| Yes...Benji hates the leash too but what I have done is bring treats with me. If he walks to the elevator without sitting then he gets a treat. Everyday I try to make him walk a little bit further and he loves it now. Everytime I open my apartment door he starts running down the hallway with me. Oh...one more tip. He is not a fan of his collar but I make sure I put it on him every morning and don't take it off him until bed time. He tries to eat it off and rubs his head along the floor but he has to learn to like it...it is very important for him to wear so - my point is just to be consistent. I can't wait till spring so we can go for long walks in the park! |

She is what I call a "dinted "baby. She came to me at 9 months after her first home was less then kind. I put two levels of yank and correct make them do it training on her and she collapsed. We went clicker and have done fine till this November when a Pit bull tossed her to the ground. She did not get hurt badly except she lost her mind and went after a guy that got in her face and bite him on the hand. She is doing great now and is getting her old self back. The more stressed she is the more she pulls. Unless she is in her rig that is a halti and harness. But I like to get her just on a harness. I train a ton and I learned a lot but it not the everyday" normal" dog stuff I know. Still got to learn that. I will enjoy the responces to the leash questions. Joy | |

| My tiger is the same way . . . . he does not like his harness being put on so I have to bribe him with a treat. But once he has it, he's okay. |

| I've got the same problem and Brownie is 4 years old already.... She doesn't like the harness either and bribes don't work because she doesn't eat it public (weird dog). So, I end up carrying her everywhere I go, thank god she's only 4 pounds, LOL.

Judy, what kind of harness do you use? I have been trying to find a good one for our 3 lb puppy.

| For treats - I found all natural chicken liver ones at Petsmart the other day. I think that Benji has a food allergy so we always try to find all natural treats with chicken, which is the most neutral type of meat out there. They are a little big for him so I had to cut them in half but, HE LOVES THEM! P.S. I hear they love Cheerios but I would stick to the original ones, they have less sugar. |

| I have never really had a huge issue with any of mine getting accustomed to the leash. I think it does take patience and persistence and getting them used to it little by little until it is second nature. You might try attaching the leash while in the house during normal activities making sure of course that it does not get hooked on anything...must be supervised at all times. Once she is used to it, it is important to teach her not to pull and this can be accomplished by stopping your forward movement until she stops pulling or asking her to sit and rewarding of course whenever she walks nicely without pulling. Good luck and let us know how it is going. |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I don't have much to add that hasn't been said. For us, consistency was the key. We go out for a leashed walk every day. It's something he looks forward to because it's a break from the house routine.

| Mai Tai was exactly like that at 3 months. She would just sit and refuse to budge. If I tried to coax her into moving she would plant her butt more firmly and use her strength to prevent the leash from moving her. She would also take hold of the leash and growl and bite at it. For some strange reason... my friend who has a 11 year old Doxie/Black Lab mix and a 6 year old Shi Tzu/Maltese mix walked my dog when she turned 4 months old. I don't know how or why but she walked like a pro on the leash the moment my friend walked her! Ever since my friend walked her I have absolutely no problems with Mai Tai. She fights with me when I put the harness on but when she realizes we are going outside for a walk she gets so excited and is on her best behavior. I don't know how to explain it but it is a joy walking her now- I try to do it everyday. I was thinking at 3 months, she didn't get all her shots yet so I avoided taking her outside and therefore put the leash on her indoors. At 4 months she was fully vaccinated and I freely took her outside. I'm thinking if you are trying to leash train your puppy indoors that may be why it's so difficult? Maybe if you take your puppy outside they will forget about the leash and get excited about exploring the outdoors with you? Just a thought! |

| Another idea I forgot about but learned from an episode of the Dog Whisperer, which I thought was a great idea, is to take the dog away from someone or something it really wants and walk it on a leash toward the object. For example, you could stand on the sidewalk and a friend could carry your dog a little ways up the street and then put her down and let her walk back to you while you call her. If she likes to be at the house, you could carry her away from the house and have her walk back to it. If there is a dog she likes to play with or a favorite toy, you could place the toy farther away and have her walk on the leash to get the toy or greet and play with the other dog. Hope this helps!! |
