Love Should I wait until I am back to work before I get my yorkie?

I have not had a yorkie (or any dog for that matter) in several years and am excited to find a new puppy!

At the moment, I am off work, and will not be working again for about 1-2 months. I was wondering if it would be best to find one right away so that I am home all day to train it in its first few weeks, or should I wait until I am working again?

My concern is that if I am home all day for the first few weeks, it would become used to it and get stressed out about suddenly being left home alone for 9 hours daily. Would this actually be a problem or am I over-thinking it?

I always think it is best to have some time off when you bring a new dog home. You will have to resist spending every second with your puppy but you can train your puppy to be independent. Put your puppy in its ex-pen for a few hours, go to the grocery store, go out to dinner, etc.

However, it will be a HUGE asset to potty training, bonding, and general training to have more time on your hands.

I would say go for it now BUT I do want to say it may be difficult to find a quality yorkie so soon, it may take awhile to find the perfect yorkie for you, so I wouldnt rush it just to have extra time with them.

I agree with Armaniman. It would be great to get your puppy now so you can train and bond with it, but it may be difficult to find the perfect pup so quickly. Good luck in your search!

I personally have found it is best to be home during the first few weeks to get the new puppy adjusted to living in a new home and begin training immediately.

Being home the first few weeks will strengthen your bond with your new puppy.

I am glad you are over-thinking it. Most people dive in without giving any thought to it. I think now is a great time to find a pup that is 12 weeks or over. You will have 2 months together for bonding and training. My only concern is when you return to work, 9 hours alone is too long. Can you come home for lunch and let him or her out? Good Luck with your search.

I too think your new pup can benefit greatly at this time with you being home. House training will be so much easier for you if you can be consistent with him and get him outside every few hours. As for once you're back to work, well maybe you can get him into doggy daycare a few days a week or have someone come in to walk him or go home on your lunch hour. I bet you'll find something to make it work! Good luck!

Getting your puppy while you off of work would be the best thing but as ManolosMom said it might take you awhile to find a quality pup - so I'd start looking

Going back to work after being home with them is fine - like someone else stated - just take breaks leaving the house for short periods of time to get them use to it.

Nine hours is a very long time for a young pup. Maybe you could find an older one.

Good Luck and Welcome to YT!

I'm home all the time so I didn't have to think about that. Though Charlie does not like it when I go out. He's sooo smart. When I sit at my makeup table, he knows I'm really going out. If I just do makeup in the bathroom, he knows I'm just going to be around the house.

I do think you'll be better off having the time off and bonding with the dog rather than being out at work. You can always go out for a few hours so he gets used to you coming and going. And he probably will have a little separation anxiety when you go back to work, but he'll have to get used to it.

When I went to work full-time, my little kids were fine with it, but my oldest was furious. She had a really hard time. But I just gave her extra attention when I got home. I think Yorkies are very much like people in their responses to things. He'll adjust. And you'll have the benefit of having all that time with him before you go back to work and getting all your routines in place.

Best of luck!

I was not working when I got my puppy, and having the extra time to train him has paid dividends. It also gave me a great outlet for when boredom or the not-working-blues set in; I knew I play with him or cuddle him and that helped quite a bit. Good luck.

I think it is important to be home for a while when you first get a new puppy. You have to think that they are leaving their mom and litter mates and coming into a new home and if you are not there they are coming into an empty house. At least if you have a few weeks off you can help the puppy get adjusted and do some special bonding to help the transition easier for the new little one.

I am home most of the day and my dogs hate it when I leave but they do get over it!! lol I think I just feel guilty when I have to go out.

Great point!

When I got my first Yorkie, BellaBoo...I was fortunate enough to work a hop, jump & a skip away from home (well, about 3 minutes) and could take my lunch breaks at home with her everyday.

Aaah, the memories of counting the hours till I could escape the workplace to fly home to be smothered in puppy kisses!

Having time to spend with a new puppy while you are off work would be ideal however, that depends on when that time begins and when you actually find your new baby.

Don't rush...please take your time and remember, there are many dogs available through a variety of rescue groups that need a furever person & home, too!

You've gotten some great advice, but nine hours is a long time for any dog to be left alone, and especially a yorkie. One of the reasons I like this breed, is they really bond with you and seem more like a little human child than many other breeds. They are needier than some. Have you thought about other breeds or even a cat? They can give you lots of love, but thoroughly enjoy their alone time. Yorkies can live 15 years, it's really a huge commitment, and make sure you're ready to make sacrifices if you take this responsibility.

I think it is best to go ahead and get the puppy now before you go back to work. This will be a great time to bond and start with the housetraining. JMO of course;

Would you consider an older (year or so) yorkie vs a puppy especially if you are going back to work in 1 to 2 months. You can look into local rescue groups for an older yorkie. They should have been spayed/neutered gotten their shots, potty trained. There are so many dogs in rescue groups and/or shelter that are looking for a good home. Just a thought.
