I think its OK to change his name! Fresh start - fresh name! This way, if he has any negative associations to his past name, those can be forgotten! My best friend rescued a 5 year old toy poodle who had no name prior to rescue - he was used as a stud at a mill and he was only a number.

It took only about 3 weeks for him to associate himself with his new name. Dogs don't identify with their names like we humans do, so it doesn't cause any emotional difficulty!

You can just say the new name and hand him a treat - and repeat lots of times! Before you know it - you'll say his name and he'll look right at you!
