Default Weights and measures

Hi - we have three Yorkies. We lost a male in February who was around 10 lbs. most of his life.

We found that the larger Yorkie was stronger, able to jump up and down on furniture, trained well for obstacle courses and other lessons and was a robust dog with all the typical Yorkie characteristics we all know and love.

As we understand it, the original Yorkies from the 1860s to 1880s were indeed more like 14 lbs. and did very well at that weight.

Our current Yorkies are 5, 6 and 7 lbs. but two are still under a year old and may grow a bit more. We are concerned with health more than size and have found that tiny Yorkies' life expectancy is often shorter as tiny organs don't take well to the medications that often help in later years with problems that are common in the breed.

For us, the focus on size with Yorkies is very disappointing. We support breeders who focus on good health, good teeth and pleasant disposition. The least healthy Yorkies we have been involved with were tiny, bred for the show ring and very sorely missed after early departures.

Generally is 9 months old and about 9 lbs. He was the runt of the litter, but has outgrown all his siblings. We saw the parents and they were not real small but not at big as him. We saw his older brother from a previous litter and Generally is much bigger. Generally is a very strong and healthy puppy. I would like to get him involved in an activity that would use his strength. He is also very active. We love him as he is and are actually glad he got a bit bigger than his brother.

My girls have had 5 litters between them, before this last litter I was able to say that all my puppies have been within standard. In this last litter I had one boy who was a big boy. When his parents picked him, I told them he was going to be big. They ask how big, I said I didn't know because he was off the weigh charts. He is 8 months old and weighs in around 8lbs. They wish he was smaller , but they always say, you told us. Being honest is about all a breeder can do. And if you don't know, then tell them. I sold a puppy once who I thought was going to be over 7lbs, I let him go a little cheaper and he is 5 ls full grown. Sometimes , you just don't know.

I totally understand how u feel! When I got my Yo-yo the lady said she will be 5lbs max. She was 2lbs at 10 weeks old. Shes only 5 months old and already 5 1/2 lbs. Her parents were 6lbs (dad) and 4 lbs (mom). I wanted a dog that would stay about 5 or 6lbs. I also have a young child. Yo-yo was the smallest out of the litter too. The lady wanted me to take her sibling which was double her size. Thank god I took the smallest.

I have an 8 lb. dog but I do think she is probably a couple of lbs overweight, but I am happy she is at least this big. When she was a puppy, we worried so much about stepping on her or droppping her. I dont understand the focus on the "smaller the better." Most of the really tiny dogs have significant health issues and shorter lives. I want my baby with me as long as possible...just because she might be cuter if she was a few lbs smaller , I wouldnt trade that for more time with her.

I was told that Harley's parents were 4 and 5 pounds and he was the runt of the liter. I wasn't expecting him to be over that. He just turned 5 months old and when I took him to the vet he is already weighing 8.2 pounds. I wanted a small Yorkie and I think he is going to be gigantic. I still love him the same but it is a little disappointing.

Ginger is 12 weeks and weighs 3.12 pounds. That doesn't even show up on the yorkie growth chart - it's off the scale. I have a 4 year old daughter so I wasn't looking for the smallest. Ginger has a fantastic personality and is learning fast. Smart girl! No matter what size she ends up, she is now family and she is loved.

BTW, why don't they come up with a teapot yorkie growth chart? There are lots of them out there.

i also wanted a small dog when i first got milu, i didn't know that it could mean they were unhealthy. i think a lot of people would think twice about getting a smaller dog if they knew that the dog could have health problems if they are small.

after i got milu, i continue to do research and found YT and realized that small dogs might be a bred just for the small size without considering the health issues, then i started to freak out about milu's small size. (because she is very picky eater and doesn't like to eat very much)

i still worry about milu and think that maybe she will have health problems. and i get frustrated when people always ask me how much she cost and what breeder i got her from. i try to do my part to tell them about what small size means and that they shouldn't shop for a dog based on size. but i think most people have been marketed to so much that they don't care, they just want their purse dog...

Precious is 2 1/2 yrs old & in the winter weighs more 8 to 8 1/2 lbs; but in the summer because of all her outdoor playing I imagine she goes down to 7 lbs. I did get a little nervous when she 1st starting gaining weight in the winter because I thought a pound and a half is alot for her little body to handle but then again it wasn't like she gained it overnight. She is a happy & healthy little girl & in the winter we just say Come here you fat little toad

My missy is 17 months old and 9 pounds. I was told she was going to be small too, like 5 pounds. When I got her at 3 months she was only 2.5 pounds. What can I say she eats good

I like Jackson being bigger! Less things to worry about! He can jump off the couch and my bed easily without me worrying all the time about a broken leg or something. (I know it can still happen but it's less of a chance) and Jackson's around a lot of kids and other dogs and he can be rougher with them than he could if he was a tiny little thing.

He was 6 pounds at his 12 week appointment. And at his 16/17 week appt. he was already 8.6 pounds! By now (he hasn't been to the vet since) he's probably 9 pounds. He still seems so small to me though! But he's not "overweight" it's just his body type. He's a healthy little boy.

His parents were apparently 6 and 7 pounds but I never saw the parents so the breeder could've lied but I really don't care, LOL. I love him.

At 13 weeks old Baxter weighed 2.5 lbs. Wow I thought what a nice small little boy he is going to be. The little stinker ate like a vacuume cleaner, and we did call him Orick at times. Well now at 16 months old he is a even 9 lbs. And is still a chow hound. He is tall but not fat, or even chunky. He is sturdy, and very healthy. and the vet says he is absolutely perfectly proportioned. I don't feel I have to worry about him with knees, or other problems that the small guys are apt to have. He is still a little snuggler, and a love. I am actually very glad he turned out to be bigger than expected. As said already, its just more to love.

I just had my Trixie spayed yesterday and she is 9 lbs at 6 mo. She's just a big girl. Not fat but taller and longer than my Coco and Pebbles. There are new pictures in my album if you want to compare. They are so silly. She just towers over them and she hasn't grown into her body yet so she is clumbsy. She just climbs on you like she is a 4 pounder. She's solid like a log. lol

Riot is 12 weeks old today (saturday) and when we took him to the vet a few days ago (tuesday) he was just under 2.5 pounds. If you double that, he should be around 5 pounds, but if you follow the growth chart I think it says 6 pounds. His mom was 7 pounds and dad 4 pounds. I guess we'll just wait and see!

I couldn't imagine him being that tiny full grown! The little skinker somehow wiggled his head through the 1.5inch gaps between the bars in his pet gate, so we have to just shut the door and block his "jail" off completely until he gets a little bigger!
