| Yorkies and Cats So as i'm sure some of you are aware, my fiance and I are actively looking for a yorkie puppy. I did some searching on the topic but couldn't find any specific threads. Anyway, we have two cats, both a little over a year old, and we have been wondering how yorkies generally respond to cats. I have read some posts that say that they like to "herd" them, and some people say that they get along just fine. I know each situation is different, however I was wondering if anyone had any general advise or experience in the matter. Thanks ahead of time!! Last edited by 00gt1; 10-25-2010 at 07:32 PM. |

| I think it depends on how tolerant your cats are. We are down to only one cat and she's 15 years old but pretty active still. She's a Bengal and I don't think they ever really grow up. I used to raise Bengals and she was one of my more dominant cats but now she will lay down and have Darwin and Mabel all over her and she's only swiped at them a couple of times, not seriously so it's been great. I used to have a large black cat who would attack neighbourhood dogs and chase them out of our yard. When I had a Doberman, my cat hated her and they never got along. Think of your cats temperament and decide if they are playful or are they a bit mean spirited. Our Yorkies love playing with Sidney and sometimes they just won't leave her alone - we're lucky she's mellowed A LOT! |

| I have several cats and two yorkies. They all get along and actually a couple of them will actually play with the yorkies. I have never had an issue with yorkies and cats. |

| I think it depends on the dog and how the cat is. I don't live with cats but I do visit and sleep at my father's house 1-2 nights a week with Jackson. Jackson was introduced to the 2 cats (one a kitten, one was 1 year old) at 9 weeks old. As a pup, he didn't really seem phased by them. Once he got older, he was definitely interested. With my dad also having a dog, the two of them would sometimes gang up on the cats. Now my dad has a 2nd dog so the 3 of them together will definitely torment the cats.... if they even hear the slighest sound of a 'meow' or the cats feet dropping to the floor, ALL 3 dogs go RUNNING and then the cats go retreat upstairs. Jackson has been fine for the most part one-on-one with the cats. The female cat seems to like him and will rub up against him and he doesn't mind. The boy cat hisses at him a lot of times which drives Jackson nuts. So basically, Jackson would never try to hurt them, but it's definitely a love/hate sort of relationship. If they run, he WILL chase them. Bottom line, I will NEVER live with a cat and Jackson together, it's too annoying.... at night though I have caught them laying together so I think it's all an act! It's mainly just when the 3 dogs are TOGETHER... the only one who WILL snap is my dads JRT mix, I wouldn't trust her with the cats.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Hi - I have 3 cats ranging from 10 years (Callie - female about 12lbs) a 6 year old (Nat - male about 10 lbs) and a 5 year old (Bandit - male about 22 lbs.). The one I expected to have the hardest time accepting Bridget was the old girl - she surprised me and was actually tolerant of her. My big boy - warmed right up to her - but my little guy who I thought would be great with her absolutely hated her. We have a 3 story cat condo, and I swear for the first 2 months at least he spent in the top of the condo just glaring down hissing everytime Bridget walked by. He would come down to eat and use the litter box - but that was it - he was really pi$$ed off at us for bringing her home. Of course Bridget would not let him ignore her - she was in his face all the time when possible (all cats declawed). After he realized she was there to stay - he finally came to terms with it and is fine. We recently brought Greta into our family and the cats never even batted an eye - I think they were glad to have Bridget off their backs!!! Good luck!

| I think it depends on the cat. We have two cats and when we first brought our first Yorkie home her and the one cat became fast friends playing all the time (and still do) the other cat was a different story, Gracie tried to play with him like she did the other cat and he rejected her, fought with her and she tried for a couple months...now they absolutely hate each other. She'll sleep with the one cat yet she won't forgive the other for "not liking her" and she tries to attack him (and him her) thus we have to keep them separated --- which is sad because he was kinda the "big" (18#) baby until she came. I don't see them ever getting along, thus he essentially lives downstairs and only comes up at night after she's gone to bed (crate). For the record he's not 'alone' downstairs he spends most of his time now with our teenage son who - as teenagers go - spends most of his time "downstairs" lol |

| My Levi adores cats, but he is they type of dog that adores every living thing he meets. I got Levi my senior year of undergrad, and my roommate had a 2-year-old female cat, Stella. Stella and Levi were hysterical together. They would "play" chase until Stella got annoyed and jumped wayyy up on something high to Levi. My aunt whom we visit fairly often has 3 cats, and Levi tries to play with all of them, but they are pretty skittish around him as he is just a visitor. Her cats get along fine with her 2 dogs. I doubt Levi and I will ever live with a cat again (just personal preference, I am much more of a dog person), but I think it will be fine. Levi sure did love his Stella.

| Wow, 6 replies in 10 minutes!! That's awsome!! I'm not too worried about our russian blue abby... she's bulletproof. I don't think anything phases her. Eva, our medium haired domestic is a little more moody. It took her about a week of hissing and growling to get used to abby when we got her and she still hisses at anyone that smells like another animal (for example when we came home from the animal shelter). | I have 4 cats and my yorkies love them, but not all the cats like the dogs but they are 12 year old cats, the youngest cat we got from the Rabies control is the sweetest cat she lets the pups play with her tail she sleeps in the room with the yorkies and drinks from their bowl. She is 2 now, I think they will be fine they are now old and set in their ways like some of mine. |

| Our kitty loves Denali but she was very wary of him for the first week and would just sit on the dresser watching him. Now they are best friends and playmates and love each other. I think it definitely depends on the cat though. Personally i feel like a good thing about cats is that as long as they are okay around other animals and it wouldn't be too upsetting for the cat if you got a dog, then bringing in a puppy would be okay because the cat can always find a way to ignore the dog and stay out of its way. Although if thats the case, make sure the kitty gets lots of love too so he/she doesn't feel left out!

| We have 15 cats between my friend and I and 4 dogs a yorkie, and shorkie and two basset hounds. We have no problem. When the dogs are around some of the cats will play with them and the ones who don't care for them will go downstairs to the basement because they know the dogs are afraid to come down the steps. |
