| I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I think that video is more a commercial for the product. If you look at the very first picture the dog is a light blue, but the second picture its looks to be dark blue and this is before use of the product, while in the bath. Either a dark or light blue is acceptable in the show ring. There are products that enhance color, and this has more to do with the way light hits the hair, then the actual pigment of the hair, and these types of color enhancers are acceptable. An actual dye is very drying to the hair, and would eliminate the "blue" they are trying to achieve. A breeder who does too much to change the natural look of the yorkie is only fooling themselves, because they will be passing this trait down the line, and some traits are harder than others to eliminate. The yorkie coat is one of the most difficult to obtain and judge for that matter, there are individual preferences among the judges as well, some preferring the light blue while others prefer the dark. As a side note the yorkie in the video is adorable and would win a prize from me!

| Donating YT 10K Club Member | This video is selling bluing shampoo. They aren't dying the dog. Judges feel their heads and will find ear hair pulled up into a topknot...and while feet which tow in can be trimmed to appear one way...you can't fake movement.

![]() I'm guessing wraps are about the most unpleasant thing show Yorkies endure. Grooming in general, however, doesn't take away from a dog's life. My boys enjoy the attention and will often fall asleep from all of the massage I incorporate in the process. Showing isn't just for human entertainment and it isn't just about looking good. It is to earn approval for the person's breeding stock. (The exhibitors can word that better than I can).

| No Longer a Member | The shampoo they rinsed out , the dye they did not. |

| I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Did you notice his hands while he was applying the spray, they didn't turn black, a permanent color or a temporary color turns the hands black, this product is something that effects how light is reflected from hair.

| YT 1000 Club Member | It is not an acceptable practice to use any type of coloring on a show dog but it is done. However it is not done at the show. Flat irons are acceptable to use at a show. Even though the standard calls for straight silky hair sometimes using the iron gives it a neater appearance or you may have to iron out the hair on a male that was banded to keep him from peeing on his coat. All my dogs sleep with me regardless if they are showing or not.

| Wow, what an interesting video. I thought the Yorkie was being dyed, but guess not.

| I just saw the video and am very shocked. I never knew people did this! It's sad to see what people are willing to do to make their Yorkies look the way they do. I wouldn't do it because Miloh can't stand still for more than 2 mins. and I just love the way he is. It's a lot like the parents who put their 7 year-olds in beauty pageants. I guess this video was a bad interpretation for someone who, like me, really doesn't know much about showing. I'm sure they're not all like that. I understand bettering the breed and earning approval, etc. I'm all for that! I think that the world of dog shows sometimes can just get a little crazy and certain things I've seen and heard have left me a bad taste in my mouth. Not Yorkies in particular. I don't like what a lot of humans have done to the bulldog for example, simply to satisfy human wants and needs, or Pugs... they have major health issues now including breathing issues simply because humans wanted them to have more human-like expressions and face. But I do understand the benefits of dog showing and such... I just don't like what it's become. I'm not saying grooming takes away from a dogs life either because that's simply not the case.

I also agree that this grooming video is probably not representative of show grooming. The dogs I saw being groomed at the one show I have attended looked happier and livelier, and they were handled much more gently. I thought of another great example of a show dog who lives a normal life: YT member Carlybaby has almost finished his boy Sebastien who shares all the same freedoms as his non-show Yorkie sister.

I think if you AND your dog are enjoying it-that is GREAT! I know some dogs just have "IT" and love to walk around that ring and be a show dog and strut their stuff, I think that's wonderful.

| My dogs are my pets first too. Many of the show people I know - have their show dogs as pets. Infact mine sleep in my bed - my first champion hogs my pillow and always have. My hubby take Tara with him everywhere, even Home Depot. She pretty much does not leaves his side. Sure we let them play. My handler even figured out my one boy loves to play soccer. With wraps in they can do pretty much everything. ![]() Have you seen dogs with the mohawks? I saw it on the news - pet section! The groomers in downtown does it if the owners want. Seems to be pretty popular. |
