My concern is that if I am home all day for the first few weeks, it would become used to it and get stressed out about suddenly being left home alone for 9 hours daily. Would this actually be a problem or am I over-thinking it?

I was not working when I got my puppy, and having the extra time to train him has paid dividends. It also gave me a great outlet for when boredom or the not-working-blues set in; I knew I play with him or cuddle him and that helped quite a bit. Good luck.
