Akc registered puppy in pet store. Is that ok?

Even if we assume that the puppy you get will be the most perfect pup and never have any health problems, by purchasing from a pet store you are allowing puppy mills to exist. Do you really want to continue to perpetuate that? The best thing we can all do to shut down puppy mills is to simply, not buy our puppies from pet stores.
That being said.... I do feel sorry for the puppies at the pet stores too but if we don't stop buying from them, puppy mills will never be shut down!
And on a personal note, my sister got a yorkie a few months before I got my Zoe. She got Scruffy from a pet store. He passed away this last Oct at 2. He was full of cancer tumors.

Ok if the puppy mills close and then pet stores how will people buy dogs. i think im going to research and find ways to bring them down and let you guys in on it. Cause i think people are going to keep buying from pet stores

Wow im sorry to hear that. She also should have got her money back even though it would not have helped her pain and suffer over the dog

Why wouldn't you rather find a reputable breeder who has done testing for genetic defects? Usually, you end up paying LESS money to a reputable breeder then you would a pet store who has jacket up the price. Even if the puppy in the petstore does cost less...it's for a reason. Why do reputable breeders breed dogs if it isn't for the money? Because they TRULY care about dogs and bettering the breed. It is their hobby and thir passion. Isn't that where you'd like your future pet to come from? A loving and caring home? I'm telling you, my little pug dog has had anxiety issues and is extremely timid because she came from a puppymill. This is something that she's NEVER outgrown. Yes, these dogs deserve to be loved too, but as the poster above said...you are just contributing to the never ending cycle of these puppymills by giving them the opportunity to produce more dogs. When their source of income is gone is when they'll finally be forced to quit mass producing these puppies.

Well to be honest one of the reason was because the lady told me that i could pay 100 a month for the dog and I know with the breeder I will have to pay all the money right then and I rather pay that amount of money over a long period of time than at once. But I totally understand what you guys are saying about the puppy mills.

Ahhh, I gotcha. You were offered a payment plan. Maybe you could just do what I did and save some money each month until you can afford your Yorkie. Good Luck, I'm glad that you are seeing now that petshops aren't the way to go

Pet stores themselves don't have to close. The just shouldn't sell dogs, especially not from puppy mills where 99% of them come from.

And you're right, people are going to keep buying from pet stores. But they shouldn't. And since you now know all the information about, you should be knowledgeable enough to inform others about it, even if it's just friends/family.

As to your question, how are people going to buy dogs? Haha! 3-4 million cats and dogs are euthenized (killed) every year. There is PLENTY (far too many!) dogs on this Earth and many many many places to choose from besides pet stores. Shelters, rescue groups, animal control facilities where the dogs usually only get to stay alive a week if no one adopts them. I also understand a lot of people want puppies (as I did, but my next I plan on rescuing with my older) and that's easy. There is LOADS of puppies in sheleters as well. The shelter near my house where I go often is always coming in with pregnant mothers and their pups. And then there's also the responsibile breeders to choose from!

If you adopt a puppy or dog from a shelter, they're usually only between $100-$350 for an adoption fee. They've also already been spayed/neutered, given first sets of shots, dewormed, etc.

Before I got my Yorkie, I did research by reading up on them in books, magazines, going to even pet shops, shelters, and etc. I learned that the pet shops do have the necessary paper work and are telling you information, but limited. I found out someone from another state has driven these dogs in from where they breed them at and sells them to the pet shops. I don't know if it is a puppy mill cause they don't know either. From what I did learn, you need and see where the puppy is raised, their enviroment and whether it is a clean place. Next you need to meet the puppies parents. I did this and I have a healthy Yorkie. His enviroment was clean, his parents were there on site and it looked like a well-maintained area, not a puppy mill. I asked a lot of questions and was there about an hour. I am happy and grateful I found a good dog. Good Luck in your search.

There has recently been some very large raids on puppy mills by police and humane societies. Hundreds of dogs taken from those mills will be evaluated and get vet care. They are then put up for adoption. Here's a link with more info

Well Im doing my research. im reading a book right now and looking up info on the web. But how can you do what your saying above even if you get it from a shelter. 9 out of 10 i dont think they will have the parent to see and looking from the one site in my home town i think they get them from puppy mills

Please don't buy a puppy from the store. They buy it from puppy mills or backyard breeders. No reputable breeder will ever sell their puppies to the store!

It took me quite a few months of research, talking to people and etc before I took the plunge. If you get them from a shelter you don't know what health issues they have, what training if they had any, what damage they can do to your place of residence or how they will interact with you or your other pets you may have. So many dogs go thru the shelters and are picked up from the streets. I've talked with people whom got a dog from a shelter and within a week it died, literally. They would not replace it. I also was told that so many animals go thru the shelters and are checked by their Vet, but they have so many they can't check each pet totally.
