| Making me late for work.... AHHHHHH.... I am going to loose my job if he makes me late one more day (and I am a Realtor , self employed) Sounds redicuolous but I also work in the office I Realtor out of so I do have an office schedule as well. ANYWAYS>>>> every morning when it is time to put Rusty in his kennel, he hides from me. Most usually I have to "trick" him in order to catch him. I have to take my shoes off, set in the recliner, pick up the remote control (as if i am staying a while) then he will jump up there with me and lay down. This whole process can take 10-15 minutes and of course makes me run late. He won't even come for a treat... I am so frustrated with this as he will not "come". We went to Petsmart training and that is the biggest thing he WOULD NOT do. Not by "come", "Rusty, come here" NOTHING.... not even outside while we go out to potty. Sometimes he will walk down to the mailbox and this worries me becuase he has also gone across the street to the neighbors. We live in an area of 2 acre plots so he has plenty of room to be on MY LAND... Any ideas on how to get him to come??? I am dying here

| Hmm maybe show him his favorite treat? Will he come if he gets treats? Or maybe just wake up 15 minutes earlier if all else fails.. |

He loves treats and loves going through his sit, down, stay, leave it routine to get them but when it comes that time.... he will not even come close enough to me to do that.

| wow what a smart pup I think that if you try setiing a time up before you leave sat 15 min and get down on the floor and play with him. Maybe he just needs some attention. Another thought get him a play buddy to keep him company |

| He gets lots & lots of attention and he also has a play buddy... Sophie She doesnt run from me at that time, course ... she weighs 1.5 and has legs about 2" long so... even if she were running from me I probably wouldnt realize it Anyways.... I am just using the training section to vent it out and maybe just maybe someone will have gone through the same thing and can tell me what might have worked for them Thanks for all of the ideas so far.

It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | Does he just really HATE his kennel and knows that's where he's going when its time for you to leave? Can he stay somewhere else? I don't crate Duke up at all anymore. He hates to see me go and sometimes sits in front of the door but at least I can get him to come to me and give me kisses before leaving. How about a special toy in the kennel that he can play with only when your gone? GOOD luck .

| Well, the biggest thing here is that he is the winner and he probably knows it. If he doesn't "come" then he knows you will sit in the recliner and he gets to jump on there with you. My only thought is to start over with the "come" command. Get a longer rope and put it on his collar (harness), get a special, special treat..maybe try gerber turkey or chicken baby hotdogs..something extra special. When he is on the rope walk away from him and then turn to face him and in a VERY excited Overly Excited voice say "Rusty, come" and start reeling him in (if he doesn't come on his own) then praise praise and give that treat. Do this for while until he does come on his own, then take the rope off and try it in a confined area and see if he will come. You will really have to be consistent and work on it..maybe take a whole weekend and dedicate some training time to this command..maybe at 5-10min intervals throughout the day. Work with different treats until you find the one that trips his trigger. Don't let him have the upper hand on this. You can do it, no reason for you to be late for work! Kathy |

| I have this problem with my 3 yr old Otis. I blame myself because I never worked with him on the lead rope, I just always went out and got him. For his first 2 yrs he would even run away and think I was playing when I went out to get him. He's getting a little better, He'll at least stop when I'm coming out to get him now, but only if the weather is bad will he come when called. I too prop the door open on nice days and let them run in and out. Maybe I"ll try the rope and weiner trick. HOpefully he's not too old of a dog to learn a new trick!!!! He's also a runner, I wonder if he'll always be that way or if that will lessen as he gets older.

| Why don't you just put a leash on him when you take him outside, then you don't have to catch him. Loki knows "crate". If I say "crate" he RUNS to his crate in about 5 seconds (he just did it, I'm not exaggerating) because he gets a TREAT out of it. Sometimes even a kong! Right now he is lying in his crate looking at me, thinking "mom where is my treat" so I have to go give him one now... You have to do it even when you aren't leaving though. Practice putting him in there for 5 minutes, sometimes don't even close the door - just give him a treat for obeying you.

| He doesnt potty well on a leash... almost like I am not giving him enough potty space. I am definately going to take all of the helpful infomation that everyone has given and put it to use.... SURELY ONE of these ideas will be his way of learning. Thanks again to everyone for their input
