I have this problem with my 3 yr old Otis. I blame myself because I never worked with him on the lead rope, I just always went out and got him. For his first 2 yrs he would even run away and think I was playing when I went out to get him. He's getting a little better, He'll at least stop when I'm coming out to get him now, but only if the weather is bad will he come when called. I too prop the door open on nice days and let them run in and out. Maybe I"ll try the rope and weiner trick. HOpefully he's not too old of a dog to learn a new trick!!!! He's also a runner, I wonder if he'll always be that way or if that will lessen as he gets older.
