| New yorkie, he is a year old and tiny. My first yorkie. Any advise? So I pick him up on saturday, from the breeder... I guess that the person who bought him left him in a hot car for too long and now he is back with the breeder (not sure if he was taken away or is she just gave him back). Anyway his birthday was 10/1/2007 so he just turned a year and he is my first yorkie. And the first dog of my own! I have had dogs growing up with my mother. And have always drempt of getting a yorkie. Well now my boyfriend and I are getting our first! He is supposed a little special. "forest gump" special they say... he walks a little sideways sometimes and gets tired after extended walking around, and he can't play fetch or anything like that. I am thinking with a little "physical therapy" work he will get a little better. Okay so I keep getting off topic because I am just so excited!!! I just wanted some advice, of course I have read everything about yorkies possible... just some personal advise. I was told he weighed 1.3 pounds. Maybe a little help to keep him happy at such a small size? What brand of pee pads and food to get him? Treats all yorkies love. Just a little bit of advise. Thank you! -Kaity |

| congrats on your new baby!!! well i feed prey model raw but if you're not ready to go into that i'd recommend any brand of raw food or a grain free kibble... (it is hard for dogs to digest grains, and they don't get any benefit from it, they just poop it out) i've heard good things about blue buffalo, nature's variety, enova, etc... but don't have much knowledge on kibbles, since i don't feed kibble... now, make sure to keep nutrical (or karo syrup) handy, with such a tiny baby he'll be prone to hypoglycemia (blood sugar drops) after being active especially... i dunno what brand of pee pads we use we just get whatever fits our budget BUT we have a plastic thing that the peepad fits into which i really recommend to protect your floors (i got it at petsmart for like 16 dollars i think) the weather will be cooling down soon so make sure you have a blanket to keep your baby warm, you might also want to invest in pjs if his coat is thin...just to make sure that he is warm this winter. my baby likes squeakie toys... there are lots of little puppy toys to keep him entertained. I'd recommend keeping him in a crate when you're not home to keep him safe and out of things that could harm him. (not for longer than like a couple of hours if possible) if you're out of the house for more than 4 or 5 hours then consider getting an exercise pen, that you can set up in any (preferably) tiled area w/ bed and toys and food on one side and pee pad on the other...that way your baby is safe from harm and so is your furniture and floors!

| oh! and treats... chattiesmom has yorkie yummies those are popular! also try to stay away from anything that has wheat or corn, as those are known allergens for doggies, zukes mini naturals are good...

| Congrats on your new baby!!! I have a yorkie mix rescue who is turning one this month and she was literally at death's door when I got her. She is now about 2 lbs, so I am familiar with the special needs teeny pooches! First, the teeny ones are super easy to have around because they are just so darn small! Make sure you puppy proof your apartment though, because they will go underneath a piece of furniture, get too scared to turn around and you'll be lying on your belly trying to reach your puppy and no one will be happy! Block off all areas he can get into that you would not want him to go in. Pee pee pads are great - I actually just buy incontinence sheets from the drugstore because they are cheaper. Make sure you are feeding a healthy, high quality diet and that it is appropriate in size for your new baby's mouth. You also need chew objects and squeaky toys that are appropriate in size. No rawhide! Its dangerous. Instead, bullysticks and flossies are great for our little ones. Make sure you have treats on hand, but DO NOT let your new baby get overweight. Halo Liv-A-Little's Chicken treats are LOVED by most pups and they are pure protein, so you dont have to worry. Finally - enjoy your new baby and be totally excited that you have by-passed the teething and other annoying puppy stages and get to enjoy nothing but fun with your fabulous new pup! Keep asking questions on YT, we are all here to help!

| :D Thank you guys so much. I will look into all those food and treat brands today. I want to have everything ready before he gets here . As far as sweaters I have already bought a few I am just scared they are going to big so I am going to wait to take him with me. Thank you for the heads up about nutrical I had heard about the drops but did not know the name brand. I actually think some come with him. I have been trying to "yorkie" proof our house but it's pretty easy because we had took in two ferrets for a short time. And I think I am going to try airmen hammer pee pads. Thanks for the heads up about the pee pad holder. -Kaity |

| Kaity - sounds like you are on your way to spoiling him silly! As all puppies should be! I am also a prey model raw feeder, like one of the responders above. If raw feeding is something you are interested in, there are premade raw diets which make it a cinch to get started. You must be SO excited!

| Congrats on your puppy, my Duke is turning 1 on 10/14/08 as well. Seems like everyone answered all your questions. Just a bit on the sweater as you mentioned...when I got Duke, he was only 1.6lband the smallest sweater I found for him seems too "heavy" on him because he couldn't really walk around in it. Also, try to look for sleeve-less sweater/clothes. I find that they're so small at that size that their legs need the freedom to move where having clothes on might make it harder. I buy pee wee pads at Walmart, it's the blue and white bag comes in 50/bag for around $13, the cheapest I've seen but I haven't look at the incontinence pads, that's a good idea too. Good luck

| Im sure this little guy will have a wonderful home.. I always went to walmart or a second hand store and gor a pack and play bed for infants.. i would put the pee pad on one end and food an water in one corner an a bed in the other and they love it off the floor where no cool air can give them chills... now the pee pads i use to use the paper pads untill i started to get the EZWHELPING.com they have reclaimed pads an i bought about 10 of the ones under 4 bucks.. clean off the mess and put them in the washer with bleach and laundry detergent and they are great... saves money to.... I hope you have talked to a vet on this speacial needs baby .. and like everyone says please make sure you keep kayro syrup on hand i give mine some at night and morning make sure you keep his food and water out all the time.. Good luck |

It took only about 3 weeks for him to associate himself with his new name. Dogs don't identify with their names like we humans do, so it doesn't cause any emotional difficulty! You can just say the new name and hand him a treat - and repeat lots of times! Before you know it - you'll say his name and he'll look right at you!

| Congratulations on your new baby I'm sure you can't wait!!! One thing I didn't see mentioned is a cat collar with a bell on it. These little ones have a way of getting underfoot, and it would be good to have some warning on where he is at all times so that you won't accidentally step on him. The cat collars are just the right size and most have a breakaway feature so that they if they get caught up on something, they won't get strangled. I would just put it on him whenever he's not in his crate/pen Definitely make sure he's eating something every few hours, as at that size their tummies don't hold much at a time. If anything doesn't seem right with him, check his gums, if all is well they'll be dark pink. If they are light, he needs to eat or have Nutrical stat! I can't think of anything else that wasn't already mentioned except to make sure that he's warm, those tiny babies get chilled so easily. Good luck, can't wait to see pictures of him

| Wow what a teeny weeny yorkie. I would so love to see a pic of him. I think you have gotten some great advice already. I am sure he will be 1 spoiled yorkie. A freind of mine had a really really small dog before. He named her Fearless. It used to be so funny when people met her for the first time. She always slept in the bedroom and when anyone used to visit him he used to call Fearless out. Well people who never met her, were expecting this huge dog to come out. Well the laughs he used to get when wee tiny fearless came in. ROFL. So I think Fearless would be good for him.
