Are you planning on breeding her? I just wanted you to know that the curl will be almost impossible to ever get rid of. You've said you're trying to improve your lines, and I didn't know if you knew that.

Thats not always true, if she breeds with a hard silk, she has a chance of getting hard silk with the puppies, JMO, but what different does it matter if she breeds her or not, she isn't standard to most and thats a bigger fault than coat. So why not let her ask a question to those that breed parti's and know about the coats. Cause I believe a couple that posted wouldn't touch a parti with a 10ft. pole, so why would you want to know. JMO

Supposedly straight hair is dominant to curly hair ... so theoretically if a pup receives a straight gene and a curly gene, the hair will be straight.

The R (curl) Locus[note 1]

The alleles at the R locus (the keratin-71 gene or KRT71) determine whether an animal's coat is straight or curly.[5] There are two known alleles that occur at the R locus:

R = Straight
r = Curly

R is dominant to r

Both my Bonnie and Roger have a little wave at the hindquarters. They consistently produce straight silk coats in the pups. I never looked into the genetics of it but have seen it for myself.

The curly hair is dominant so that means only one dominate gene has to be in present before it shows up on a pup. A fault is a fault to me, I don't think you should ever breed for them, but I'm assuming she isn't breeding for curly hair. If this were a standard color yorkie, I can assure you those breeders would attempt to educate her on curly coats, and one more thing Peanut, I have never used the "rolling eyes" smilie to you. I think if someone sold her that dog as a breeding dog, perhaps, she was taken advantage of.

Maybe she intends to breed the dog to a silky coated parti in order to improve the texture, just like other breeders will breed a soft coated black and tan to a silky coated, washed out blue and tan to improve the steel blue coloring? You know, breeding outside of the standard in order to produce the standard? Just a guess
I don't think that will work I have always heard not to breed the wavy haired dogs. Do you have any examples of breeding a wavy to a straight silk where none of the pups or grandpups showed the wavy hair? I'm thinking "no." I would not breed a wavy haired dog to a nice straight silk -- why would I want to ruin my nice straight silk? That is the epitomie of coat! I think she is sort of showing us her example that it does follow the line (from dad to daughter here). Tell you the truth, I don't have any washed out blue & tan dogs, so I haven't ever tried to bring color into a line as you describe either.

Here's some actual genetics on curly/wavy/straight hair.
If the male dog she is talking about has very wavy hair it may be actually curly hair. A curly (CC) & straight (SS) will produce all wavy (CS) hair pups. If it is just a wavy hair (CS) then if it is paired with a straight-haired dog (SS) -- you can have CS and SS -- wavy & straight haired pups. In no situation do you wind up with all straight haired pups. I think this is why it is always (that I know of anyway) recommended NOT to breed Yorkies with wavy or curly hair. (Simplified version)

Everything I've ever read about this says that curly hair is dominant.

I wasn't putting the rolling eyes to you direct Nancy, I posted yours to say yes you can breed it out, I don't have any yorkies with curly hair, but I do have a biewer that has some curl, and have bred her to a hard silk male and all the pups are hard silk. I have been around long enough to see threads turn out not to nice when parti's or biewers are mention. The question was about color anyway, not textured of coat, but thats jmo.

If you want an answer to your question then you need to go ask some of the YTCA show breeders.
I sure they can explain why they use straight irons to knock out the curl and waves before showing dogs to get that straight shiney look.
Also you might ask them why they breed those dogs with faults....

This links states that straight is dominant to curly in dogs ...

Well I know from personal experience one of the big reasons flat irons are used for show grooming is to eliminate creases from wraps.

I'm not an exhibitor, but my understanding for the use of flat irons is to flatten out the waves/kinks caused by wrapping, and to lock in shine.

ETA: I have stick straight hair, but still use a flat iron to make it look a little more perfect.

R Locus

Straight - R
Curly - r

Straight is dominant to curly

all pups would be Rr = straight hair since straight (R) is dominant

Now if the stud was Rr (straight hair but carries for curly)
half the litter would be curly and half would be straight

Okay, sorry I misunderstood the smilie. This picture look like more than a little curl to me.
