New Pup but Is this Common or Is he NUTS!?!

I have done research on the passing of diseases and etc. All the research I have done didn't mention a major risk to having him in an animal free zone. Of course I know no boarding (he will go everywhere with me anyway), grooming, dog parks, obedience class, etc. until all of his vaccs are complete. I am not trying to harm him, just not stifle him so to speak. I wouldn't take him to any place that there were animals. And the yelp he did in the store was a cry of pain, not excitement. So it frightened me. I do have wipes and I cleaned his paws as soon I bought the collar and went back to the car. Believe me I do feel bad, but in the circumstance i know that I would probably do the same thing because the yelp was just that bad. (It was also the first time I had heard him make that noise period.) But to be on the safe side, I will do as many of you suggest and just not take him out until completed vaccs.

No need to feel guility at all. We all know your not trying to harm him. It's all a learning process.
While the field may have been an animal free zone, birds can land in the field.
Having the wipes was such a good idea.

I am pretty young myself. In my early 20's. But there is no need to apologize. Just a simple misunderstanding. We all live in different places and cities and the lingo can vary so greatly over short distances it's really amazing . But thank you so much for the advice. I never considered birds as part of the equation. Simple really but not so much for me. Lol.
Thank you for the advice and I will keep him inside until at least 18 weeks. The dual potty training will have to cease for a little while. I am using the mini pee wee dog potty system which is much like the little rascal but much more appealing and easier to replace. He has been doing really good with it. And there isn't a stinch after use so its a win win for us.

Thank you once again for all your help and advice. We go to vet Friday for his next set of vaccines and my research has showed me that I just have to come prepared to let the doc know what he needs and doesn't.

Ahh Baby Nikko!!!

I can totally see where you're coming from with just putting him on the ground because it was just human response. And I know for a fact that you're not letting him run all around Pet Smart greeting all kinds of animals and picking up goodness knows what.

What I'm thinking is, especially since Nikko is a little bit younger, that (like a two year old) is simply pressing your buttons. If I remember correctly, you got Nikko younger then 12 weeks right? Well, right now I think he's testing the boundaries. I'm sure when he was with the breeders he had free reign, and now that he saw other people, and other pets he wanted to get down and investigate and you (in his eyes "big bad mommy) were preventing him.

Gizmo does this sometimes when he sees other dogs and I don't put him down to let him play with them.

There are a few things you can do to help Niko out.
Have you looked into those plush animals with a heating pad and a heart beat? He's younger than desired (sorry, but it's going to play a huge role in his development and how you should "raise" him) which means he'll need more reassurance and extra help from his new mom (you) that he's safe, protected, and part of a pack. The plush can help simulate mom and litter mates in his new home.

Also, make a special place just for him in case you already haven't. An expen worked so well when I got my yorkie. Granted he was much, MUCH, older than your little one when I got my pup, but I think all dogs crave that safe place that is all theirs. It will be his safe place, and it will help with potty training.
