Akc registered puppy in pet store. Is that ok?

shelters dont BUY puppies from puppy mills. they raid the mills to put them out of business and RESCUE the dogs that arent too sick, ect. and then put those puppies for adoption in the shelter...

Well that's definitely not all shelters?

The place I always go to near my house keeps their dogs in fantastic help and are SO picky with whom they adopt the animals out to! You fill out an application first and then before you're even allowed to adopt the animal out, your current pets and fam members must meet the pet as well. And they come to your house to evaluate if it's a good environment. That's a no kill shelter. They have the same routine at the Pound/animal control place I visited.

And that's the point. Most of them need rehabilitation and if no one is willing to help & try, they just get killed. So why NOT adopt a dog in need, who may yes very well have anger issues, aggression, etc. It CAN be fixed.

On the other hand, you can also find a ton of puppies in shelters who have a fresh new slate!

I forgot about those places and we do have them here as well. Check your local newspaper. At least here is where they advertise for sale of which are breeders from reputable people. That is where I found mine. Or you can go to American Kennel Club - akc.org website and find a breeder there. Most of them have show dogs for sale that don't qualify to show and they sell them from what I know. Or wait till the dog show comes to your town and talk to the breeders there and maybe they will have one for sale.

Thats what im saying. I think just buying a puppy from a pet store or shelter you risk health issues

AKC registration means nothing if the breeder is a bad breeder. It doesn't even mean that they are pure bred, it only means that the breeder claims that they are.

True, but you have to also consider your time involved. What I mean is, do you have the time for a pet~? My Yorkie has been a wonderful mid-life crisis for me, but he needs a lot of attention like a child. We walked 3 hours today between visiting neighbors and talking with them. I thought the fella was worn out, nope. We played ball about an hour ago. This was a calm day. Usually it is like this from the time I get up or get home. It is a life-time committment. Some folks don't realize that and their pet goes to the shelters or somewhere~!

Oh yeah! I don't think you TRULY realize what a commitment a dog (a pup even more) is. It's literally like having a baby. As puppies, you're waking up with them 1-3 times a night, sometimes more. Constantly changing/cleaning pee and poop. They always need your constant attention. 24/7 watching them. Going outside every hour as pups. If you leave the house, you have to make sure to be back at a certain time, if you go on vacation you have to find a dogsitter or kennel to place them in. You must take them to get all their puppy shots which cost $ and take time! Get them spayed/neutured. Whew! It's a long list of things! And I think some people just Are not cut out to be dog owners. But in the end, in my opinion, it's so worth it for the love they give you for so long and companionship!

I totally agree!!!!!!Too many people get a pup with good intentions and then cannot handle all the responsibility of having one. These end up being bred, because isn't it fun to have puppies. They get sold to Gods knows who and the cycle starts all over again.
The people who decide after a few weeks, that they are not cut out to have dogs or handle the responsibility, end up taking them to a shelter. Which fills up with these unwanted pooches.
I think there should be close screenings for dog owners. They should be able to pay for the unforseen surgeries, emergencies etc. or made to purchase pet health insurance. Spay/neutering should be mandatory except for screened breeders. Does anyone see where I'm getting at with this?

I agree 100% with you. I had issues trying to train my fella. We were outside for 45+ minutes and he would not go potty~! This was tough to teach him to go and all the fustrations. Even used puppy pads....but it didn't work....but eventully he did catch on...and eventually went outside....but it took forever....maybe close to 9 months, I forgot.

I agree 100% with you also. I took him to puppy training in January 2008. He choked on some food and I thought he was a goner and I had to rush him to the emergency animal hospital inbetween calling and telling the teacher I wouldn't be there that first night. That bill was over $200~!
