| My yorkie hates to be bathed and brushed. My little l5 week old Ginger hates to take a bath. She squirms and wiggles and scratches and tries to get away from me. She doesn't like to be brushed even though I am very gentle and not pull at any mats. What I have been doing is to brush just a small area and then reward her with a cheerio. then she lets me do another area. Any ideas to make grooming time more enjoyable? From a yorkie mom who wants a clean baby. |

| Well, of the three I have had the pleasure to love/groom/bathe I can say this: They are all different. One loves the water and never squirms. One doesn't love it but suffers through it for me, and one gets feisty in the sink and I have to scold him. Treats are good. Also, just be matter of fact about it. I brush and bathe Fergus, he isn't overjoyed about it, but he knows he has no other choice. So, as long as you are firm, but loving, you will set the pattern. Its like anything else with a yorkie: you have to either make THEM want to do it, or make darn sure they know YOU want it and are going to get your way regardless. Not mean, but firm. Then my Fergus always gets a good snuggle when he is clean and fresh!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Roxy used to be the same way. Her willingness to be brushed when very young ended suddenly & all she wanted to do was bite/chew the brush. This continued for quite awhile & I calmly persisted that we were going to do this. Eventually she decided it was OK & even seems to enjoy it now. Bathing at first wasn't welcome at all, but she has gotten better with each bath. She's almost 10 mo now & tonight while I was rinsing she even, she even raised her little chin for me to rinse her face & chin area. I'm like YEA! When I rinse her head area I reduce the water pressure in the sprayer. Make sure she seems to be comfortable the the water temperature. I wrap her in a big towel for a few minutes before I let her go to do her typical floor slithering. It has always seemed to help her to snuggle in the towel for a little while. Of course a little treat at the end is great too. Keep trying & hopefully she'll realize it's not all a bad thing. Stay calm while working on her. Hoping you have great success after while.

| I use a grooming arm so I have both hands free. Some of mine fought the brushing at first, but they get used to it if you don't let them have their own way. I bathe and brush all of mine once a week and they are all in full coat. |

| Rockie was always not wanting his bath are to be brushed. He has learned it's a necessary routine. Sometimes when l get his personal towel, shampoo and conditioner he starts running to not get his bath; oh boy can he run. He eventually settles down for his bath time.

| You may already know this but it's very important to brush them before you give the bath. It keeps mats from setting in and therefore makes brushng easier. I agree with what one of the other posters said. You have to let them know that you are the one in control and they may not like it but they still have to sat there and let you do it. On another note my Miley gets all huffy with me tooabout grooming lol..I just tell her no when she's squirming and praise her lots whe she is sitting still for me.. |

| I bathe Sophie regularly (once a week) and when I give her a bath, I usually treat at the same time. She is 16 weeks old and now LOVES her bath. She has even begun to like the blow dryer (the Andis pet dryer) because she knows it's warm! What helped me was to put some warm water in the sink I use so she's not just on the cold marble and to talk to her while I'm bathing her. She loves to hear "Yay, Sophie!" or "Good job, Sophie!" Before I use the blow dryer and brush, comb, etc., I also towel dry her and carry her around for a bit wrapped up in the warm towel. She likes that a lot. Then I blow dry her and brush and we're done! Tonight I gave her a bath and she even let me use the blow dryer on her head, which she used to HATE! I was able to get her almost completely dry with the dryer. I was very proud of her. Also, ever since I began using a conditioner on her, she has seemed to enjoy her bath, better, too. |

| Train, train & train them! Practice makes Perfect.......Yorkies, especially need to be "TRAINED" to do every thing including being Groomed. Everything from getting their Teeth brushed to being Bathed, shampooing & conditioning, blow dryed etc. Daily brushings at least twice a day? The whole Grooming Routine whether it's done on a daily or weekly basis should be a relaxing experience for both of you! I have 3 Yorkies, 1 male (5 yrs. old) and 2 females that are 4 and 3 yrs. old. They all love to be Groomed, it's like a luxurious Spa Day. You have to understand that it's a Puppy and has to be taught/TRAINED to accept the Grooming process. They all have full long coats and I do all their Grooming, I even use Clippers and file their Nails too. Make sure you are relaxed when you are doing it and make sure that you do not get emotional or frustrated or angry? They pick-up on your Energy so try to make it a positive experience. Are using the right Grooming Tools and Brushes? That might make a difference? I only stress the importance of mastering this task b/c "Grooming" is another way to bond with your Pet, besides "Walking" or "Sleeping" with him.

| Kimbo gets a bath every 6 days and is brushed every night. All he has to do is hear the word bath and he starts whining. We try to talk him through it, but he really doesn't love it yet. No screaming or growling, only whimpering and escape attempts. Every night after dinner he and I sit down with about 6 pieces of kibble that I reserve from his dinner bowl to "groom". He lets me brush him so nicely as long as I keep treating him with kibble. Once the last piece is gone, he's done. He usually checks my hands to make sure I'm all out, and then he hops off my lap to go play. |

| It is very important to start good grooming practices when they are young. From the time they were young I bathed all of mine in the kitchen sink. Make sure that you gather all of your supplies before you begin their bath and open all of you bottle of shampoo/conditioner. I put a hand towel down in the bottom of the sink so they did not slide around and when they were very small I always kept one hand on them (or their little collar) and talked in a very calm voice and gave little treats. I used a wash cloth to clean their face and the sink sprayer held against the body for rinsing. Afterward I would let them down to run and unwind a little. I also think it is very important that you always groom in the same spot---I always use the top of my dryer as my grooming station. I take the towel that I used to dry them after their bath and lay that on the dryer, plug in my dryer, have my grooming supplies right there and of course a few more treat. It is important that you start and finish the grooming process and not let them think it is alright to fuss so you let them down. Once again I always keep one hand on their body and brush/comb/blowdry. I feel that it is comforting and reassuring until they are use to what we are doing. All three of mine are very good both for me and for the groomer.........but Pebbles will run when she see I am getting the sink ready
