| I live on my own, so I was afraid of not being able to be a good mom since I work full time. But I'm a dog person and allergic to cats anyway - so I did a lot of research be sure I'd make a good decision. I also had always had larger dogs growing up (like Norweigan Elkound and Scotties) so I wasn't sure I even liked tiny dogs! But let me tell you - when I picked Bailey up from his breeder - LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT!!! And I committed myself to seriously adding playtime into my busy schedule. We play at least a solid 1/2 hour before I leave and when I return from work. I try to wear him out before I go, we take a walk in the nieghborhood and he loves fetch throughout my home! And I try to focus on him when I come home for that 1/2hr. before I get involved in dinner or phone calls or whatever. They're like children with lots of energy and they need lots of love and affection - and a playmate! So of course when I'm home, he follows me everywhere and I play with him constantly! I also try to take him with me anytime I can. I started driving with him immediately, so he doesn't stress when we go places. He loves to go to PetsMart, the gas station and especially "Grandma's House"!!! I try to take him to my parents' house a couple times a week so he gets to explore their house, get extra love from my parents and younger siblings and play with their dogs. He loves it! It's a big commitment, but the joy you get from having a Yorkie - honestly it sounds hokey, but it's indescribable!!! So I highly recommend it if you can create a rythm that will work for you and your new baby! Sorry I'm so "wordy" - but that's my 2 cents for ya! ~Kelley |

| training Thank you so much for your advice. I have been making myself nuts with this potty thing. it is amazing that I had NO trouble training any other breed of dog. This yorkie has made me nervous and my mind think different because of her size and all of the potential health situations that could occur (hyper..something, etc). I have done everything from blocking off kitchen , to pen with crate in it, to pen with ony pad and bed in it to now finally doing what I have done for all my previous pups.....the crate. I am just hoping that since her intake is less that that means she can stillhold it like the others did (do). I have decided to take your advice and come home from work after a certain amount of time and let her out (either outside or on pad). Put her back into the crate and back to work. I do believe that the pen will only make training take longer. If an accident happens on the floor of the pen then how can you correct them. I am hoping that she will NOT want to be soiled and so she will keep area clean and then continue to go on command. I read all of the information from the site you suggested. Thank you. I took down my pen and have decided that that should be used AFTER I know that she is trained. Yes, she goes on the pad whenever we travel but she still will go the occasional time off of it. I think that she knows touse the pad vut she doesn't know that the rest of the floor is NOT good. What time do (did) you feed your little one? Do you remember you time schedules that you did at first? Thanks again. I think I better go to sleep since this is going to be a long night. I am sue that seh will be up by 2 and I will have to be a wake trying to get her to go on command. lol thanks again. Kathy Quote:

| What do you do if she whines alot? I have tried sticking our dog in a downstairs bathroom with a baby gate and she just cries and barks. Then I noticed she will get worked up and go potty all over the room. We just got the dog a few days ago but I am trying to figure out what we are going to do when we go back to work on Wednesday. I don't want to leave her in a room where she will cry the whole time. Any advice would be great. |

| I got Gabby when she was 9 weeks old. At first we put her in our 4' X 4' hot tub with a puppy pad. I left a radio on and gave her a blanket and chew toys. Most of the time she'd poop in the tub, not always on the pad. after two weeks she could jump out of it and tore up the carpet in front of the door. After that we put her in a wire cage with a plastic bottom. it's about 3-4' long and 2' high. she'd always rip her pad to shreds and poop and/or pee right in the cage. and she absolutely hates that cage. She's very meek in the mornings because she knows she will be going in it. She actually shakes when i pick her up and carry her to the cage. She stays in it from 7:45 until 11:00 when my husband comes home for lunch. he lets her out for about a half hour and then she goes back in it until 4:00. I started her training on the puppy pad. she was only 2.3 lbs and it was so cold and snowy here in Minnesota. so she will go on it, but I don't want her to only go on the pad. i want her to go outside when she has to relieve herself. I'm having a heck of a time getting her trained. many times she'll pee right next to the pad. same with poopin., although she'll poop anywhere in the house. i just let her outside and she peed for a really long time and then came in, took a little drink and went and peed right next to the pad. I'm wishing now I hadn't started her on the pads and just went right with the outdoors. anybody got any advice? shouldn't she be trained by now? |

| Holding it at night I feel pretty lucky regarding my Lucy at night time. She goes to "her room" around 9:30 or 10 when we go to bed. Her crate is in my bedroom during the night so she doens't get scared. At first, she whimpered, but I'd just "Shhh" her and she'd stop. I don't hear another peep out of her until 4 a.m. when my husband gets up for work. I get up, taker her out to pee and put her back in her crate and go back to bed until 7:30 or so. The 7:30 pee time is a big one with some poop involved. She doesn't seem to eat much of her own food at 4 but she'll snoop around the lab's food bowl in the garage. I guess it tastes better?? Lucy isn't too good during the daytime. She always seems to sneak away and find a pooping spot. I swear, if I turn my head away for a second..she's somewhere pooping! We still love her. |

| well, Gabby will be six months old on Tues. I'm knocking on wood as I write this, but she's gotten alot better. The biggest thing, I think, is that I'm home now at 11:00 AM. and I've been taking her to work with me. So I can let her out every hour or so. That's probably the biggest thing. It's been a week since she's had any mistakes in the house. I think I read somewhere where it has to be a month before you can say they are trained. I just dread going back to school this fall, because she'll have to go back in the cage for the whole day again. but for now, we'll just enjoy this. Oh, and I had written that all of a sudden she started eating her poop. Well, just as suddenly, she's quit that. Thank heaven. |

| Pepper stays in his xpen while I am gone. He has his crate, food, water, toys and potty pad. He is doing really well on the potty training. And I feel better knowing he is in a safe place when I am not home.

