Lil Bit came in the house one day with two field mice in her mouth. I was almost hysterical - blood dripping from the mice! And of course she had to jump on the bed with them. She finally dropped them at Bruce's feet and looked at him as if to say "See, aren't I a good girl". Of course he had to praise her.
We have never trained any of our furbabies to go after mice, but it is in their genes. (I have had the dachshunds, when we had them, bring a squirrel into the house - I caught one of the dachsies and Lil Bit playing tug of war with it!!!)
Dachsunds were bred for badger hunting. |
Too add to that, rats can be different sizes in different parts of the world from pretty small to pretty darn big and a rat or a squirrel can put up a fight every bit as much a cat can. Have you ever seen the teeth on a pack rat? WOWZWER! These Terriers may be small but they can also be mighty. When they want to turn it on, they can! I have always said cats have the advantage
only if they can get up and out of reach or get away.
