I don't have children, but do have two yorkies. We adopted our second Yorkie, Alex, after our old dog passed away this summer (we had another yorkie already). There was about a 3-month long adjustment period after adopting Alex. Even though we had always had two dogs, having one of those be a different dog took some getting used to. It was actually more of an adjustment period than I anticipated.

I also have friends who recently had a baby and that's even MORE of an adjustment. I think they were really overwhelmed with things, and they had a generally happy, calm baby that quickly started to sleep through the night. If you have a colicky baby or one that is just generally fussy, things will be even worse.

If I were you, I would wait until after you have your baby, maybe several months even. Give things a chance to settle into a routine. Only then, when you are positive you can handle the baby and the dog you already have, should you talk about getting a second dog.
