Dying hair? I don't mean the fun colors, I mean for show. How many show people dye their baby's hair to make it appear more standard? I was searching youtube for a video on topknots and ran across one that demonstrates how to get a yorkie ready for show. They bathed her, and then proceded to dye her hair. The before shot looks nothing like the after, it's a completely different dog. I'm wondering if this is acceptable in the ring and common practice. As a pet owner only, I feel as though this practice is deceiving since one of the reasons you show is for approval of a dog for breeding. If their real coat color is hidden, isn't that similar to lying about your dog? |
I don't think it's supposed to happen but I also think it happens a whole lot more than we know. Not sure you will get anyone to admit to it. I'm new to showing and have never done it - I'm one of those people anyways who goes by the rules and I'm always afraid I'd get caught. I do agree with you, it kind of seems like cheating to me... but maybe I'm wrong..... |
I was really disappointed when I saw that. The dog featured had a really silvery back and after all was done she had a steel blue saddle. They flat ironed her hair to make it super straight. If that's the case, I could show Kaji too. All I need is a mini flat iron and Kaji goes from frizz to sleek. ;) If it works for my hair, it can work for his. :D |
Yes it is deceiving and it is basically lying. Those dogs that are dyed apparently do not fit the yorkie standard they profess to uphold so much. Its a shame all the double standards they preach. Its ok for them to show a dyed dog in the ring, but disqualify others that they say "quote" is out of standard. Heres the video I watched and I thought it was pretty bad to use that much color on a dog for show. Shame on them. |

I remember watching that video a few months back and thinking the same thing. I think dogs that are shown should meet the standard and not be dyed to be that way :rolleyes: |
I was just watching that video last night. The one where he does the topknot I found almost disturbing. It looked like he was using a lot of force to form the "poof". I don't know if this is how all exhibitors do it but it looked like it would be quite uncomfortable. |

I would think that these kind of practices would be forbidden at the shows. I feel like if you have to add dye to your Yorkies coat to make him/her meet Standard then they are not standard. It is totally unethical and against the rules. Which is worse, a person who breeds off color dogs and admits it, or one that breeds them and pretends to be breeding "to better the breed", yet they are no better than the rest of us who breed the off color yorkies. There are also ways to trim the feet to make them look like they are correct and ways to tie some ear hair into the topknot so the ears stand more erect. It's all wrong. And the absolute worst part is, the showring does not show any health defects. they could have LS or any number of things and still become champions, and be used as a stud to produce hundreds of offspring. Sad. |

Wow, that's crazy... that's sooo deceiving and wrong to do. That dog looked like a completely different dog afterwards. I can't believe they allow that stuff in the show ring. I am so just not into showing in general.... I can't imagine having to keep my dog all "perfect" simply to show for humans sake and not let the dog be a dog. Sorry if anyone takes offense or anything but, it just amazes me how long of a process that took and that dog just had to sit there the whole time... I dunno just seems like the human had a lot more fun than the dog which is sad. |