| he doesn't mind being in there all day? how many hours is he in there? Gabby hates hers so much that she would go and hide under our end table. it's got a ledge that's about 4 inches off the ground and it's very hard to get her out. Plus she doesn't come when you call her. When I do finally pull her out from under the table, she shakes so bad, sometimes gets the hiccups. I feel so bad for her. I'm hoping that by the time school starts, maybe she'll be able to just stay in the house. If she was totally potty trained, then she could, but who knows. If I can just get her potty trained then I can start working on obedience training. She needs lots of it!! Love her anyway!! |

| I just got my yorkie 1 week ago and he is NOT potty trained. My husband and I are military and I am not home from 7:30am-6pm. My husband gets home around 5pm. Our kitchen it going to be closed off by a dog gate and a door...is this too much room for him to roam around? We are trying to train him to a pee pee pad, but he's somewhat stubborn. He likes to go off, but in the middle of his potty, I will try to put him back on the pad. He doens't really get it, yet...but I'm hoping he will. Does anyone have any better ideas? I just can't imagine having him in a crate, because my husband doesn't always make it home for lunch to take him out. I just can't imagine doing that to him. I need some SUPER awesome ideas for training or opinions if I'm doing the right thing. Thank you! |

| Good tips from all Wow! I just got a yorkie pup 5 days ago and these are all such helpful tips! I must say that potty training has becoming a bit daunting for my husband and me... we we will start leaving our pup at home while we're at work, but so far my husband has been able to stay at home this week with Wall-E. The only thing is that when I put Wall-E on the puppy pad, he won't go... and then I'll make him stay on the pad for 5-10 minutes (he tries to squirm away from it though)- he'll just sit there, and then the moment I let him go, he'll pee on the floor or carpet! Any advice? I want to get this whole puppy pad thing in his head, but he doesn't seem to get it! |

| slemp33...boy, I know how you're feeling...My husband won't let me gate my yorkie in the kitchen. He's afraid she'll chew the cabinets or other things. I think putting your dog in the kitchen is a very good idea. Mine HATES her crate so much. and we're gone all day, too. My dog picked up going on the puppy pad right away, so I don't know what to tell you other than to keep putting him on it and praising him and giving him a treat when he does finally go. I know there's a spray you can put on the pad that's supposed to help them learn to go on there. My problem is I want her to learn to go outside and only use the pad if we're not home for any amount of time. Mine's getting much better though. I've even been leaving her in the house for about an hour once a day and she's been just fine. Of course in Sept, when I go back to school, then it will be a different story. Back to being gone ALL day. I dread that. |

| I have a two year old Yorkie and now a 16 week old silky cocker (I thought she was a silky terrier mixed with a cocker but the internet says maltese mixed with cocker - thoughts?). Buehrle, my two year old, learned to go on a pee pad quickly. I work long days (10 hours plus) and would keep him in my bathroom. He was also a jumper, so I closed the door to ensure he stayed in there. He would go on the pee pad, which I kept in the shower, and then play/sleep in the rest of the bathroom. Once he was more trained, I let him run around the house during the day. He still doesn't quite understand how to let me know he needs to poo and usually does that inside, but that is only twice a day so I am not too upset by that. My youngest, Alexei, is another story. I got her 10 days ago and she is a potty training nightmare. She will wake me up really early in the morning and whine in her crate to go outside. When we go out, she will potty. However, the rest of the day she will go outside but then pee as soon as we get inside. The worst part is that I leave her in the bathroom when I am at work. When I come home, she has gone pee on the pad but pooped on the floor. Then she ran through the poo and got it all over the floor, walls, and herself. I understand that she needs to go, but how can I make her leave it alone and not walk through it? One other thing: my oldest has started to have accidents in the house since I got the puppy. How can I remind him not to do this even though he sees her doing it? |

OMG!!!! We must have the same dog. I used to leave my little one in the bathroom too and poop was everywhere. On her, the wall, the floors. I was giving her a bath almost everyday! I think the bathroom was to small....it is just a powder room. Now I leave her in my bedroom which has a bathroom. I leave a potty pad in there but she misses it. At least now she's not stepping in it. She does poop in the same place. | |

| Question questions questions I too work full time and my baby yorkie is coming March 20. So I'm trying to papare myself as much as possible. I read that since yorkies are so small and some have a hard time eating I was told that you should leave food and water out for them even if you're gone for the day. . . But if I'm trying to potty train her and shes constantly eating and drinking wouldn't she poo and pee everywhere? Okay so here is MY PLAN when I get her ..... She will be in a play pen is ... Pink Plaid Pet Tent Exercise Pen Playpen Dog Cat Crate - eBay (item 260350937672 end time Jan-25-09 08:56:22 PST) Each panel is 17" wide and 21" high 41" Diameter after it set up I was going to put her crate, pee pads in a litter box in one area so she knows to pee and poo there and of course cover it with plastic until she is fully potty trained. Is that going to be too big for her? Should I block a part off of the play pen? I need help! Tips....advice anybody? |
