Oh, it sounds like Niko might just be overwhelmed with all of the things that have happened to him in the last few days and the loss of his canine family. Niko is a young baby and probably really uncertain of his new world right now. Usually when I get a new baby I like to give him plenty of time to adjust at home with just the immediate family and no visitors or outings other than to the vet. Once the vaccination period is done, I introduce him socially slowly bit-by-bit, gradually working up to the intensity of a pet store or gatherings of many people when he's a bit more mature. Training is different - I start potty and obedience training sessions early. Keeps them busy and gives their little minds some work to do.
My Tibbe will yelp out as your Niko did sometimes when I am handling him, but only when he is very uncertain of something and I touch him "wrong"; or if we are playing and he thinks he is getting away from me and I surprise him by grabbing him at the last moment. At first it scared me badly but a quick examination proved no problems and he was acting fine again. Soon in the day-to-day living with him, I found out this is his protest in moments of heightened stress when he did not expect to be moved or touched in a certain way.
