, just not stifle him so to speak. I wouldn't take him to any place that there were animals. And the yelp he did in the store was a cry of pain, not excitement. So it frightened me. I do have wipes and I cleaned his paws as soon I bought the collar and went back to the car. Believe me I do feel bad, but in the circumstance i know that I would probably do the same thing because the yelp was just that bad. (It was also the first time I had heard him make that noise period.) But to be on the safe side, I will do as many of you suggest and just not take him out until completed vaccs. Thank you for all of the advice. Humble New Yorkie Mom
