| ? about dog nipping someone We brought our 5 month old puppy who is almost 8 lbs to the vet on Friday for his last set of shots and to have his blood work done since he is getting fixed next month. They brought our puppy in the back and we could hear him screaming and crying. He was back there for approximately 45 minutes, unfortunately they were unable to draw blood from him. The vet finally came out and said he bit a vet tech. Now me and my hubby were both upset. We asked the vet if the vet tech was ok and the vet tech was standing right there and said she was fine. She also said he did not break the skin. Fast forward to this morning. I get a call from the department of health stating that they reported it as a dog bite and that my dog must be quarantined for 10 days to make sure he is not sick and to make sure that the vet tech doesnt get sick. I am really upset. They did not inform me that they were reporting it and they reported that the skin was broken when we were told it was not. I am really upset over this. Should I call the vet and complain? |

| I would be really pissed at my Vet Not only because they reported something that goes on in a Vets office every single day But More because they didn't tell you that while you were there If I were you I'd be at the Vet's office with the paper asking for a VERY good explanation

| I'm not sure if it has to be reported but the whole thing sounds crazy. there is no way that an attempted blood draw and vaccines should take 45 minutes. It should take 5-10 minutes maximum. Most bites can be avoided if the dog is restrained properly. If he was getting aggressive, they could've used a muzzle. Ellie wiggles like crazy at the vet's office and it still takes less than 5 minutes to draw blood. I just wouldn't expect most of the vet's that Ellie has been to to report that.

| I'd have to wonder what the vet or tech did to get bit especially if you have a dog that has never shown this tendency. Not to mention they are in a profession where even the most calm and loving dog is going to nip or bit if they are in pain. You would think they would take that into consideration. I wouldn't be able to be separated for that long is there a way to get an appeal of the decision? Also my vet uses me holding my dog when he does a blood draw or gives shots cause he says they tend to be calmer for the owner than for strangers. Last edited by Symph2001; 03-16-2009 at 07:43 AM. |

| Well I left a message for my vet and she finally called me back. She told me that everything now must be reported. I told her that I would have appreciated being told this Friday night and she apologized and said she didnt even think of it. She said the quarantine is just precaution to make sure he doesnt have rabbies. She told me not to worry about it as he had his shot a month ago. He had his rabbies vac on February 11th so we should be ok there. I've had dogs all my life, usually big ones and never had a problem. |

| Amen to that! About the time I heard my baby screaming in another room, I would be in there and she would be removed before they could even react!! And I wouldn't be back! And if I got such a thing as that letter, I'd not only be confronting someone in that vet's office, I wouldn't be doing it quietly or privately either!

| IMO your vet should have THOUGHT to tell you she had to report the bite. I would be finding a new vet for sure. I am sure your puppy was scared. First of all I go into the room with Buddy. I wouldn't have it any other way. Buddy get's muzzled for his exam. He's a big Yorkie and will give the vet a warming by trying to nip him so the vet muzzles him because he's scared. That's fine with me. I don't want him to bite anyone. My vet told me he's been bit by several of his patients over the years. They have to expect this and so do the vet tech's. They are professonals and have training in this field and have to know dog's are scared when they come into the office. You have a right to be present during the exam if they say no another reason to get a new vet. I wouldn't allow my child to go into a room with a doctor without my presence and I feel the same way about my dog. I want to see what's going on. I know it's stressfull. In the state of NY if a dog bites three times that's it! Scary because some bites are just from fright and the poor dog can't talk and explain that's way you need to be in the room. |

| if he's had his shots and you can prove it then why does he need the quarantine? Doesn't really make sense... |

| I'm very concerned for you... Quote:
I'd like to add that I'm very concerned for you. Did the health department or your vet tell you that (depending on your state laws) if your dog gets reported two or three times they may label it as a "dangerous dog" and / or may force you to have her put to sleep. I'm not trying to scare you, but I what you to be aware that it's not as simple as your vet is trying to make you think it is. Plus, if you own a home, this can affect your home owner's insurance. Some insurance companies will not cover you if you have a "dangerous dog". This is why I never let the vet's take my dog from my sight. If they refuse to do the treatments in front of you, then you simply say it's not happening. If they refuse to do it in front of you go, no run to another vet. You are the paying customer. They are not the boss over this deal. I'm very sorry that your vet did this to you. I would find another vet. Your vet may have told you that it was mandatory to report all bites, but a bite that doesn't break the skin????? Is that really a bite, or just a nipple / warning to stop hurting her? How do you know she will be safe there when they go to spay her? They neglected to tell you that they were going to report your baby, what else will they "forget" to tell you. And your baby can't tell you what happens. I just wouldn't feel that my dog was safe in their care anymore. As said by others, getting bite is really the vet tech's fault. She should have restrained your baby properly. It's insane to think that you are going to poke a dog with a needle over and over and not be bitten. I'd bite you too.

So is she saying your baby doesn't have to be quarantined? Is she going to lie to the health department and say held the dog for 10 days? If she's willing to lie then why didn't she just lie and not report it to begin with. What was her explanation about the fact that they told you it didn't break the skin but the report said it did? The sad thing is that your dog has been reported as "a biter" so what happens if it happens again?
