I totally know that sound! My Schnorkie (Yorkie/schnauzer) tries to do it too and he makes what we call the Wookie sound...(imagine the Star Wars, Chewbacka-spelling?) it's so hilarious if I ever catch it on video it's going on here...never heard anything like it in my life.

So glad other people have barking cats too LOL!

And Yorkies were used to keep the rat population down in the woolen mills. It is still in their genes.
Lil Bit came in the house one day with two field mice in her mouth. I was almost hysterical - blood dripping from the mice! And of course she had to jump on the bed with them. She finally dropped them at Bruce's feet and looked at him as if to say "See, aren't I a good girl". Of course he had to praise her.
We have never trained any of our furbabies to go after mice, but it is in their genes. (I have had the dachshunds, when we had them, bring a squirrel into the house - I caught one of the dachsies and Lil Bit playing tug of war with it!!!)
Dachsunds were bred for badger hunting.

I'm a bit shocked by what I've been reading. I think it's pretty sad, how much we pamper our little yorkies with dresses, bows, strollers, etc. but when another species is killed by a yorkie, people here are sounding pretty callous. Up until 10 years ago, I raised Bengal cats, only stopping when my daughter came into our lives. Cats are gentle, loving beings. Yes, they kill birds and mice, etc. but I've rarely met a cat that will attack a person; can't say that about dogs. So are people saying that if one of our yorkies gets out of our homes and is killed by a big dog, then it's tough luck for the owner because the dog had no right to be outside of their home. I agree the original OP should be free to let her dog in her own backyard but try to have a bit of sympathy for this poor cat. I have never let my Bengals outside as I know there are many dangers outside, but let's have a bit of equality in respect for a precious being.

Too add to that, rats can be different sizes in different parts of the world from pretty small to pretty darn big and a rat or a squirrel can put up a fight every bit as much a cat can. Have you ever seen the teeth on a pack rat? WOWZWER! These Terriers may be small but they can also be mighty. When they want to turn it on, they can! I have always said cats have the advantage only if they can get up and out of reach or get away.

Oh, if Tibbe somehow got killed by another animal of any kind because he was in that pet's yard, I would feel totally distraut and could never get over it, feel totally guilty and fully responsible! I could not hold any large or small animal responsible for its protective or prey instincts in protecting its own home. As a pet owner, I have no expectation my pet has any rights should it venture into dangerous territory. If my Tibbe ran out in the street and got hit by a car or were attacked by another animal anywhere off our own property, it would be my sole responsibility for not managing to keep him home and safe. That is why I work hard to try to get pet owners to keep their own pets at home and out of danger as it is so sad to see a pet die needlessly.

It seems like to me if he had killed the cat he would have had a scratch or 2 on him. Did you happen to notice if the cat had been declawed? I'm so sorry that had to happen to you, I know I would be devastated. I just hate to see any animal killed and yet I know our babies are little ratters. ugh!!! I have seen Kayla pick up a stuff toy and shake it until it was unbelievable how she did that. I thought when her and Dudley were playing tug a war she was going to break his little neck. They are really strong little buggers. We have seen just lately a feral cat roaming around and my dh said he had never seen a cat that big. He came home from work the other nite and it was laying on our front porch. Hope he doesn't decide to go in the backyard. I don't want him to hurt or blind one of my babies. Scares me to death. Dh said this cat was alot bigger than Kayla. As bad as it had to be, I don't think you owe your neighbor any money. I think here in Dallas there is also a law about keeping your cats up too.

Bengals are very dangerous in the same way wolf-dogs are huh?-...people assume they are a cat/dog and treat them as such ignoring the wild animal part that is inbred in them...We were just talking about that...I'd love get a Wolf but I have dogs and kids and the chase instinct and response to any type of "weakness" will most likely result in a dangerous incident...just not worth the risk to me, or in creating an irresponsible unfair situation to all here.

I think the point was if a Yorkie gets into the yard of another big dog...its tough luck Yorkie...stinks though one would think peopel would appropriately train their animals...but hey dog are territorial...your own yard is your own yard...raccoons adn skunks come in mine, of course they are a threat to my dogs so I don't let them get "territorial"

I had a Russian Dwarf Hamster when I first got Scoobers...oh boy that was fun he tried so hard to get on the counter where the cage was! Thankfully he was terrified of the hamster in the ball so it worked out..well the hamster kicked it a couple months after having Scoobers, but I'd not get any other rodent now that we have terriers...hm oh and chickens...Scoobers will escape, break a leash, and runs blocks away to get to the neighbor who has chicken in the back yard...

I'm a little taken back people said "was the Yorkie hurt" but no concerned questions about the cat at first...I mean I was concerned about that too as anyone would be in a dog cat, any type of animal fight...but uh again...was any attempt made to ensure the cat was dead at the time it was just dumped in the trash, finding an owner-how do you know it's feral? I'm not a cat person, still car about them, and fed the feral ones before...

Of course I'm also the genius who mentioned to the animal control officer," I'm really concerned about the feral cats around the neighborhood someone is cutting the tip off one ear on almost all of them..." <- yeah, that's the look I got too.

No offense OP I see you answered some of that...but anywho I was deeply concerned about those points also...

Mine kills on a daily basis. Every night when my husband takes off his socks! My husband thinks it is funny to watch. I am yelling at him to drop it b/c it is disgusting. My husband loves it so much he always makes sure to drop them in Monkey's eye sight! What is that show???? "It's me or the dog"? I vote for the dog!

Out of our home and trespassing on another's property? Yes

I agree with yorkietalkjilly, if my pet was killed because she was in another pet's yard, I would feel fully responsible. My pet has no right to be there.

Yorkies are little hunters
There is no doubt in my mind that my two would kill any bird or squirrel they could sink their teeth into
.... If they could catch them
As far as cats
They'd like to but they are a bit too small to scare any cats
The cats just look at them when they are barking and straining at the leash at them
I know ww like to think of our pets as nice cuddly little lap dogs
But they are bred predators
An d the instinct to kill is in them if they get a chance to act on it

While I would never actually go out and buy mice for Jackson to kill (I know Steve was joking anyways), it wouldn't really bother me if Jackson killed a mouse... it's not something you have to train them to do, it's instinct. It's in their nature and what they were bred for. Back before dogs were simply companions, they were all bred for a job..... Border Collies to herd sheep, Rottweilers to pull carts and be guard dogs, lots of little terriers were ratters! It's still in their genetic makeup to do so. Doesn't mean they ALL will, but alot might. Lots encourage it, ever seen lure coursing? A sport where the dogs chase a real rat (though they save the rat)... it's an interesting thing to watch. Or Earth Dog. These are all sports to encourage their natural instinct. People who have pet snakes buy mice to feed their snakes... I find it gross but it's what they are MEANT to eat... it's just the natural food chain, it happens.
