| Adding 2nd Yorkie with baby on the way? Are we nuts? So my husband and I have a year old Yorkie boy and our first skin baby on the way in about 3 months! We've tossed around the idea of getting our first Yorkie a friend but now we're getting pretty serious about the idea. We've been told that Yorkies can get jealous and upset at a new baby and have had people recommend we get him a dog companion. Our boy loves other dogs and we think he'd do great with a second dog in the house . . . We just wonder if we're nuts adding a puppy when we'll have a newborn in a few short months. Our families tell us we're crazy to add another pup but on the other hand we're kinda worried about our first boy's reaction to the baby. He is our first Yorkie, so we're hoping that some of you who are more experienced with the breed might have some good insight. TIA! |

| I think I would wait off... It's not always easy adding a second yorkie because there is an adjustment period, which varies from yorkies to yorkies. My Carmel wasn't fond of Emma and it took at least a month for him to finally accept her. There are also many other YT members that struggle when first adding another yorkie. Additionally, I'm afraid that it might be too much change for your yorkie at one time (new yorkie and a baby). It will also take A LOT of work (puppy training) from you and your husband...and it might be too much because you will also have a newborn...I think I would hold off on getting another yorkie until things are more stable. That's just my honest opinion and I'm sure other YT members will give more great advices. Whichever decision you do end up making, I wish you best of luck!! Btw, congrats on your new baby!! How exciting!!

| I agree, you are going to want to be able to make your current furbaby feel safe and secure as you add the new skinbaby to the family. A newborn is so much work and so is a puppy. I'd wait. That way you can give yourselves time to adjust to your new baby and then take on another HUGE responsibility. You deserve time to rest and relax and adding two new family members would be like having twins. |

| Wow; that's a toughie. On the one hand; you have three months to get everyone adjusted if you got a new puppy NOW. But you would almost have to do it immediately before the new baby arrives. Once your newborn is here; it's going to be hard to train a puppy! You simply will not have the time. So I say now, right now, or wait until after your baby is born; everyone is on a good sleep schedule, etc. Babies are a LOT of work and will take the majority of your time, by necessity. Good Luck!

| I agree with the others that say you should consider waiting. It will give you time and a chance to get your Yorkie boy used to your new baby, because your new baby is going to take a lot of your time, then trying to train a new puppy at the same time might put a lot of undue pressure on you and your yorkie boy will sense that. If it were me, I would wait until the baby is a few months old at least and then re-assess whether adding another Yorkie at that time is a good idea or not. Only you will know when the time comes

| Thank you all for your responses! Basically all of you have summed up what's running through my head. We realize that it could be VERY difficult having a newborn and a puppy still in training. One of the reasons we were even considering doing it now is we were told that we're best off adding a second dog before our first gets any older (he's just a year now). The second reason is we'd still have about 3 months to get the puppy trained (although I've learned with Yorkies that's not as long as it sounds ). I think we're leaning towards waiting now. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I just can't imagine adding a second pup right now. You are already concerned about how 1 pup will react to the baby- what about how two would react? I would lean towards waiting, too. Puppies need all your time and attention for a long time, and that is something that is definitely going to be in short supply once the skin kid is born. Good luck with what ever you decide.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I too agree to wait. With all the trouble I had with Molly when she was a baby and all that I had to do to heal her, I had a hard enough time with 3 little kids and homeschooling. A newborn added to that would have been crazy! I think if you waited you will enjoy the newborn more now and then the new pup later when you get that. Congrats on your new baby!

| I think I would wait as well. As much as I do think that 2 keep each other company and in some ways make things easier for their humans, I think with having a new baby on the way it might be wise to wait until things are more settled there. It's such a big change and can sometimes be overwhelming and I think it would be easier to wait and see how things go.... |

| I don't have children, but do have two yorkies. We adopted our second Yorkie, Alex, after our old dog passed away this summer (we had another yorkie already). There was about a 3-month long adjustment period after adopting Alex. Even though we had always had two dogs, having one of those be a different dog took some getting used to. It was actually more of an adjustment period than I anticipated. I also have friends who recently had a baby and that's even MORE of an adjustment. I think they were really overwhelmed with things, and they had a generally happy, calm baby that quickly started to sleep through the night. If you have a colicky baby or one that is just generally fussy, things will be even worse. If I were you, I would wait until after you have your baby, maybe several months even. Give things a chance to settle into a routine. Only then, when you are positive you can handle the baby and the dog you already have, should you talk about getting a second dog.

| If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't bring in a puppy at this time, but I would consider bringing in another one year old dog, provided it got along well with my current dog. I have no kids at home, but I have a 1-year old Yorkie, and I added another 1-year old Yorkie about 2 months ago that needed a new home. They really entertain one another, and that can be helpful when your new baby arrives.

| Good luck with that one...as though adjusting one Yorkie to a baby isn't enough work...plus maintaining the attention a Yorkie needs, while having a new baby-let alone your first! Now you are contemplating adding a puppy at the same time...okay I give up-which super heroes are you two, and how many domestic servants do you have employed? I'd wait until the human baby was a year old before I considered adding a play mate/ partner in crime for your current Yorkie, unless you find a pretrained older dog that gets along with your current Yorkie...and does well with babies and children...don't forget he effort you'll have to put in in baby training...no literally training the baby Last edited by concretegurl; 12-27-2010 at 06:10 AM. |
